We drive the Gentle Annie Highway from Waiouru to Napier and we’re lucky to have stunning weather. The road is fully sealed and an easy drive. Make sure to have a full tank and also snacks & drinks as there are no facilities along the way. Great scenery and views back to Mt Ruapehu from several spots. Highly recommended drive.

Wonderful scenery. Good road, up and down and twists and turns but nothing alarming. Takes about 3 hours. We drove in February. Might be more difficult in depth of winter.

We travelled this highway in Dec 2019 and were so pleased we took the route less travelled. Be aware, it is a long road with no fuel stations!
First the road is quite steep and hilly with lots of sharp turns thru forests etc then approaching Napier more rolling countryside with farmland.
All in all, breathtaking scenery, you won't be disappointed.

Best accessed from the Makahu Saddle Car Park (via Whittle Rd), if the weather is good it is only a 3h/800m ascent up Makahu Spur to the summit (1724m) with good views the whole way. Once there you can stride several kilometres along the gently undulating main range. An excellent day out.

There are also some shorter 2-3h return bushwalks around the base to Kaweka Flats for example. Along with some basic huts/bivs to stay in.

After years of driving past this scenic road, (40 years) today I decided to take the turn off on State-1 just 20 south of Waiuru and cruise through. The sun was shining and it was a glorious drive. I wish I had taken more time to stop and take more pictures, this is something that needs to be planned.
Driving through heartland NZ was such a wonderful experience. (and oh...make sure you have plently in the tank, it's 145k's between fueling stations.

This was one of the highlights of our Winter time road trip around the Nth Island.
We travelled to Waiouru from Napier and it was absolutely breath taking.
We came across a herd of wild horses and stopped to take pictures of them in the snow. One large stallion approached us. My husband was able to have a real up close encounter with this magnificent beast and it was truly a *life long memory* moment.
Road was good, scenery amazing.
Loved it.

Originally a Maori track but now a fully paved road. It travelling west to east the first half is rolling farm land with numerous sheep and cattle stations. The second half sees hillsides covered in native forest and a road with lots of twists and turns - superb scenery. There are no petrol stations or cafes/restaurants along the road, so take a picnic and just soak in the stunning views. A great alternative route to travel between Taupo and Napier.

This road is excellent for motorcyclist and mustn't be missed. Unfortunately we rode it during a rainy day making the road wet and slippery in places. Get petrol before embarking on Gentle Annie Hwy as there are no petrol stops along the way. Scenery was breathtaking despite the poor weather. A word of caution...beware of the loose road surface (grit) were the road has been repaired.

We drove the Gentle Annie in our 7 metre motorhome & stayed 3 nights. First at the suspension bridge a community run camp for self contained vehicles. Beautiful swim in river, neat place for a night. We travelled on & stopped at Kiripapango DOC camp for 2 nights where we enjoyed bush walks & river swims. Before leaving the area we did the return walk to Twin Lakes; very easy for two 60 plus year olds. Not a hard walk for any age.

This road used to be a dusty old goat track but now that it is fully sealed it presents an awesome drive through magnificent NZ scenery
