We arrived after lunch so we saw the house first as that closes at 4pm. Garden closes at 5pm but grounds don't close till 7pm. The house is interesting and well presented. Upstairs is a costume museum focussing on the history of sports clothes.
Gardens are pleasant with lovely views. Worth seeing the bear house. The ice house is harder to find, but also interesting. Enjoyed a longer walk up the hill, plenty of benches at the top of the garden, and a gate out to the wider park. Lots of redwood trees at the top of the garden. Well worth a visit.

Thank you for such a glowing review, Flondy. I'm delighted to hear how you enjoyed your visit and you we able to explore so much of the house and gardens. A new exhibition will reopen in February and showcase more pieces from the fashion collection, so I do hope you will be able to visit again.

Very good visit to Killerton. Pleasant staff in the ticket office giving information for those visitors like ourselves who haven’t visited this property before.
On entering the house we were greeted by a volunteer who together with his colleague was giving an excellent overview of the history of the house and family and summarising the key points. Other volunteers around the property were available to answer further questions about rooms and contents and we took full advantage of this service. The costume gallery was very interesting to my wife.
The formal garden is small but well laid out with interesting planting. We didn’t use the cafe and shop so can’t comment on these but we have used many other N/T property cafe’s and shops.

We really enjoyed this national trust property. Plenty to see and do and the volunteers were helpful. We played Frisbee golf and enjoyed the surroundings and great start to our week in Devon. Two cafes. The one at the entrance has cheaper pasties and sausage rolls.

Visited last week on the start of my holiday down to cornwall. Weather was a bit hit and miss but stayed dry enough for myself & mum to walk down to the house & back. Lovely stroll down to the house with vast acres of land, although the path down & back to the house was quite gritty and if not in the right shoes like i was, you get grit in your shoes!

Very informative volunteers in the house and upon entering told us a bit about the house and when the national trust too it over and restored some of the property, you can explore in mostly all the rooms, ground floor & upstairs.
Explored the gardens as well, and they were very well ordered, but needed a few more signs to let you know what plants they were.

Shop was quite big but didn't purchase anything from there.

Cafe we had a cup of tea in and was reasonably priced, but a quick note to let you know that tea goes cold quick due to little cups.

Overall a really good couple of hours stop....

On arrival the staff were very helpful at the entrance to Killerton house and gardens. Walking into the house the two ladies were full of lots of information about the house which was amazing the house was fascinating the gardens and grounds were amazing. Lots of things to do for people with young children. When going to the cafe there was quite a few spaces inside to set and one table outside we decided we wanted to sit outside making the most of the nice weather. The cafe wasn’t busy the only down side to the day was the table that we sat at had three trays full of dirty cups and saucers and rubbish on them which wasn’t very appealing. Overall though the day was fantastic would recommend going there.

Hello juwweibaker Thank you for visiting Killerton and taking the time to review. I'm so pleased to hear that you received such a warm welcome from our staff and volunteers and that you had a fantastic day with us. Sorry to hear that the table in the café wasn't clear for your arrival. It sounds as though it has been previously busy for crockery to have mounted up in that way, but I do hope that the staff rectified this immediately as soon as they were aware of it. Thank you for recommending us and we do hope to welcome you back to Killerton again in the near future.

We had a lovely day out at Killerton, despite it being a 30 degree day! Plenty of shady spots to get to away from the son. We had 2 children and a dog with us (we were on holiday hence the dog needing to come despite it being a hot day!) and had lots of fun with the frisbee golf and other games that were out at the minute, we took it in turns to look around the house, there was a volunteer there playing the organ and piano, he was such a lovely man and invited my 9 year old to join him and showed her how to play a few notes, they played a song together with his guidance.

We also went for a wander around the grounds, got slightly lost, tried to find the play area, didn't manage it. The map we were given didn't have it marked and wasn't the best really for those who don't know the area. But other than that, it was a great day out and the only cost for us was lunch as we are NT members.

Good morning, Joanne Thanks for taking the time to review your visit to Killerton and I'm delighted to hear that you enjoyed your time with us. Our volunteers certainly bring the special places to life and I will pass on your lovely praise to the house pianist. I'm sure he will have enjoyed their duet just as much as your daughter! I appreciate your feedback on the map and play area. The main spot is the playground by visitor reception so I will have a look to see how the map can be improved so it can be found easily. I hope you all had a great holiday and we hope to welcome you back to Killerton again soon.

Came to see the fashion on the second floor and the whole of the second floor shut. Drove over a hour for nothing. Downstairs is only a few rooms and not worth the visit

Hello Joel Thank you for your review. I'm sorry that you felt disappointed with your visit to Killerton and were unable to see the fashion exhibition. Unfortunately I cannot tell from your review the date or time of your visit, but the fashion collection on first floor of the house has been open daily since the exhibition opened in February. My only insight would be that if a visitor arrived at the last entry time they perhaps would not have time to fully visit the ground floor and the first floor of the house before closing time at 4pm. Without knowing more details I cannot explain the reason why you were unable to go upstairs. If you would like to contact me so that I can understand further and look into this, please email: killerton@nationaltrust.org.uk

We stopped here for a break on route to Cornwall. My wife is a NT member, I am not. We were particularly attracted by the ' dog friendly' claims.

First surprise was that there was a pay and display car park( I think £2). We didn't have to pay due to my wife's membershiip but thought this was very odd. ( is it a new NT policy?). Even if the idea is to stop people just stopping for a rest, surely they should refund any paying visitors? Ridiculous idea to charge people extra to visit your attraction.

My entrance fee was £13 ( having declined the initial invitation to pay £14.30 for ' gift aid admission') whether or not I wanted to visit the house or formal gardens. There was no ' grounds only ' fee available, which didn't seem right for a property claiming to be dog friendly and then excluding the dog not only from the house( as normal) but also the ' formal gardens'. We don't know if this is a new NT policy or simply a decision by this property not to allow dogs on leads in the gardens. My wife had a quick look at the gardens and said they looked rather ordinary and she couldn't see why dogs on leads would be excluded.

So, we were restricted to the general surrounding grounds/trails and , having been told at the entrance how very dog friendly they were, we were given a very poor map of the various trails around the property. These trails had no discernable scale or idea of length/difficulty, no colour coding( apart from dog allowed/not allowed areas) and there were no trail signposts on the routes. We got pretty hopelessly lost on what was a very hot day .We only met 2 other couples and both were equally lost, one also with a dog and 2 young children. We were ' rescued ' by a local who was doing the ' fun run' route and he kindly walked us back to the house. He remarked that he would have struggled to explain the right way back to us. When we finally got back, the young family had also just arrived and said they had turned back and gone another way.

The other annoyance was that most of the ' dog friendly' trails which can be used are actually open to the general public anyway and the gated off Killerton House bits really didn't contain anything of great interest at all. Thankfully the cows in some of the fields didn't add to our problems by blocking our way.

We were totally shattered when we got back and it was just as well we were carrying water etc , mainly for our dog, as we were out for twice as long as intended.

So, beware if you think this is a dog friendly property - it really isn't. If you aren't a member they charge you full rate to walk around mainly public paths without any designated trails or signs. You cannot walk around the house gardens for an hour or so.

Hello W714, thank you for your review I’m sorry to hear that you were disappointed with your visit to Killerton. In response to your feedback, I will try to address the points you have raised: Car parking charges are not a new thing - machines are installed at the majority of National Trust places and have been in situ for a few years now (since 2017 at Killerton). The car parking is free for members, and there is a charge of £2 for 2 hours and £4 for all day for non-members. The car park is used by visitors coming to the main site but also by those accessing the public footpath to Columnjohn or the cycle path to Broadclyst, for example. We have plenty of parkland where dogs can walk on a lead, areas where they can run off the lead, water bowls at key places around the stable block and house, tethering posts, and a hose available to wash muddy paws. The Stables Coffee Shop also welcomes dogs. With all this considered, we feel that Killerton is dog friendly. It's only a small proportion of the estate, the house, garden and chapel grounds, that are only suitable for registered assistance dogs. This is primarily because of the historic nature and conservation of these areas, but also so we have some parts of the estate that are dog free zones. Not everyone likes dogs and so we try to accommodate all of our visitors. Each National Trust property has their own policy on dogs and being dog friendly does not mean that dogs are allowed in all areas. The grey visitor map that is offered at visitor reception gives a general overview of the site with the gardens and parkland and doesn’t contain any marked trails or walks. I am really sorry that you were not directed to our downloadable walks on our website and I will speak with the Visitor Reception team to ensure that all visitors are given this option. Our website has many walks that explore the parkland and would help you find your way. There are at least 6 walks that are specifically for dogs. As we have so many walking routes available (and many of which cross other walks), to colour code or waymark all of these routes would then spoil the landscape that our visitors want to enjoy. Killerton is a working estate so there is usually livestock in the fields - I’m pleased to hear that the cows didn’t spoil your day. As I'm sure you are aware, the National Trust is a charity that depends on membership and ticket prices to raise the money required to care for the 6500 acres of the Killerton estate and all the buildings, chapels and countryside in its care. The admission fees cover entrance and access to the house, fashion collection, restaurant, garden, chapel, wider parkland and Iron Age hill fort. The most cost-effective way to visit would have been to add yourself to your wife’s membership. Alternatively, Danes Wood and Ashclyst Forest (which are both a short walk/drive from the main site) are free to walk around, so I am sorry that the welcome team did not suggest these options to you. I will take your feedback on board and I do hope that you will visit Killerton again, so that next time you will be able to enjoy your dog walk fully.

Out of the many National Trust properties we visited on our recent holiday in Devon, have to be totally honest and say this property was the one we would not bother returning back to visit.
The rooms on ground floor are nice, and are based on the 1920s/1930s. Unfortunately the upstairs bedrooms etc have been taken out and replaced by displays of sporting clothes. Whilst we were there, people were just walking through these quickly to get back out again. Personally found the entire first floor to be a complete waste of space and time.
The small building in the garden known as the Bear house was interesting.
If your on a short visit to Devon and looking to see which National Trust properties to visit, then personally, I would say this one would not be on my list of must see properties.

Hello Paul, thanks for sharing your view. I'm sorry to hear that Killerton did not meet your expectations. I was interested to hear that you thought there would be bedrooms to see as we always make this clear on all of our promotional information. To help you understand why we have the fashion exhibition upstairs on the first floor instead of bedrooms , I need to give you a brief outline of the history of the house in the 20th Century, which equally has it's own merit. Although the Killerton Estate came to the Trust in 1944, the house did not open to the public until 1978. In 1944 the house was cleared out and furniture put into store in Exeter to make way for two evacuated schools, Vinehall and Battle Abbey and some of the Acland family's original furniture was destroyed in the Exeter blitz. Post-war the house was used firstly as a hotel for the Worker's Travel Association and then as a hall of residence for St Luke's College of Education from 1962 to 1977. When the Trust decided to open the house in 1978 there was little furniture and we had no pictures to show what the bedrooms looked like. So when Killerton was offered the Paulise de Bush costume exhibition, it was an ideal opportunity to use the upstairs of the house for the costume displays. Since then we have always had a themed fashion exhibition on display. We're aware that fashion does not appeal to everyone, but it does bring a significant numbers of visitors to Killerton, and the fashion exhibition offers a different dimension to the property's history. To avoid any disappointment in the future; the National Trust website can link you to pages of properties in your chosen area where you can read about the history of the place, and what each property has on offer before your visit. I hope you had a lovely time on holiday in Devon.

Another interesting visit, although these premises didn’t really give us a wow factor we’ve had elsewhere. Pleasant grounds affording some decent walks, nicely maintained gardens. The upstairs exhibition of costumes didn’t really do it for me but that’s not to say others wouldn’t enjoy it.

Hello pedalrog2018 Thanks for taking the time to review your visit to Killerton. I'm glad you enjoyed your walks on the estate and I hope the weather was kind to make the most of the stunning views in the parkland. Thanks for your feedback. We're aware that fashion does not appeal to everyone but it does bring a significant numbers of visitors to Killerton, and the fashion exhibition offers a different dimension to the property's history. The exhibition changes annually, so perhaps on your next visit you may see something that ignites your interest. We hope to welcome you back to Killerton again soon.
