WHEN five years goes by and you book the same guide again you wonder if standards will have changed and they had. They got even better!
Paul Collins was a fount of all knowledge when I used Best Tuk Tuk Tours in 2012 during a visit to Thailand with a friend for a fantastic holiday due in no small part to BTTT.
So I had no hesitation in rebooking with Paul when I went back to Thailand and Chang Mai a few weeks ago.
Maybe the hairstyle is a bit more severe now but Paul was in fine form as his famous tuk tuk pulled up outside my guesthouse.....at 6.30am!!
Within seconds we were roaring off through streets just waking up, heading for a market to buy our traditional Thai breakfast as well as food to give to local monks as alms.
A short while later we were parked up within striking distance of Doi Suthep by the side of an aboretum whose pavement had trickles of monks going off to collect alms.
Paul spotted one coming up and showed me how to give alms and what correct attitude to adopt for prayer to receive the blessing the monk would bestow on me in return.
He gave his alms and then it was my turn, handing over the food we had bought to another young monk before I respecfully squiatted with my hands together to receive my blessing. You don's start too many days like that.
Then we were off to see Doi Suthep itself, the famous golden mountain temple shimmering in the morning sunshine which slowly burnt off clouds drifting up through nearby forest and jungle.
By now it was breakfast time and Paul's shrewd buys earlier in the market were laid out on our table with views of the city below. But what had we got? All I could see was four packages wrapped in banana leaf and secured with a bamboo pin.
I didn't have to worry. It was four different colours of sticky rice which proved delicious, the whole lot being washed down with fresh hot coffee in surroundings which changed from blue skies to Gothic overcast as the clouds occsionally streamed through the temple blotting out light.
One of the things I like most about Paul's BTTT is the freedom. He just took me where I frequently didn'ty see other tourists, where fascinating local life could be experienced in friendly surroundings and where you got a real taste for community, life, work and play.
For instance, our next port of call was a battered roadside stall out towards the airport where we bought staples for our picnic lunch by the Ping River. I never knew the place existed and I doubt many visitors did either, but the stall and its smoking roadside barbecue is famous as probably the best place in the city to buy the famous Chiang Mai sausage. We snapped up a couple of portions as well as some barbecued prok and that was us done.
After our picnic sat on concrete benches in a park by the Ping we set off for the Queen Sirikit Botanic Garden which was a true joy to stroll round with its new rainforest canopy walk, fountains, water lilies, arid plants, carnivorous plants and any number of other displays and colourful flower beds.
Not content with showing me round this wonderful attraction, Paul set up final visits for the day, first to the fascinating Siam Insect Museum and then to the Art in Paradise 3D Musuem back in Chiang Mai where you could insert yourself into the art and be pictured doing anything from falling down a chasm to being vattacked by a crocdile. It was an amazing end to the day.
We must have been out more than eleven hours, I never had a dull moment and I saw places I could never have known about or found by myself.
My second day out with Paul began in early afternoon with a visit to the Silver Temple with its silver-coloured temple sheath of metal before we went on to tour the hidden delights of the McKaen former leper hospital, now a centre for rehabilitation of disabled people and home to those elderly who are poor or who don't have family willing to look after them. It was a historic window on the past and a glimpse of the future.
We then moved on to tour the Ancient City and various temple sites, went back down to the river to ceremonially release frogs and fish in a buddhist ceremony in memory of my father who had died the week before and rounded the day off with an atmospheric boat ride up river to herb gardens which we returned from in pitch darkness keeping a weather eye out for other river craft.
Over the two days of tours Paul gave me some memorable moments and some personal memories I will treasure for ever, all with his great sense of humour, fantastic local knowledge of Thai history and places, everything smoothed by the fact he is a certified Tourism Authority of Thailand guide who speaks fluent Thai.
You just can's go wrong with Best Tuk Tuk Tours and when next I come back to Chiang Mai I will be booking Paul and his tuk tuk again for more wonderful trips round the area. Don't miss a chance to book BTTT yourself. It is a class above other operators.

Our time with Paul in Chiang Mai made our trip to Thailand! Paul was an excellent tour guide with incredible knowledge of everything Thai. We did the merit making tour on our first tour with Paul and loved every minute of the day with him. His ability to speak english with us and Thai made our time more enjoyable. We enjoyed our first tour with him so much we asked to have another day with him and asked him to customize the day for us. We couldn't have been more thrilled with all the amazing places he took us. We were even fortunate enough to have our first Thai massage experiences with him. Can't recommend Paul and Best Tuk Tuk Tours enough, you will not be disappointed. Remember, there may be less expensive tours however, you get what you pay for. Worth every penny!!

In Chang Mai for a few days with husband and teenage son. Were able to book Paul the day before and customize what we wanted to do. Merit Making with monks was high on our list to do and Paul was able to walk us through it. Visited Doi Saket and Measa Elephant Camp. The highlights of the day were when Paul took us to the morning market (non-tourist area), bought sticky rice for breakfast and later had a basic lunch with locals. Toured around in a Tuk, Tuk. If you are looking for a luxury tour - this is not what you are looking for.... but if you are looking to do some unique things you wouldn't be able to do on your own... then this is it. This was one of my teenage son's favorite days of the 2 week vacation. We liked Paul's quirkiness - he was knowledgeable, authentic and not over the top like some tour guides. As for the price.... it wasn't the cheapest or the most expensive....why worry about a thousand baht or 2.... you don't go on a vacation to save money :)

I recently had a tour with Paul that was slightly customized and included Doi Suthep, alms offerings to the monks, Wat Pha Lat temple, Wat Umong, a fresh market by the Ping river, Silver temple and some off the beaten path temple ruins.

The positives:

- Since Paul was born and raised in Chiang Mai, he is a good source of information about all things related to the city, temples and the culture.

- The tour never felt rushed and Paul let me roam around leisurely in order to capture great photographs.

- The cost of the tour covered all expenses including breakfast, lunch and entrance fees which was convenient.

Negatives:

- The cost of this tour was very expensive (5700 baht) so my expectations were very high. I think similar tours can be found for half the price if you search around. For example, the day before this tour I met a Thai driver who drove me around to eight temples over a three hour time span for 200 baht (and I tipped him an additional 100 baht). The driver spoke English but didn't guide me around the temples but his price was ridiculously cheap so Paul's tour price left me with very high expectations.

- Paul is a nice guy but he is introverted and at times he seemed aloof, lethargic and uninterested. Perhaps it was the cold he was contending with but I'm not sure. For the price I was paying, I expected more energy and excitement. If I hadn't asked questions the entire tour, there would have been a lot of awkward silence.

- We were taken to a very basic restaurant for lunch and although the food was decent I expected a higher end place for the money that was paid.

In conclusion, I have mixed emotions about this tour. If the tour was half the price, I probably would have given it a higher rating even with Paul's personality. But after paying 5700 baht, I feel slightly disappointed.

Excellent tour guide, very knowledgable and speaks both English and Thai.

We personally wanted someone who knew the history of Chang Mai and the temples, we specifically needed someone who could translate thai knowledge to English.

Fun Day and great lunch!!

Just recently in Chiang Mai and used Paul Collins' services for two days of tours. It was a wonderful experience. Paul is funny, insightful and very engaging. His knowledge of the local culture comes from being an American raised in Thailand. Riding in a Tuk Tuk gives you a unique perspective of the area. He took us to lunch spots we never would have known about or tried. All in all it was a fantastic experience for my wife and I and we recommend Paul's services unreservedly. We learned a lot and had a ton of fun. Please give it a try.

Paul charged my wife and I THB 4,000 for a tour that is worth around THB 2,500 tops in order to make some of the money back that he lost on a last minute cancellation. There are no prices on his website which add to the dodgy experience.

He has family and friends, along with his roommate, write positive reviews for him on his Facebook page in order to cover the negative ones. He also bizarrely replies as "The team" when he writes back in the third person even though the business is a sole proprietorship.

It was my fault for not doing my due diligence and I should have known the price was exorbitant. As PT Barnum famously quipped, "there's a sucker born every minute!" Hopefully Paul will be more honest with future customers.

The tour itself was an afternoon tour of places Anthony Bourdain ate and a few temples. A full, 8 hour day tour costs THB 5,200 with Paul yet he got away with swindling us for THB 4,000 for a less than 4 hour tour. There are many other tours of Chiang Mai and in Thailand in general that will give you much better value.

As for the tour service itself Paul said he was under the weather with ear trouble and it showed. He gave a lethargic tour and did not have any anecdotes about the places Anthony Bourdain ate in but did have some good insights into the temples. The tour itself would have been fine for a few thousand baht cheaper.

I would not recommend this tour at all. Paul should learn a lesson from this and be more ethical in future. You should not try to recoup lost earnings by gouging people who came to him in good faith. Even after the blatant over-charging was pointed out and proven to Paul he did not offer any refund. It is low season so he even said it was difficult financially but gouging people is not the answer.

Take your business elsewhere. Caveat emptor, let the buyer beware.

I personally wouldn't use this company. I read the reviews and thought they sounded great so I emailed. I was in the process of negotiating an itinerary with Paul, who often takes a day or two to reply, when he informed me that someone else had booked our date. He had never told me that this was a possibility and I now have to start again by finding another company and discussing the itinerary all over again. I would prefer someone who was honest from the start and a bit quicker to respond to questions, had he answered the questions quicker I would have booked before this happened. What a let down Best Tours!

Our family of 8 had a great day with Paul Collins. It was a treat having a guide who is fluent in English, and knows his stuff. Before the trip he was good on following up and creating a tour that worked for our family. He is a certified guide and knew all the history of the area. He understood our American tastes
and didn't give us more info then we wanted yet he understood our stupid cultural questions and answered those. We needed a driver and he had a great driver for us.He picked us up at our hotel and took care of throughout the day.
