This was the second time I have visited, and it was just as enjoyable as the first time. The ruins are impressive as they are, and if you have a good imagination you can see how very impressive the castle must have been when it was intact. The views from the castle over the Rhine gorge are also impressive.
There is some ongoing restoration work, which affects access to some parts of the castle.
The last time I was here, we walked up. It's a scenic walk, but there's quite a bit of elevation gain. This time we did it the easy way and used the shuttle bus (both up and down). it's the #681 bus, and it leaves from the main plaza in Sankt Goar, which is a short distance from the train station. If I were to do it again, I'd take the bus up (less strenuous), but walk down, as the walk down is quite scenic. Also, the last bus down leaves at 5 PM, whereas the castle itself closes at 6 PM, so walking down leaves more time to explore the castle if you arrive in the afternoon.

The Castle is on a steep hill overlooking the valley and there's lots of good photo opportunities (some without paying to go in). Inside the castle you got the sense of the life of the castle through the small museum there. The guide was incredibly generous to us, giving us a family tour of the tunnels despite it not being a day when they were normally open. Our kids loved the echos in the vaulted cellar, which is absolutely massive!

We ferried from Bacharach to St. Goar, and found the small bus depot between the river and the main walking street of St. Goar. Taking the bus is about 2 Euros one way. A taxi could be had for twice the amount. If you have time, one could also walk up to the castle.
Rheinfels was once the largest castle along the Rhein region. It was big enough to withstand a 28,000 French army attack in the late 17th century. One of the main reasons it failed, as described on a display in the museum (English and German), is that a master woodturner shot a rifle bullet 200m and severely wounded the French leader, Marshal de Tallard.
Today, there is a hotel, a restaurant and a small museum inside the castle.
Later in the 18th century, the French did manage to take the castle and destroy large parts of the fortification. What you see is just a small part—five times less-- of the gigantic castle that once dominated over the Rhein River. Nevertheless, what you do see is interesting. Also, the views from the castle are magnificent overlooking the village of St. Goar and the Rhein River.
The fee is practically nominal to see the castle. We did enjoy the museum holding various artifacts from this castle which was built in the mid-thirteenth century. There is a model reconstruction inside the museum. At one time the walls were 13 feet thick and the tower 177 feet tall. This castle could hold over 4,000 people during a siege. During peacetime, the castle usually held 300 plus people.
We did not have any time for a tour. But, having a tour would be to your advantage on understanding more about the history and times of Schloss Rheinfels. If you found this review to be “helpful” in any way, please click “Thumbs-up” to let me know.

Moderately steep hike up the road or trail to the entrance, with a minimal entry fee and small museum with artifacts and history. Walk around the ruins and get all the views! We got there pretty close to closing time, but still had a nice visit. Staff were helpful and spoke good English. We dined on the lovely terrace (left entrance, right upstairs is fancy) and had tasty local fare, watching the sun set. Beautiful area!

We aren’t history museum or sightseeing people so this wasn’t very interesting for us. We knew it was ruins but thought it was a “when in Germany” experience and it was just that. Rheinstein, on the other hand, was fantastic!

This would have been a huge complex, the size of a small town, but now only ruins remain of the central parts.
There is not a huge amount to see but an explanatory pamphlet provided in English, along with some signage. I believe you can explore more widely, especially the tunnel areas if you sign up for a guided tour. There is also a good little museum that gives the history of the castle (again in English) and contains a model of how the castle would have looked, which is interesting.
Regular entrance is 6 euro.

It was definitely worth the trip to St. Goars to visit and explore the castle ruins. Great history and photo ops throughout. The castle is large and quite fun to scramble around. Entrance fee but well worth it.

It’s really just a castle ruin, but for the minimal entrance fee it’s worth a short visit. Prior to Napoleon blowing it up, it was probably pretty imposing. There are great views from the tower. One needs to pay for parking at the castle and restaurant. 2€ was good for 2.5 hours and the machine accepted coins.

Zeer indrukwekkende ruïne om rustig te bekijken, maar nog beter met een gids, want dan mag je meer zien. Zeer interessant, ook cultuur-historisch. Je kunt er veel over zeggen, maar dit is iets wat je echt moet beleven.

It was not difficult. My wife and I hike pretty often and this is an easy hill to go up. Take it on foot if you are in good health.

We're stopping to see the Burg Rheinfels on the K-D boat line and we have 1 hr 25 minutes until the last boat will pick up at St. Goar. Is 1 hr 25 mins enough time to get up to the castle, take a quick tour and get back down?
Is it easy to find a taxi in town that will take us up? Or is it better to take the tourist train up?
撰写日期:2018年4月13日
If you have only 1 hour 25 mins then I strongly recommend to take car or taxi to reach up so that you can atleast spend 30-40 mins at the castle. Coming down is easy and faster will take 15 mins so you can chose to walk down .
You can find taxi or cars to reach up there.

We are arriving on a Sunday. The tourist information office will be closed. Are there lockers or is there anywhere to safely store our carry on bags while we tour the castle?

Как мне добраться туда на общественном транспорте от главного ж/д вокзала ?
