We did the cave tour the day before and were delighted to see our guide Martin again. It was a smaller group to Rocamadour, so it was fewer people interrupting his excellent storytelling. We began at the end of the via dolorosa and worked our way down, which is easier than going up the stairs. The shrine of the Black Madonna was intensely sacred. Like the caves, don’t take pictures of her! Sit and contemplate the mysteries.

I was amazed at just how much we got to see during this trip. Rouffignac alone would have been worth the cost—it was truly emotional to see the art in person—but along the drive Martin managed to fit so many other sites in. His knowledge is exhaustive, and he left me with a couple of great book recommendations. The museum stop was great; I’m surprised we’re still learning so many new things about our ancestors just from this small region and Les Eyzies was a cute place to walk around at lunchtime. I was skeptical that Lascaux would feel meaningful as it’s a replica, but I found that the tour there where they talked about artistic techniques was a great way to round out the day.
A couple of things to keep in mind:
1. While much of the trip is accessible, those with limited mobility might find it to be a lot of walking. We had some older folks in our group who seemed to have a harder time with the long day.
2. At Rouffignac, the tour is in French. Martin had a headset for everyone and translated during the tour, but I found it difficult hearing both languages at once and ended up removing the headset. I understand enough French to get something out of the tour without translation, and I’m glad I chose to focus on what I could see and could ask follow up questions later. If you’re someone like me at an advanced intermediate level, go without the headset and take in the sights instead.
3. Please bring cash to tip your guide! Martin went out of his way to drop people at their hotels in the rain and no one else tipped him. I couldn’t believe the rudeness.
4. I can’t believe this has to be said but don’t take pictures in the cave.

This tour exceeded my expectations. Maarten is passionate about history and provided excellent commentary throughout the afternoon. His ability to explain historic events through storytelling is unrivaled. We saw three jaw-dropping villages (the river was unnavigable due to high water). I highly recommend Maarten and this tour.

Our trip to Rocamadour was beyond excellent. We did not even notice the cloudy, drizzly weather because Bernoit took such great care of us. It is a tour I will never forget--I highly recommend it.

Martin is an outstanding guide--he beautifully outlines the history of Sarlat and keeps his clients captivated with his storytelling and enthusiasm. My friend and I were on the morning Walking and Market Tour and the afternoon Dordogne Villages Tour, and I highly recommend BOTH!

Wonderful half day tour including 3 villages. Martin was a wealth of historical information on the changes over hundreds of years here in the Dordogne Valley.

This walking tour through Sarlat on a market day was fantastic. The food and wine tastings combined with a little history of the region and the town were the perfect combination for an enjoyable morning. Ann is an informed and engaging guide who answered all the questions with a smile and made sure that we understood the answer. I HIGHLY recommend this tour.

Rocamadour is an amazing site to see! I highly recommend it. Our guide Benoit was not at all animated or interesting. After traveling with Anne, guide extraordinaire, the day before on another Ophorus tour, this one felt flat. It was a rainy day but the weather had nothing to do with it. There was no enthusiasm on the part of the guide. I was very, very disappointed that we did not get to go on the ramparts. There is a machine where you put in a 2-euro coin and it gives you a ticket to scan to open the gate for access to the rampart. Three of us tried it and it did not work. We put in our coins and scanned our tickets but the gate did not open. A few minutes later, we saw a large group of about 20 to 25 people led by a guide. They all went in to the ramparts immediately, within a minute. The guide must have had a key or other access to the ramparts that our guide did not have. So, we lost money, and did not get on the ramparts! That was a huge disappointment, since I had been looking forward to seeing Rocamadour more than anything else in my trip in the Dordogne.

Anne was a great guide - very animated, very knowledgeable, and always putting the guests’ interests first. The boat ride was nice, but the speaker on the boat trip needs to change his narrative. I listened to the French because it is impossible to listen to the English version on the headphones while he is speaking. He made a lot of jokes that even the native French speakers did not get, and a lot of them were political jokes. That is totally inappropriate for a vacation tour with tourists of several nationalities. Loved Beynac and la Roque-Gageac. Enjoyed Domme, but we did not have enough time there. All in all, the tour and our guide Anne were top notch, and I realize they have no control over the narrator on the boat, but perhaps Ophorus could make him aware of the discomfort he causes.

Hi I am arriving in Bordeaux on 13th July 2018 I would like to experience Bastille Day in Bordeaux.
Between 14th July and 19th I would like most of all to see all there is of the prehistory and archeological museums and sites in the area before moving on to Chartres by the 19th.
I can find general information but cannot find how to book a tour, where it would start from Bordaux or Sarlat de Caneda.

We have two children (8 and 6) and are after a guide who can make things interesting for them. So, less about the dry history and the dates, and more about the people and the what they did and how they lived. Are your guides able to do so?

Yes our guides can adapt to children but this is possible only on a private tour and not on a shared tour.

I actually run the company that organizes these tours. All tours are in English and are conducted by licensed tour guides. Tours are for small groups of 8 persons maximum and take place in recent and comfortable A/C equipped Mercedes minivans. Hope that helped, don't hesitate if you have other questions.
