An ‘average’ rating seems a bit harsh for this, but it’s not really worthy of a ‘very good’ rating. I live near a lovely little woods in Derbyshire so perhaps I’ve been spoilt! This is a walk for the fit and able and those not afraid of heights or suffering with vertigo! It would be extremely treacherous after a few days of rain. The ruins are a bit lame, the fountain at the fountain pond sadly wasn’t working, despite 3 of us trying our best for 15/20 minutes to get it going.

So glad we visited this little gem on our recent trip to Rippon. It is not an easy walk, quite difficult in parts to be honest but worth it.

This is one of the loveliest walks i have ever done!! Lots of paths to walk down and lovely visits en route. Very picturesque!! Loved the viewing spots. We visited whilst on holiday, would love to return.

We enjoyed our walk around Hackfall, but would have helped with more signposts. Most people we spoke to were struggling too, especially to get back to the cat park.

Small car park then you need to walk down the field into the woods.
Managed by Woodland Trust, information sheet in car park.
Plenty of paths to explore, some are steep and scan be slippy.
Pretty river at the bottom.
No charge for entry or car park..

Great little find hidden in The Dales! Walks for all ages and ability! Dogs can off lead in the woods area and have a Paddle in the river! Lovely trails and nice features along the way!

Went here for my first visit with one of my 14 year old and 2 dogs it was a absolute gorgeous walk beautiful views and to my surprise lots of old building dotted around ,I will say its a very tough walk in the winter but we'll worth it , on a bad note be careful with your dogs as on my visit I had 2 close calls with aggressive dogs not on leads which really annoys me

We did two different walks through Hackfall in our week away . Wonderful woodland with the added interest of a river walk and the various follies in different places . Instills a sense of peace and calm from being surrounded by nature .
Can see why Turner went there to paint 200 years ago and I love David Stead’s more recent Hackfall Wood paintings on display in his Ripon Gallery .

Had a lovely few hours wandering around. Excellent views of follies. It was really quiet and peaceful. Week Worth a visit!

How disabled friendly is this area please

It's not disabled friendly. There are really steep parts and the ground is uneven and paths narrow. You may manage bits with sticks if you go steady. Sorry for the late reply.

Yes the paths are ok but quite steep in places, so maybe not ideal for a pushchair. No problem with your dog running free.

How long has the fountain been dis functional? A notice to prevent visitors waiting ages would be very helpful.

The fountain works on a gravity feed system and works fine if lots of rain in the area, I was running there about two weeks ago and it was working fine. Sometimes it does not go off but this is just how it is and it is best to come back another time.
