We done the Eureka Express to Ballarat and was very impressed with the operations on the day . Loco and carriages were in pristine condition and someone was always there for assistance plus keeping us informed on any stoppages for other trains to pass . Buffet car was open with staff working well with food at very reasonable prices . Was a great day

My wife and a couple of family members did a trip from Castlemaine to Echuca and it was very nostalgic.
Watching the scenery pass by as we rumbled down the tracks with the whistle blowing intermittently so as to announce our arrival to the many ppl that lined the track along the way.
The train had a 40 minute stop either way in Bendigo and a 3 hr stopover at Echuca which made for a pretty big day but it was very relaxing and enjoyable.
There is nothing like the sound of a steam train chugging along at top speed!
If you’re a steam train enthusiast, then this will be heaven for you 👍

We heard the whistle of a steam loco and wondered what it was about. Finding a reference on the internet to free shuttles between Caulfield and Moorabbin that day, we rushed to one of the stops and after a while found ourselves in one of a number 100 year old electric rail carriages, with steam locos A2 986 and K153 at each end. It was a hot day and we sweltered in the ancient carriage, but there was a cooling breeze from the open windows. The Steamrail staff in each carriage kept us informed about what was going on and told us the history of the vehicles. An unexpected adventure.

Two grandparents, three children and four grandchildren. Great fun for all. We travelled from Flinders Street on an old red rattler driven by a steam engine. Plenty of room for everyone, time to take photos and the folk running the day were courteous, helpful and informative. Steam Rail Victoria love trains and want others to know and love trains too..
It was a cold wet day so if this is the case for you, rug up. Best, I think, to take a picnic from home as take away is limited and expensive for a large family. Easy to buy hot chocolate and coffees though. You cannot take a pram or stroller onto the train but they are kept securely on the station.
I would recommend this for all ages and hope to travel again when the family is together.
Our grandchildren live in remote NSW so trains and in particular steam trains are a great treat for them.

For two oldies in their eighties and a daughter, this was a great adventure. Steam train to Geelong in the morning, time for lunch before a stroll to the waterfront to board the 'Victoria Star, a former Sydney ferry, now restored and operating cruises from Dockside. The train journey was a trip down memory lane with the added pleasure of seeing people with cameras at most level crossings, as well as railway men photographing the train as we passed through the rail yards. Graham, a volunteer, was full of information and happy to pass it on. In Geelong, there was adequate time to stroll to the waterfront, where there are cafes and restaurants for a lunch. Then a short walk to Steampacket Pier to board the 'Victoria Star', a former Sydney Ferry and now, after a restoration, a cruising boat-for-hire. The return journey was calm and comfortable, around the bay and up the Yarra river to Dockside, under the Westgate and Bolte Bridges. This was a memorable day out and I'm sure we'll be back for more

Magnificent trip to Wycheproof, Victoria behind N472 and T356. Later we will be behind recently restored steam locomotive A2986.
Great train handling by Tony and Murray. Cathy managing train magnificently.
A great last trip to Wycheproof on the 5'3' gauge for the very last time.

I hadn't been on a Steamrail tour for a while.
The April 2017 suburban shuttles were excellent.
The one I was on - to Essendon - ran on time and was a delight travelling in the former red sliding door suburban cars called the Tait cars.
Volunteers were friendly and it was different to have a steam loco at each end, one of them the very historic, more than a century old D3 639, the grand old dame.
Highly recommended.

It was a 10o'clock start from Southern Cross Station to Geelong. Two Steam Trains running in parallel to Geelong and then back to Melb. What a fun day hearing the old steam train whistle and watching the trains lead then fall back to allow the other to lead. If was fun watching the passengers on the opposing train and occasionally having a chat.
Steamrail trips are well worth the money. I've now been on a few this year and plan to buy a membership for 2017. Discounts on train trips throughout the year.
Volunteers are very friendly and easy to talk with. A must for individuals, couples or families.
