Parochial Church in Abtshagen

Abtshagen, is small village in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern province in north-east Germany located halfway between Grimmen and Stralsund. Cut in half by road number 194 leading to the north, village is hiding within its precinct a small gem, namely, Gothic Parochial Church dedicated to Holy Spirit (Heilgeistkirche = Holy Spirit's Church). Surrounded by small cemetery, and well visible from the road that is just passing by, red-brick church was completed in 1380. Massive, brick tower, that was planned to built; which is indicated by remnants of the wall; has never been finished. Instead of it, wooden bell tower was added to the structure of the church in 1667. However, original tower has not survived as it's been destroyed by arson in 1999 and then, rebuilt in year 2000. Church's simple, neo-gothic, interior is well preserved. Within his walls, bearing remains of old Medieval and Baroque paintings, medieval baptismal font can be found, and one of the very few preserved organs made by Carl August Buchholz, famous organ builder from Berlin. A simple 18th century epitaph of pastor Martin Partenius can also be seen in church. Renaissance preacher's stall, that is still there, was made around 1650. Original, Gothic, altar piece was replaced by Renaissance one, which is no longer there. I had a chance to look around church's interior thanks to the courtesy of the verger, who spotted me wandering around the church with photo camera and opened it for me. We had a little chat, and I'd learned some historical facts about the church from him. That was very kind of him. What a charming place, with serene atmosphere. Definitely worth stopping there.
