My wife and myself are currently holidaying in Kaolack and earlier today we visited the Tsunami Memorial Park at Ban Nam Khem - one of the worst affected Thai Fishing communities by the 2004/Tsunami.
Although we narrowly missed the 2004 Tsunami (departing Phuket the week before!), and having been in Thailand for the first Anniversary, this was my first visit to Ban Nam Khem. Whilst it was good to see the Memorial Park, it was equally sad to see how many members of the local community are still suffering - in one way or another - from the after effects of the Tsunami!
Important, however, to see both the International Tsunami Museum (Home of the famous Patrol Boat 813 and see my subsequent Review) and the Bang Nam Khem Tsunami Memorial Park to get a better understanding of the scale of death and destruction that took place on Boxing Day 2004. Hopefully, something that won’t be repeated!

This was a very moving experience as we were there for the week of the 20th anniversary of the tsunami. Powerful display of artifacts found (looked a little like the display of items from the Titanic). You must see the short film about a survivor who returned to find the man who saved him.

Must-see visit that touched me a lot. How can we not forget this terrible disaster that has left hundreds of thousands of people dead on the coasts of Asia 😭
What courage and solidarity all these Asians had to rebuild everything.
To all these missing people, rest in peace in this eternal paradise 🙏 and a moving thought to all those who have lost theirs.

sad but beautiful area within walking distance from the hotel we stay, but easy to reach out with a local taxi.

A superb location that provides a reflective environment to honour those who perished in the disaster. Provides the right balance between the past and the future. Well worth a visit.

I didn't go into the museum, which required an admission fee.
I saw ships, paintings, and photographs in the free plaza.
Everything was carried away into the sea, and all that was left was wreckage.
So many people died, and I imagine rebuilding must have been difficult.
Looking at the town now, the roads are wide and well-maintained, and it seems like a nice place to live.
It was a place that made me feel the strength of life that can withstand natural disasters.

At the time, the events surrounding the tsunami moved me greatly, as I had assumed that people close to me were there. Thankfully, that was not the case - but it is still a depressing memorial

We thought it would be more and bigger.
This is an open place for everyone to visit. No entry or similar.
The site consists of a long memorial wall (wave) with the Germans who perished. It is a German company that is behind the site.
Then there is a huge golden Buddha.
Then there is no more, unfortunately.

Time gone. It is disturbing and thought-provoking to walk through here. It is no longer being repaired or maintained. All around it is a conical leisure and tourist meeting place, inappropriate.

Located about 20 km from Khao Lak, visiting the place brings back memories of one of Thailand's largest natural disasters, the 2004 Tsunami. At the same time, this memorial is one of the tourist attractions of the region. Here about a thousand people died tragically. The center of the Memorial is a fishing boat that was brought into the country from the sea. Watching over them, a golden Buddha sits there.

Sorry but can not remember the kilometers, Taxi took us and trip was less than 30 min drive from the resort.
