Allows you to climb to the gazebo effortlessly!

A rare and unusual way to experience visiting the two Unpacked places of Thonon-les-Baines: The historic funicular railway, originally built in 1888, connects the park-surrounded, extensive harbour with the upper town and its sights at an altitude difference of 40 metres.
Interesting facts: Line length 230 meters and the only funicular in Europe that crosses oncoming traffic in a curve. Originally it was operated with a counterweight system of 11 tons of water; since 1956 it has been equipped with electric drive and, like the pretty station, has been lovingly and perfectly restored.
At the Parc du Belvédère next to the high-altitude station a Scenic View of Lake Geneva and the direct access to the old town with its worth seeing Basilica of Saint-Francois de Sales.

Practical! No air conditioning and cobwebs everywhere in and out of the craft and station ... instead of sitting around doing nothing behind the counter ... give them a broom!

Fortunately this funicular exists because on a walk with my elderly parents it allowed us to not go back to the town where we were staying on foot from the lake because the coast is still difficult. Fair price for the effort saved 😁👍

Our specialist in means of transport, Benoît, takes us to discover the Thonon les Bains funicular, which connects the town center of the upper town, the lower town, its old fishing village, and the port, with a view, superb, on the port of Rives and on Lake Geneva. An ingenuity of the Swiss civil engineer Auguste Alesmonières, because it is the only funicular of this type, coming and going, on a single track, in Europe, or even in the World, where the cabins cross each other in a curve , on a siding. Benoît explains to us that the line is 243 meters long, with 86.8 meters of curve, for a difference in altitude of 46 meters which is compensated by an average ramp of 21%. Inaugurated in 1888, this funicular required, for its traction, that a counterweight, that is to say a filling, with water, ensured its descent, with 11 tonnes of water, which was supplied by the Municipality. Built in wood, originally, with two classes of transport - first and second class -, plus a surface for luggage, and transportable foodstuffs and materials, and this under the supervision of drivers in white coats , blue-collar workers, who maneuvered, speed by crank brakes. In 1936, the cabins were now made of metal. A small renovation, in 1951, then, in 1956, it was electrified, with motor traction. Since 1989, the new installation has been fully automated, with a capacity, of each new cabin, of 54 seats, painted green-white, of 8.5 tonnes, empty, for a journey of 3 minutes, with a departure frequency every 5 minutes. That is, a relative capacity of 1582 passengers, per hour and per direction of traffic, but which the Municipality has reduced, to remain within a standard of 616 passengers, as a safety measure. The automatic control-command is set by an operator from the arrival station at Le Lac.

Unfortunately for a year this funicular, usually so practical, has been breaking down more and more often like this evening! So when there is no longer any indication of the alternative means of returning to the city, and we are no longer old enough to climb a huge difference in altitude, we see that respect for customers is the least of their concerns but that the price of the subscription has increased by 60% in one year. Lamentable!

Saving time to visit the basilica, go to the tourist office when you are parked near the port rather than going around in circles looking for parking

the journey is not very expensive but it is not very long either; when it works it's fine but a priori it is often broken down, on the way out we had to wait then get off the funicular then wait and get back in, in short a bit of a hassle for what it is

Bonjour et bon séjour probable. L'hébergement, qualité/prix, indiscutablement l'hôtel "IBIS Thonon-Evian" voir ci dessus, en plein centre mais parc et verdure à proximité et à 30 mètres d'une vue majestueuse sur le port et le lac Léman !!! De plus restaurants à des tarifs très corrects. Séjour avec véhicule, avec les plus belles montagnes de Haute Savoie, il serait souhaitable de compter sur 2 à 3 jours pour se faire de grands moments de plaisir. Je vous recommande ce séjour pour moi je dirais "idyllique" !!!
