Beautiful old cog railway from the 1950s, which saves you the strenuous climb. Actually, the driveway is enough, but it is hardly more expensive with the return trip. I first went all the way up to the observation deck, then walked 800 m downhill to Drachenburg and then back to the valley by train. Timetables are not displayed, it is better to research the network in advance or ask at the valley station. For train and castle tour of the Dragon Castle there are also combination tickets with a 20% discount.

Been in operation since 1883 Jan-Nov every full hour and half hour. It is Germany's oldest cogwheel railway up the legendary Drachenfels in the Rhine passing oldest nature reserve about halfway.
Can walk it if super fit.
Splendid views once leave carriage from approx 1000 feet high of the winding Rhine and surrounding scenery.
Do not forget ones camera.
Spacious cafe nearby plus climb up to ruins of old castle to get an even better view.

For those who are available, you can walk to the top by a trail covered by native vegetation and not so steep in about 30min walking slowly.
Those who do not want to thicken their legs can pick up the small car that leaves every 15 minutes and costs 12 euros, stopping before at the castle before reaching the top for the beautiful view of the Rhine and Bona.

This is a relatively inexpensive (and certainly easier!) way to get up the steep hill.
I bought my ticket at the station at the bottom. I got a combination ticket that included the train ride to the top and back, and a self-guided tour of Drachenburg Castle. You can get off the train at the castle (middle station), and then later ride up to the top on the same ticket.
The train carriage came along about every 30 minutes when I was there. It’s a really short ride. They do pack everyone in tightly. The scenery is mostly trees.

On holiday in the Rhine area, we took the Drachenfelsbahn. What a lovely old mountain railway (funicular). On the way up we passed the middle station on the way to the top with great views and a nice restaurant. On the way back we did stop at the middle station to visit the castle. A great experience in a lovely environment, well worth the visit.

We went on a day trip from Frankfurt to Königswinter with 12 people by train. After strengthening in a restaurant, we walked to the valley station and took the next train up.
The ride was a beautiful experience, which was then crowned on top of the platform by a fantastic view of the Siebengebirge and the Rhine.
On the way back we visited the castle Drachenfels. To do this, you have to get off at the middle station and can then get back on to the descent later.
The staff of Drachenfelsnahn are friendly, competent and helpful. All operations are seated.
As I said, this ride is a "must!"

Instead of wearing on the soles of the shoes (and legs), this means of transport was chosen up to castles and mountains. The train runs relatively often and the ticket is moderately expensive. Riding this train can be recommended to be done.

in my childehood i visited the drachenfels by donkey. is that still possible and what ship ride do you have to take from Bonn to get there ?

You can take a train to Troisdorf and a bus from there. Same travel time and much, much cheaper. I did not see donkeys, but the vintage tram is still in operation.

Does anyone know when the train runs until, on the website I could only see that in 2014 it stopped running on the 16th November for winter (reopened 1st January). We are going on the 22nd November this year and wanted to know if it will be running?

Last trip this year is November 15th.
It restarts on January 1st, 2016 at 11 AM.
There is a special trip on November 28 and 29 from 12 PM to 8 PM but apparently it stops in the middle of the way at a castle for a special celebration.
You do not have to take the tram though. You may climb the mountain on a paved path right besides the railway. It is a nice walk and not too steep.

Can I use the Day ticket for North Rhine-Westphalia (SchönerTagTicket NRW), or do I have to buy a separate ticket for it? The Bahn website says "This ticket entitles you to travel on all local trains (RE, RB, S-Bahn) and on buses, subways and trams of all transport associations in North Rhine-Westphalia", so is this one train included? Thanks!

No, the NRW ticket can be used in DB trains. Drachenfelsbahn is operated by Siebengebirge AG.
