We had a walk up this mountain as a family (49, 46, 14 & 11 Yr old) with reasonable fitness levels. We had already walked Ben Nevis & Snowdon over the last few years and I'd say this is the most challenging of the three. We started from the NT campsite at Wasdale head ascending via Lingmell Gill and descending via the corridor near Great Gable. It's a fairly constant steep uphill slog with a bit of scrambling as you get nearer the summit, then a bit of a rock field on the route we took. We were rewarded with some magnificent views on the ascent and summit as it was a very clear day. Be prepared with good clothing, snacks and drinks, although there are opportunities for refilling with water from various streams etc.

Review is based on my own fitness level as everyone will find climbing any mountain different. We are 29 and 30 years old, in pretty decent shape and have hiked a fair bit. We took the route from Wasdale which was pretty straight forward and free car parking with toilets (portacabins). Expecting it to be busier, but after the first 45mins it was pretty spacious, it was a bit of a slog in 25 degree heat.
Agree with many, it is harder going than the Llanberis Path up Snowdon as it is virtually uphill the whole route but well worth it for the views throughout. Took us about 3.5hours all in. As I say, it isn't an easy stroll but achievable for all in my opinion.

Climbed Scafell Pike yesterday in perfect weather conditions. A tough climb (I'm in my 70's). Compared to this, Snowdon is a walk in the park. A good paper map is essential, don't rely on iphone GPS because signal is intermittent. We left from Seathwaite carpark at 1000h and arrived at the summit at 1500h, a long walk via Sprinkling Tarn and Great End but worth it for the views. The last part over a scree hill, into the valley and up the final cliff was the hardest but it actually looks harder than it is. Dogs and children were doing it.
Because we were running out of time, we returned via Wasdale route (2h) and cadged a lift back to Seathwaite carpark.
Only 4 stars because there should be a compass at the top pointing out all the landmarks that can be seen around. To have nothing there providing info is a bit poor NT.

A must-do hike! We picked a scorching hot day to do it and are glad we did, as can imagine it would be very slippy in poor weather especially on the way down as there’s lots of smooth stones. There are red flags marking the route in case the weather is bad, as under cloud cover/fog you could easily find yourself walking too close to the cliff edge without realising. The views throughout the whole climb are stunning. We were up and down in about 5 hours via the Wasdale Pike route (and the non-scrambling route to the top) starting from the Wasdale National Trust carpark and with lots of breaks. Make sure you come prepared with lots of water/food, sunscreen and all weather clothes as conditions can change quickly. We’re all averagely fit and still found it a challenging walk - but very worth it!

If you're a keen climber or hiker, Scafell Pike is a must-do. It can be quite a challenge, so it's important that you know what you're doing before climbing the mountain.

I hiked Scafell pike on 09/04/2022. I used the Wasdale Campsite as start point. It is very steep all the way up. Here was some ice at the & very windy & cold as well that I stayed at summit for less than 2 minutes as I rushed to lower levels where it was sheltered from the wind. It was hard, rocky but worthwhile.

We walked this on a sunny Sunday morning from Wasdale which is the shortest route but by no means easy. It took me 2 hrs 15 mins to complete and another 1 hr 45 mins to get back down. I am a reasonably fit man in his early 50s. Wear appropriate footing and clothing layering as it can be very sunny but at the top of the mountain, it can get very cold, take water and snacks as well.
The terrain is very unstable in parts so always be sure of your footing as the paths are made of stone and gravel rather than a traditional footpath. The route is a fair pull from start to finish so although less than 3 miles it is a very tough walk not to be taken lightly, especially in less than perfect weather conditions. But perfectly doable with some thought and planning and as one experienced walker told me it's a marathon, not a sprint so pace yourself

Brilliant walk, little bit of scrambling as we chose a slightly more challenging route, luckily the mist corseted at the top enough for some excellent views. Definitely not something to attempt without good shoes or in poor visibility.

Very tough climb on well maintained paths. Very busy with lots of people of different ages and sizes trting to tick off the highest mountain in England. Takes approximately 3 hours to climb if average fitness and taking it steady. When we climbed the views where non existent as misty and very cold but have seen pictures when clear and its amazing. Hardest physical thing ive ever done.

I am trying to gauge how challenging Scafell Pike is compared to other hikes I have done, but I realize conditions are different in different places. I have hiked a bit in the Canadian Rockies: Fairview Mountain (9.2km, 1011m elevation gain), Sentinel Pass (10.9km, 792m gain), Iceline Trail in Yoho (14.2km, 864m) are a few examples with similar distance/elevation to Scafell Pike. I also hiked Ben Vrackie in Scotland a couple years ago (9.2km, 644m). I am comfortable with mild-moderate scrambling, scree and boulder fields, but prefer to avoid highly technical scrambling/climbing. Does anyone with experience think Scafell Pike would pose a greater challenge than what I am used to? I am aware the climate and weather is considerably different in the UK compared to Canada, so any tips would be greatly appreciated. Thanks so much!

It is not very difficult. Haven’t done any of the hikes you did but it is up to 2 hours walk each way and no technical climbing is involved.

Is it achievable with a dog and children aged 9 & 15??

If you are able to think that they could physically then look at the route up. Wasdale route is quite steep but the shortest. Whichever way up it can be a bit disorientating with the climate / clouds. We saw a couple of children similar ages, but know that a dog had to be rescued. Hope this helps.

Hi. I climbed Ben Nevis in my 60s. Snowdon in my 70s. Iam 86 now and wish wish climb Scarfel Pike. I am in relatively good condition. Do you consider this a little too ambitious?

Snowdon and Ben Nevis are both fairly easy climbs and their main ascent routes are all-weather. Scafell is the lowest of the three in terms of elevation but maybe the most difficult. The main reason being that routes to the summit do not follow well defined paths all the way and cross boulder fields which can be difficult. Terribly easy to fall and break a leg. I would advise you against attempting it. But if you are determined to give it a go then check the weather forecast and only make your attempt under mild, dry and clear conditions. Good luck.

Hi, I am looking to do a walking challenge with my fitness group and wanted guidance about the best route to take with limited scrabbling involved. Any guidance on routes and accommodation for 15 people much appreciated.

Hi. You may have already completed your walk, if so apologies for my late response. Despite suggestions that the Pike is a "Moderate" walk, I suggest otherwise. I do a lot of walking, both hill walking and on the flat. The Pike IS NOT for those who get out of breath on the flat or going up "moderate" hills. Scarfell is all up! It took me 2 1/2 hrs up and 1 1/2 hrs down, not as quick as some but by no means slow. I have never seen so many people give up and go back down exhausted.

I’ve climbed to the summit of Scafell Pike many times before and on different routes along with many other mountains in the UK. The question I want to ask is a different type of question than usual about Scafell Pike and I've tried googling and I can’t find the answer. The question is; Why are there two mountains in the Cumbria Lake District with the name Scafell as part or the whole name? The two mountains of course are Scafell Pike and Scafell. And how did that come about and why did this happen with the two highest mountains in the Lake District and the whole of England. It’s not the usual question about climbing Scafell Pike as you can see. Has anyone got the answer or possibly a historian about the names of the mountains in the Lake District, such as these two hopefully might have the answer, as I’ve tried finding out this information in all ways on the Internet including googling, but have sadly failed to find any information about this. Hope someone can help.

ps : I believe nineteenth century OS maps referred to the two peaks as Sca Fell Higher Top and Sca Fell Lower Top. The point being that they were so close together that they were considered parts of the same mountain.

Apologies for delayed response, I suspect you now know the answer to your own question. For the benefit of other's; if you intend carrying anything other than your rucksack up Scafell from Wasdale be prepared to experience pain. Can you do it? If fit enough, yes. As I've relayed to other's since, I've never seen so many people give up on the climb and go back down. I even witnessed a couple of young ladies being physically sick through exertion. This mountain deserves respect.
