Turned off Dynon road into a dirt road by a number of construction sites to this marvellous set of buildings and the monumental golden statue of the Heavenly Queen. All of it is set by the recently flooding Maribyrnong River with the city skyline on the other side. Whilst it was a colourful sight from outside it was even more ornate inside with a number of Taoist deities statues there with their altars. Quite a spectacular touch of the old orient in central Melbourne. Well worth the trouble to visit if you are interested in other cultures and religions.

Footscray is developing rapidly, as evidenced bby the construction underway near the Heavenly Queen Temple.. Apart from anything else, the ceremonial gate, with the traditional "three entrances" is well worth seeing. Many Asian people do worship here, but visitors are welome.

On each visit the complex makes some progress towards completion.

Matsu (or Mazu), is a deity initially worshipped in south China. Matsu is both a Taoist and Buddhist goddess. Matsu was a young woman with miraculous powers, including quieting storms. She was born in Fujian Province in 960 AD and died in her late 20s. There are over 1,500 temples dedicated to Matsu around the world, including China and Taiwan.. To enter the temple, you pass through a tall gate with three portals, made in traditional Chinese style. The Heavenly Queen statue is on an island; The statue was made in Nanjing, in south China. As is usual with Chinese temples, other deities are worshipped including Guan Yin, the Buddhist goddess of mercy, and Guan Yu, who is both the god of business and of war. You can recognise him by his red face. The god of wealth is also worshipped. The temple can be accessed from Hopkins St. Look for the signs.. The surrounding area is now a giant building site, but the construction workers are co-operative.

Lovely, colourful, interesting temple, equal or nicer than some we have seen overseas. Pretty setting near Maribyrnong River. An interesting contrast to the very old, nicely restored Joss House in Raglan Street, South Melb.

The temple has started to show a bit of wear and tear, especially the statue. The road leading to the temple is not all sealed and therefore after heavy rain, could be problematic for some. The size of the temple is about average and the statue is well crafted. It looks impressive from a distance, and that's about the attraction of this place-from a distance. The care takers of the place have lots of work to do, e.g the surrounding garden. Give it time hopefully it will come good.

The Heavenly Queen gazes serenely over the Maribyrnong River. I had seen this from the train and made the trek to Footscray on Sunday to find the temple. Down a narrow dirt road - trusting in Google maps - we came across the enormous temple. You have to walk around the temple to see the Heavenly Queen and it is even more breathtaking up close than from the train window. It has a fascinating backstory (Google it). Truly one of the great wonders of multicultural Melbourne.

We saw this beautiful temple from the street and decided to visit and took some photos. Too bad it was closed, so we can only took photos from outside the fence. Couldn't see the beautiful statue of Kuanyin from where we parked.

This is a site that is right on the river and the foot/bike path that runs by it. It's a wonderful place to go if you're looking for an outing or just want a place to stop and rest on your way.
It is open to the public and very welcoming, especially given that it is a significant religious/cultural venue.
The workmanship in the buildings is mmagnificent and well worth a photo stop on a nice day.

I only passed by, looking over the fence, but it looks very impressive. There were workers at their job, so I did not want to intrude. The designs are very colourful and intricate. The scale of the buildings impressive, too.
