This is a fantastic example of the history of the local area. Lots of wonderful artefacts on display, highlighting the religious, political & cultural life of the local area. Great displays of the Butler family & medieval religious art. I would recommend to friends. The tour guide, Sean, gave a great tour.

This place was breathtaking and the grounds are really taken care of. My cousins and I stopped here on a trip to Ireland bc our ancestors, the Butlers, built this place. If you are lucky enough to meet Mark, he is absolutely amazing. He told us so much information about our family tree, the Church and the area. Any question we asked him, he knew the answer and then some. What a wonderful, friendly, informative man to have working there. He greets you with this huge smile and treats you like family. This was the best stop on our tour across the country.

Un véritable bijou médiéval de l' Histoire irlandaise qui mérite vraiment le détour !

We had passed through Gowran many times but never stopped here. I had just seen a review on Tripadvisor and decided to organise a group spin on a fabulous, sunny Saturday. Admission was FREE and we even had a great tour guide from the OPW to show us around!! Great guide (unfortunately I didn't get his name). Very interesting history and well worth a visit.

Was passing through Gowran yesterday, noticed the stunning St Mary’s church, so dropped in for a wander.
To say this is a hidden gem is a real understatement. The place is fabulous and has history absolutely oozing from its walls.
While we were there we met Gerry from the OPW – he’s brilliant! He very kindly walked us through the history of the church and also of the surrounding area, going back to Neolithic times, through Roman (yes, Roman in Ireland !), to the founding of the church, the Templars, the associations with nearby Kilkenny Castle, Anne Boleyn, right down to modern (20th century) stained glass work. Absolutely brilliant, and a pleasure to listen to and learn from!

Lots of history here so worth a visit and a free tour to top it off. Well preserved stone carvings inside the 13th Century Church. Gerry the tour guide gives excellent speeches on every aspect of its history.

Myself and the family stopped off and explored the grounds of the church, there was a military talk on inside which had already started, we didn't want to disturb as we had three young boys with us. So we went around and admired the grounds, which is just amazing in itself. The boys loved exploring and we will be back again to view the inside

We stopped at Gowran for a sandwich and wandered across the street to the church where we met Gerry. He gave us his free and fascinating 1- hour tour. If we'd had longer, he could have easily given us more history and background. Gerry genuinely loves Ireland and the church. He makes the past seem like an adventure movie. We loved every second of his tour and will plan to take the next step into the past when we're back in Ireland again.

I stopped in Gowran as part of the east kilkenny cycle loop and my only regret was that I couldn't stay longer.
The free guided tour from erry was one of the best I had. He's incredibly passionate about the local history and currently writing a PhD on the matter. Very inspiring.
He gave context to the incredible Ogham stone I had struggled finding information on online and I left after a 1h30 tour with stars in my eyes and looking forard to heading home to research it more.
Cannot recommend enough - Thanks for the great experience !

Sembrano semplici rovine, ma Gerry (un ex dirigente IBM che ha deciso di seguire le sue passioni) vi spiegherà tante cose, tra cui perché in Irlanda ci sono così tanti ristoranti indiani. Merita un'oretta di sosta.
