You can see why this place is described as the prettiest village in the Yorkshire Dales. Several village Greens give this place an open and welcoming feel. The church is situated in the centre of the village and has has some lovely stained glass windows. We did a circular walk over to Eggleston and Mickleton, and back via the old railway line, which gives commanding views of the whole dale.

Lovely area.

We were walking the Teesdale Way from Whorlton to Middleton in Teesdale which took us through the small village of Romaldkirk. It seems a lovely place and having read reviews about the church, we wandered over for a quick look.

The church grounds are filled with very VERY old gravestones, oldest that we saw from 1820's and all 1800's, so this was interesting to see.

We didn't want to intrude and go inside the church, but walked a full circle around the small church grounds, which only took about 10 minutes even though we were stopping frequently to look at the very old gravestones.

The Church of Saint Romald is situated in the charming and picturesque village of Romaldkirk and is well worth visiting. The church is an impressive structure in the centre of the village and, as far as I am aware, is the only church that is dedicated to St Romald, who was apparently the son of a Northumbrian King, albeit there are no historical records attesting to that “fact”.

The interior of the church is spacious and has a wonderfully “rough” feel to it, and the bulk of the stonework, with open faced walls almost like drystone dykes, is lovely. As is the case with most ancient churches, the actual age of the structure spans several centuries and the oldest parts of the church, the walls on either side of the Chancel Arch, date back to Saxon times.

There is much of interest to discover here, and there is a most useful guide outlining the main things to see. I won’t therefore list them here, but highlights for me were the font, which is either Norman or a 13th century copy (how shocking!); and the remains of the old pulpit, dating from 1728, which includes a clerk’s pew, a woman’s “churching” pew, and the reader’s pew. This is the first time I’ve come across a woman’s churching pew and I believe that the ritual of “churching” a woman was to bless and purify her after childbirth.

I also liked the effigy of Sir Hugh Fitzhenry, which is situated in the north transept, and has splendid detail of the armour.

And almost best of all was coming out of the church and taking time to take in the sheer beauty and peaceful ambience of the village in front of me. In a way, it felt rather timeless - apart from the two pubs of course!

Only 100 yards from our hotel, The Rose and Crown, this little church was welcoming, even though empty. It’s history inside was well presented. A local was playing the piano brilliantly.
It’s stained glass windows were from local families. The labels on “exhibits” were very informative.

A real gem.

Dans ce beau village de maisons de pierre, l'église de style gothique, entourée de son cimetière, est typiquement anglaise. L'intérieur mérite aussi un coup d'oeil : fonts baptismaux romans, gisant de chevalier du XIIIe s., etc.

The interior and exterior of this very old church reputed to date in places from Saxon times is well worth time spent in exploring in detail. The interior is very calming with a number of interesting feaures and dedications. The architecture is of a fairly standard design and incorporats a fairly squat, square bell tower. Externally the gravestones represent a number of varied styles across a number centuries and contain some extremely interesting and moving dedications, in particular a number of the stones on each side of the path close to the main entrance.

This beautiful church located in Romaldkirk is absolutely stunning . We could not get inside as it was locked. The cemetery around it has many old pre 1900 tombstones. This church is worth a drive out of your way to see. I will add pictures when I return home to USA
