A hidden gem that needs a lot of care. The entry is magnificent with 2 very tall statues. The hall looks unbelievable with more statues and great carved doors. The concierge needs improvement in English and how to help visitors. We desperately needed a guide to explain the paintings on the ground floor. The artwork was from the 16th century. A few had English writing but most did not. The next 2 floors were even better but this place needs much repair and maintenance. Please don’t let it fall,apart.
The grounds are equally impressive but need TLC.
Anyone wanting culture must visit. Highly recommended.

Segnalato sulla lonely planet come una destinazione che “vale il viaggio”, abbiamo deciso di visitare questo museo.
prezzo d’ingresso 75.000 rupie a persona ovvero circa 5€ (non poco per gli standard locali).
Luogo fatiscente, sporco, buio, pochissime didascalie in inglese, opere mal tenute.
Ma soprattutto doveva esserci un secondo padiglione dedicato all’arte contemporanea del Maestro che abbiamo scoperto invece solo a fine visita essere chiuso. E lo abbiamo scoperto solo dopo nostra insistenza per vedere le opere del Maestro Nyoman Gunarsa.

Nama museu ini sesuai dengan Peilik museum tersubut (alm) Bapak Nyoman Gunarsa, salah satu pelukis terkenal dari Klungkung. lokasi dari museum ini terletak di Desa Banda Banjarangkan Klungkung.

Het museum Nyoman Gunarsa brengt u in een een magistraal gebouw in contact met een uitzonderlijke collectie van vroeg traditionele Balinese schilderkunst. Dank zij de bekwame uitleg van de gids begrepen wij de schilderwerken en tevens hun gebruik in de traditionele Balinese maatschappij . Op de eerste en tweede verdieping worden andere Balinese schilderwerken, beeldhouwwerken en wayangpoppen tentoongesteld die de grote rijkdom van Bali in de kunst weergeven. Het is een grote verdienste van Nyoman Gunarsa om deze uitzonderlijke verzameling in zijn museum voor het publiek open te stellen.

Il museo più triste mai visto. Collezioni vaste, antiche e preziose, ma conservate in modo assolutamente indegno. Fa tristezza, ma anche rabbia. Arazzi ammuffiti e ingialliti, dipinti buttati qua e là, mobile di legno aggredite dai tarli. Uccelli che entrano dalle finestre, ragnatele e polvere (vecchie di anni) ovunque. Didascalie inesistenti o ridicole, sale chiuse e da visitare al buio (!!!), con un custode sprovveduto che finge di essere esperto di non si sa che. Qui la conservazione dei beni culturali è un miraggio, e fa male al cuore capire che tra pochi anni tutto questo sarà perso per incuria. I bagni sono qualcosa di inimmaginabile, covo di insetti, zanzare e batteri, non vengono puliti da anni. La cosa peggiore è che il proprietario è a sua volta un pittore, ed è veramente incomprensibile che consenta una tale situazione (i suoi dipinti, però, sono guardacaso nell'ala più nuova e meglio tenuta del museo). Tutto questo a caro prezzo, per di più.
Eravamo gli unici visitatori, e non è difficile spiegare il perché. Che amarezza!

Superbe musée hélas peu visité ne le ratez pas si vous allez d'Ubud à Klunkung, il se situe à gauche à une carrefour. Il y a deux bâtiments et un guide attentionné et compétent. Le premier présente de superbe peinture traditionnelle de la région depuis plusieurs siècles qui déroulent des histoires typiquement balinaises ou des épisodes du Ramayana et du Maharabarata adaptées à la sauce balinaise. Surtout prenez le temps d'en détailler trois ou quatre. Il y a quelques très bons commentaires en anglais par des experts de divers pays et le guide sait les expliciter. Ces rouleaux sont présentés sous un film plastique un peu poussiéreux mais on voit bien quand même. Si vous voulez voir les peintres qui poursuivent cette tradition allez les visiter dans le village voisin de Kamasan.... L'autre bâtiment présentent des oeuvres contemporaines du Maître (qui hélas vient de mourir) et de ses collègues. Ce peintre a un talent exceptionnel pour rendre le mouvement (des danses en particulier) et de l'expression (regardez les yeux des personnages. Il est passionné par la musique. Les autres peintures sont d'un intérêt variable mais certaines sont fort intéressantes et illustrent la diversité de l'inspiration des artistes balinais.

Nyoman Gunarsa is one of my favorite Indonesian artists. I love the fact that the museum is on his property. I love the fact that you don't need to go thru a metal detector to enter the museum. I love the fact that there were birds flying around the museum and that you didn't have security telling you you were standing too close to a painting. On the contrary, one of the cleaning staff was sweeping the dust off a painting! I loved that I could wander around on the property and stumble onto one of his studio areas where Mr. Gunarsa painted. One of my all time favorite museum visits, anytime, anywhere.

I have visited all major museums in Bali. This one impressed me the most. The collector is also a famous Indonesian artist. He used all his money to collect those pieces. many paintingsare only protected by plastic. There is no air con. I just worry how those paintings can survive the heat and humid air. The collections are world class. By looking at those same art objects, you can appreciate more of Balinese art. A must for any art lover.

This museums apparently houses an exceptional collection of ancient Bali paintings and craftsmanship but , as somebody has already said on this site , the building is not equipped properly and the display conditions are very poor , I was nevertheless very glad to see this museum which has very few visitors and is out of the tourist track , I recommend a visit for the lovers of old Bali art - you need a car , taxi or driver to get there

This museum contains hundreds of exceptionally fine examples of classical Balinese art, some going back centuries. Unfortunately, they are in a building that is not air conditioned and is poorly lit. I have little doubt that it would take millions of dollars to conserve and rehouse these works in a museum that befits their importance. The museum staff are helpful and welcoming, which makes the state of this museum all the more sad. Visitors to the museum are, it seems, few and far between.
I recommend anyone who has an interest in classical Balinese paintings to see the many fine works in this museum before the ravages of time do any more damage to these wonderful examples of this genre of Balinese art and culture.
