We were fortunate to visit in late December when crowds were light, so we just walked in. But it would be worth any wait during busier times. There is so much French history inside these walls. All the kings and queens of France have some portion of their remains entombed here, each marked by spectacular carved sarcophagi. A self-guided tour is sufficienct to enjoy the grandeur of the entire displays and cathedral, although guided tours are an option. What a feeling to experience the feeling of building that dates back 1000 years!

According to legend, in the area where the Basilica of Saint-Denis is located, in the distant third century AD, Saint Dionysius died. He was beheaded on the summit of Montmartre. The French believe he walked for a full six kilometres holding his own head and then died near a nearby village. This village was later named Saint-Denis after the saint. And where his grave is, they built a chapel in the 5th century. In 625, by royal order, an abbey and monastery were built in this place. In time, the monastery church was built instead of the chapel.
In the 8th century the abbey was like a fortification. A water ditch was dug around him. The way to get through it to the abbey was through a lift bridge. Despite such fortifications, the basilica was severely damaged during the attack by Sigebert's troops. It was then reconstructed, and the abbey became a church school, libraries, and rich houses. In the 12th century, Saint-Denis was rebuilt, giving the abbey a Gothic style. The work was carried out for 20 years. That's when the remains of the French monarchs were transferred. During the French Revolution, the abbey was looted. The historical and cultural monument of France was subsequently restored.
The Abbey of Saint-Denis in its modern form was designed by the talented architect Eugène Violet, who in 1846–1869 was involved in the restoration of the temple and tombs destroyed during the Revolution. The modern basilica attracts guests with its magnificent 12th-century western facade, which is marked by a plaque dedicated to Joan of Arc.
The Basilica of Saint-Denis was the last refuge for 43 kings, 32 queens and 10 servants of the French monarchy. It features the largest collection of funeral sculptures from the 12th to 16th centuries. The abbey contains more than 70 lying statues and monumental tombs from the Renaissance. The most prominent of these is the tomb of Henry II and Catherine Medici, decorated with 12 columns. At the corners of the tomb rise four statues made of bronze. They are symbols of the virtues of the Christian faith.
On the tombstone are statues of the deceased spouses, and next to it are sculptures depicting living monarchs kneeling for prayer. The tomb of the royal consorts Anne of Breton and Louis XII, installed in the basilica in the 16th century, is in the same style. Of particular interest is the last burial of the French monarch, which took place in 2004. This is the tombstone of Louis XVII, where the vessel with his heart is placed. At the centre of the abbey stands a statue of Saint Dionysius. There are also sarcophagus with saintly figures.
A ticket to visit the tomb of the kings and queens of France costs 11 euros, and admission to the abbey itself is free.

This basilica is the resting place of every single monarch in France's history. The church itself is beautiful, and the added bonus of the kings crypts makes it well worth the trip to Saint-Dennis.

Incredible and moving tour of what makes France great.
However... the outside of the Basilica is a shame: an ice rink at the exit of the Basilica or music stuns you immediately after the visit, tents housing food (halal) everywhere... "beautiful winter" on the signs. And perhaps the worst, the extension of the town hall that adjoins the basilica like a dark wart. What a pity
Who could have let such ugliness build so close to this historic monument? Who let this happen in a place where we unfortunately feel like we're no longer in France

Loved this - highly recommend it! Very easy to reach via Metro line 13. The church itself is about 4 mins from the station, fronting a huge square and across from the city hall.

This has tremendous historical significance as the place where royalty was entombed for almost 1200 years. Befitting kings or queens, they were buried in marble sarcophagi with effigies on top. The audio guide is excellent and gives the option to press buttons for "further information". I learned all about the different of effigies throughout the millennia, why some had animals carved at their feet (and why the type of animals mattered); handling of entrails and heart; effigy carving styles. There are 42 kings, 32 queens, 63 princesses/princes plus stray dukes buried in over 70 recumbent tombs.

But beyond the tombs, it has amazing stained glass windows. The Abbot who coordinated the 12th c renovations felt light was the path to spirituality so he wanted a ton of windows, narrow columns, so that the windows would not be overwhelmed, and, contrary to every other church I’ve been in, there are no walls between the chapels so you have an uninterrupted wall of light.

Not many visitors so you can wander at will and absorb everything. (There's a crypt too.)

Magnificent basilica, the first Gothic work in history, is worth a visit to see up close all the typical details of this art.

It is the cathedral where Marie Antoinette is sleeping. The stained glass basilica that I first saw when I arrived in France was very solemn.
It is just a short walk from Basiliksandni Metro Station. I saw a lot of shops on the straight road from the square in front of the cathedral, but I didn't have time to visit only the cathedral this time. When I told them I was Japanese when I got the brochure at the reception desk, they said in broken Japanese.
A young woman said thank you.
There was also a shop in the temple that sold a little souvenir.
There are many coffins of the French royal family, but when I saw the words Marie Antoinette, again, my heart shook.
