Super view worth walking the stairs! But you can also walk from above about 10min walk.
Next time the via ferrata! Right across the waterfall looked very nice and exciting!

We have already stood in front of several waterfalls and cataracts in Europe and America. But none fascinated us as much as the Stuibenfall. It is "lower", has less water and is less powerful than most of the well-known ones, but none was as overwhelming. This is certainly also due to how you experience it: the path through the forest is steep and breathtaking - especially at the end. But the streams along the path give you a feeling for the water that is audibly falling into the depths in the distance. Mosses and ferns give an impression of the wetness, spray and mist that envelops the forest. The closer the hiker climbs, the more it rushes and suddenly you see the waterfall - a little way - in the distance. The path leads towards it in serpentines. You can look at it from below on three platforms. If you take a look at the banks, you will see blue gentians, giant ferns and other botanical beauties. At the end there is the option of climbing up to the edge of the waterfall on an almost free-floating staircase parallel to the waterfall. It's not just the dozens of steps but the view and the experience that will make your pulse race. Magnificent. Climbers can scale the waterfall on the other side of the river in the climbing garden. Does that make sense?

We hiked to the Stuibenfall, Austria, in August 2023.
At over 500' tall (159m), Stuibenfall is one of Austria’s tallest and most impressive waterfalls. Like many visitors, we parked our car at the Bischofsplatz parking lot in Umhausen, just off the Niederthierstrasse. This same road continues past the parking lot to switchback up the mountain to the town of Niederthai (more on that later).
It's a short walk from Bischofsplatz to the rushing brook created by the waterfall, passing a small recreational lake and an archeological site. You'll know you're on the right path as the brook will always be on your left. It's a pretty, forested walk, but also steadily uphill. You cannot even see the waterfall most of the way.
There are 5 signposted viewpoints along the path, with the first 2 appearing near the base of the falls. It's from here that you can finally see the full force (and size) of the falls, as well as the remarkable suspension bridge that you will need to cross to get to the other side of the gorge and up to the top of the falls. There is a resting area nearby and anyone not wanting to tackle the bridge and stairs can relax here and just enjoy the view. This is also the spot where climbers gather to prepare to climb the via ferrata up the left side of the falls.
After viewpoint #2 the path switchbacks up to the suspension bridge, a 264' (80m) long marvel that is not simply a way to get across the gorge to the falls, but is stepped so you go up as well as across. At the upper end you'll reach viewpoint #3 which is guaranteed to get you soaked from the spray. From here you can also look up and see the final viewpoint (#5), a small platform jutting out over the brink of the falls.
To get there you must climb up higher using a set of suspended stairways. From viewpoint #4 you can see the full force of the water as it plunges downward. Once at the top, a short path leads to platform #5. It's amazing the rather small brook you cross can become such a raging waterfall once it reaches the edge. There is also a great view down towards the suspension bridge.
You return to the Bischofsplatz parking lot the same way you came up. However, once at the top there is also a path to the nearby village of Niederthai. It's possible you could get a ride back down from there, or even have arranged for a pickup. As mentioned, the Niederthierstrasse continues past the Bischofsplatz up to Niederthai, so it's possible to do the hike in reverse, starting at the top.
Along the path to the falls are several stops encouraging hikers to do breathing exercises. Later we read that a University study had found that people, especially those with asthma, could greatly increase their lung function by breathing in air near a waterfall. An hour at the Stuibenfall was recommended. If you do this full hike to the top of the falls and back, we also recommend a well-deserved massage at the Aqua Dome thermal spa in nearby Langenfeld.

Place to visit. Don't be afraid of the number of steps to climb because when you do it at your own pace while contemplating the landscape, you don't realize that you have already reached the top. At the top, it's easy to find a nice little place along the river to catch your breath and take the time to take a little break (why not with your feet in the water).

Magnificent uphill route the equivalent of 85 floors, several platforms and a suspended staircase in total 700 steps plus the path.
Bring good shoes and be in good shape, the ideal is to do it early in the morning to avoid the crowds.
Very beautiful waterfall and as a reward at the top but without a view a bar restaurant.

Car parked in the small city center parking lot. First following ´wasserfall´ the beginning of the route on the asphalt and before the forest is not very pleasant. Then you enter the forest and then face the steps. Without being an athlete, you need a minimum level of physical condition to reach the summit, notably after an impressive footbridge/stairs above the void. On your return, a little nap on the swing next to the witch will help you recover from your emotions. Allow 90 minutes from the parking lot to the summit. Impressive view.

Hi, where did you park? did you have to walk the same way down? or is there any kind of shuttle to take you down?
Thank you.

We parked at Niederthai village next to the tourist information.
The parking is paid parking, and you need to get a ticket from the tickets machine (if I recall, it doesn't take bills so have coins ready).
From there, we walked about 20-30 minutes to the top of the falls.
There is another parking at the bottom of the falls next to the Ötzi-Dorf.
During high season, there might be a shuttle between the 2 parking, but we were offseason, so I don't know about that.
My wife went down with the kids on the fall pathway, and I went from the top of the fall back to the car to bring it down and meat them at the Ötzi-Dorf parking (which is paid parking as well BTW)
Hope it helps you.

Hi, I saw that there is also a climbing option (Via ferrata), suitable also for beginners, alongside the waterfall.
Can anyone provide some additional info about it?
