The Monsal trail station and cafe toilets . They are not cleaned filthy and a health hazard. After walking the dog we decided to have lunch. We used the restrooms which are adjacent to the cafe, and left without lunch. I will not go back to the cafe. and have been on holiday in Millersdale for a few years.

Spent a rainy bank holiday walking from Wyedale Car Park to Monsal Head pub. Really enjoyable day. One thing I did notice is lack of bins along the trail. Having to carry dog pooh bags for most of the walk isn't enjoyable but the place is notable clean.
Oh the biggest bug bear was the odd ignorant cyclist that didnt thank you for stopping your dog from walking whilst they passed. Manners are free.

Great day out…BUT BE AWARE!
Visiting area, cracking B&B, for first time we were so excited by what we saw as we drove in. Followed advice from friends who told us about good and free parking. We had a great walk on the trail, did 8 miles, so many birds and flowers and views to die for. We got back to our car to find a parking fine , turns out the road to Litton Mill is a CLEARWAY, we checked and too late we saw signs.
Spoiled our day but after phone call today…no chance of a let off.
Told to park at the old railway station and lady said “surely you could see the road is narrow”.
We will be back next Spring but may try to find a bus from our superb B&B.

Fabulous trail made even better by a sweet treat from Blackwell Bakes. Delicious brownies with a beautiful view. Definitely worth a visit if passing!

Highly recommend parking at Millers Dale station if wanting to do the stepping stones in Chee Dale as the parking for the Wye Dale car park at the Buxton end is extremely limited. The access to the stepping stones is much easier and less dangerous ( especially with children ) when walking from Millers Dale station.

The Monsal Trail is a lovely, very gentle countryside walk along an abandoned local rail line near Bakewell in the Peak District.
It allows one to get a nice feel for the countryside of the area but on a less strenuous trail than much of what is available in the area. It does lack the more rewarding or challenging aspects of some hikes, but the easy access is convenient, while the walk along an old rail line gives a different perspective.
It goes by old former rail stations, under bridges, through tunnels, and across viaducts with views. Many stations and other places along the trail have car parks, allowing easy access. Some of the spots along the walk have cafes or places to eat, shops, toilets, etc.
The view from the viaduct at the Monsal Dale is nice.
We parked at the old Bakewell train station and started from there, walking north to go across Monsal Dale and back, an easy but enjoyable walk.

Nice pubs with staggering views at the head of the valley. outstanding countryside, extremely verdant. A nice long walk on well made and maintained paths, in outstanding countryside.

Started at Bakewell Station which was fine but I think we should of started from Hassop Station which would of saved our legs a bit. Walked about two miles before we got to the first tunnel which was very long about 400 metres, there isn’t much to see before the tunnels but we enjoyed the walk, it’s very flat and safe for walkers joggers and cyclists it was very quite the day we went and didn’t see hardly anybody

Not the most exhilarating of walks with only the tunnels and viaduct of any real optical interest. The actual length of the walk according to the guides are somewhat underestimated which didn’t help as one of our party became immobilised and we had to call a cab to get back to our start point in bakewell. Oh, and it rained 🫢

What more can you ask for, a beautiful day and a fantastic cycling trail.
I was nervous to start with as its been many years since I cycled. The trail suited my "novice" status as its flat, i loved the many tunnels and the views really were fabulous.
We hired from Hassop Bike Hire and had no complaints with the process.
We didn't eat at the cafe, the menu was varied, but we had plans in place to eat in Bakewell.
Would highly recommend the trail.

Can you access monsal trail near cressbrook? And is it easy access no steep inclines?
. We are staying at cressbrook and didn't want to drive to Hassop if we can access from our cottage/cresbrook

Yes you can, by the farm below Monsal Head off bottomhill road. Go over the bridge up a reasonably steep incline. Everything is accessible from Cresbrook, within walking distance. Beautiful walk along the river access through the Mill. Hope that helps.

We are staying in Tideswell and want to cycle to get onto Monsal Trail. Is there a safer route than using the main road?

Hi LoffO,
I believe, after extensive research, that the best and safest route for you would be to wait for low tide (check the up-to-date local timetable in the Titeswell library) and then you should be able to carry your bicyclets above your heads. The water will not be above calf height during low tide (check with local farmers regarding the height of the local calves though). Hope this helps.

Can you do the 8.5 miles there and back in one day as would be parking the car at the start point or is there a circular route? We would be walking.

There is the TP3 bus which is a short walk from each end so you can park one end, walk and get the bus back. Bus also connects with Matlock railway station so you can do it all by public transport

Hi - the online map is OK I think. There are toilets at Hassop Station (bike hire here) and at Millers Dale station a bit over half way along. There are some too at Monsal Head but you have to leave the trail and go up a fairly steep path. Toilets in Bakewell too.
