A really nice bike ride of 43 km from San Candido to Lienz all almost downhill, so for everyone. For cyclists x case warning that at the end of the race you will have a little 'bad on the B side, but still you will have spent a nice day in the middle of nature.

We sniffed out four mountain bikes in San Candido with the aim of covering the entire cycle route to Lienz (just over 40km).
The experience was very pleasant, being almost all downhill (very few difficult climbs).
You can appreciate the surrounding nature and flank the river.
There are several places where you can stop to rest, eat something or simply fill your water bottles.
Along the way you can visit Sillian and the Loacker factory in Heinfels.
Highly recommended!

We did the bike ride from Heinfels to Lienz and it was very fun and relaxing because it was downhill and in the middle of greenery. Sore note: the Lienz station. Endless queue to make the return ticket with two totally inadequate people at the ticket office. One thought it best to close the door to eat at 11.30 and the other was slow and charged us an extra train ticket...

Only one way route starting from San Candido.
Absolutely family friendly experience: many places to stop (only a few equipped as bars / restaurants), well-paved bike path, negative slope for the whole stretch (descent) less than a few points (3/4 perhaps), spacious enough to contain the two directions of travel and with a fantastic landscape.
Note that part of the route is in the Sun, which in the summer months is still felt.
Possibility to rent bikes directly in San Candido without booking and with relatively fast bike delivery.
The return should be made directly to Lienz because the surcharge of the bike by train is about the same as that required by the rental company, with the difference that you will not have to think about it anymore.
Negative notes:
- price: rental + return by train cost about 40€, but both the bike that is a normal city bike and especially the train are not worth that kind of price, but it is worth the experience.
- crowding: many people and unaccustomed to cycling.

We rent bikes in San Candido, from Papin Sport, opting for assisted pedaling but sincerely the route is also feasible with the normal citybike (at least the outward that is flat and sometimes downhill). It may have been the period of overcrowding but I was not thrilled. Too many people to look after that don't come at you. I would have preferred a lighter track. The Loacker we could not visit because the crowd was really impressive. Few rest areas and attractions for children. Another sore note, the costs. 50 euros the bike with pedal assistance, 7 euros the deposit if you leave the bike in Lienz (almost everyone does) and 10 euros the train back to San Candido (children also pay but they do not necessarily find seats, we had to hold ours). In short, not the best for a relaxing walk

The very feasible route, on the way out is mainly flat and downhill... a few climbs.
We started from Dobbiaco, not San Candido, it's 50km...
We made some stops on the way: breakfast break, Loaker factory and a river... in total it took us 4 hours... passed very quickly I must say...
On the way back we did it by train from Lienz to San Candido (1:15h) if you can the tickets do them first on the internet, because at the ticket office of the station in two people we paid 35€.
From San Candido to Dobbiaco we returned by bike (20 minutes with some climbs) to bring back the bikes

Cute but updated train schedules, it is not possible that every time I go there are written timetables on the site and then there are no trains for bicycles and you have to wait hours... really embarrassing

On the strength of the positive reviews, we decide to cycle from San Candido to Lienz, nothing more nothing less than any bike path, let's not be misunderstood, the cycle path of the Val di Fassa / Fiemme is definitely better with many more attractions for children, since we were with the 5-year-old. Well we expected better.

We left San Candido leaving the car in one of the various parking lots and renting bicycles. Among the rental options there is also those of electric bikes although the route is almost all downhill and is affordable for everyone. Panoramic path in the first part, passage almost a must to the Loacler, then the cycle path continues along the river. Upon arrival in Lienz you are practically already at the station and there are trains on which to load the bike or you leave it in the store of the renter.
