We arrived at just past 3 and were told at the entrance that we must rush hurry to the house if we were to see round, as last entry was 3.30. As two of our party were over 75 and distances are fairly long, this was not possible. So we had o miss the toy museum and house and paid a total of over £50 for 3 adults and 2 children to see the gardens only. It was extremely disappointing. Some other reviewers have said these historic Elizabethan gardens were "past their best" in August and we could definitely agree with that. A lot of the garden was long stretches of grass and clipped hedges of various sizes, and the hedges were at least nearly clipped. But apart from the grass and hedges, attractive planting was not in evidence for us. I attach pictures of shrivelled up bushes, , a rose trellis with almost no blooms and a photo of the famous "union jack" red white and blue garden which was by now dying and very sparse, and areas of dead wild flowers in puzzling locations which presumably looked different when they weren't dead. . At one point we came across an ancient cottage could have been pleasant if it had not appeared semi derelict with ragged dirty curtains at the windows and some sort of plastic tubing poking out. All around us, nearly everything seemed "past its prime." And yes, I do understand that using historic plant varieties and maintaining a rigid historic garden layout can be very limiting, but if nobody here can do anything to create a better impression for visitors in what is, after all, August, the summer holidays, then reducing the price radically for gardens-only visits at this time of year would certainly seem appropriate. Gazing at so very many hundreds of dead and dying plants, even in herbaceous borders we felt much more should have been done. It would have no doubt been better value if the house had been open, but that was no consolation, and we felt absolutely ripped off paying over fifty quid to see this. The only bright spot was that the kids liked the adventure play area behind the cafe - although even here, little attempt had been made to landscape this space for the benefit of parents sitting and watching. Sorry for such a negative review, but I'm sad to say that we feel we paid a dreadfully high price for an experience we would not recommend to anyone.

Thank you for taking the time to review your visit with us. We would like to respond to your comments as succinctly as we can and address the concerns raised:
1. The House is open between 11.30am and 4.00pm with last entry at 3.30pm. It is possible our staff were trying to advise that in order to wander through the House at a leisurely pace, heading there first would be recommended. We apologise if this instead came across as if you would need to rush there and rush through. The Toy Museum does not require you to upgrade to a House ticket and you would have been granted entry with your Gardens and Grounds ticket.
2. August is the natural end of our summer display, and the herbaceous borders do begin to die back at this time of year. We regularly receive high compliments regarding the Gardens and our careful management of their organic high and low season. We balance maintaining a formal display with the overall health of the grounds and this does sometimes mean leaving grasses long. The Union Flag Garden is undergoing renovation at the moment, as we mention in our Head Gardener’s Notes which can be found throughout the Gardens and on our website. Another of your images appears to be of the Peony Border which would not be in flower at this time of year.
3. The cottage to which you refer is lived in and cared for as a rented property. Our tenants have a right to make the property their home and we believe the tubing you saw was for an air conditioning unit, which is within the confines of what our tenants are permitted to use in their properties.
Whilst we don’t necessarily agree with your criticism of our Gardens and Grounds, we are sorry to read you did not feel we were value for money or that you had to rush your visit. We hope we can welcome you for a renewed visit in the 2025 season.

Beautiful vast gardens, although they are coming to the end of the season, I can only imagine they are even better in the spring.
The house is still partially lived in so you can only see certain rooms. There is a lot of history in the house and staff on hand to explain facts about the rooms/ hall.
Tea room was pleasant but I would not recommend the hot chocolate, served in a messy dipping cup. Muffin was good. Staff are young and need some guidance, sticking to one order at an end would ensure people are not forgotten and wait ages.
Free visit with historic houses. Parking also free.

Beautiful garden, and incredible history.. You’re allowed to take photos and the staff are super friendly and knowledgeable. All very enjoyable and a very reasonable ticket price at £15.

Penshurst was really wonderful. Something for everyone. History buffs, garden lovers and kids- I remembered the advdnture playground very fondly from my childhood and was delighted to see it still there 40 years later! The gardens and house are really well maintained, I was really surprised by a recent reviewer not feeling the same (and I really noticed the favourable difference compared with nearby National Trust property Ightam Mote). The staff we met were all courteous and informative without being intrusive.
We all felt that we'd had a lovely day out and that it was value for money (which cannot be said for all of the similar venues in the Kent-Sussex area. Recommended.

Really lovely day, super gardens and interesting house full of history. Lots to do. The only downside was the cafe. Very slow service, cycling clubs taking up all the tables. Huge queues. Should be a separate area for those just wanting a hot takeaway drink, ordering 9 drinks and then sitting at huge tables for an hour so no one else can sit down.

I was so disappointed in this place. It looks so lovely on the website, but once you’re there in person rather than having a drone’s eye view, you realise that the maintaining of high yew hedges around every section of the gardens means you get no views of the gardens from anywhere; you just trot from box to box, and the signage is so poor that you end up going round in circles (and no, I wasn’t in the maze at the time!). To be frank, I ended up suspecting that it’s cunningly designed so that the family who still live there get the money from hoi polloi without actually having to clap eyes on them. Famous people from history lived here - the Sidneys, for heaven’s sake! - but you’ll learn nothing about them from the signage, which is utterly uninformative. Speaking of signage, I lost patience completely when seeing that at every opportunity, Anne Boleyn’s name was misspelled as Ann. I felt patronised, despised and taken advantage of. The property itself is pretty. Look at a photo on line, then go to Hever Castle instead and find out how opening your property to the public should be done.

Dear Shemag, thank you for taking the time to leave a review for Penshurst Place and Gardens. We’re sorry to read that you weren’t able to enjoy a drone’s eye view of the gardens during your visit, indeed none of us are. The “box to box” structure to which you refer, is very much intentional – Penshurst Place and Gardens are one of few walled gardens in Kent, and our 1 mile of yew hedging within the formal gardens, planted in the 19th Century, was intended to divide the gardens into rooms, with each displaying its own beautiful and unique style, layout and colour. A rather different intention than “getting the money from hoi polloi without actually having to clap eyes on them”, perhaps you might agree.
Penshurst Place has been the family home of the Sidneys for nearly 500 years, and has welcomed families to enjoy and share in its beauty since the 1940s. Information on the history of the house, gardens and family are widely available in the garden tower, information panels, in the house itself, and even in the guide book. It is a shame that you appear to have missed all of these opportunities.
The overwhelming feedback we receive shows that our visitors make Penshurst Place a part of their own history and it is a privilege to continue to be such a special place for so many of them.
I do hope we can welcome you back in the future, though we should warn you that the walled garden design and yew hedging will still be in place.

Lovely sunny day. Plenty of good parking near to the entrance.
Entrance fee I felt was reasonable compared to somewhere like Alnwick Castle and garden which I thought was excessive.
The house was impressive and the guides were pleasant and helpful.
The star of the show was the gardens - lovely.

Excellent gardens and house. Well worth joining the Head Gardeners tour. So informative and informal. Terrific insight to his job. Every garden 'room' is an experience. The house is also so interesting and the addition of the small Toy Museum a bonus. Like so many properties of the landed gentry this also parades it's past and wealth. There is a slight difference here in that the family still live here and share their past and property with the public. The whole place has an informal feel and it is comfortable to walk around.
There are several large photgraphs of varios TV & fim production thta have taken place here including Wolf Hall, but sadly these have not been presnted well and are curling with the atmosphere and should be either better mounted and/or printed to acetate or acrylic sheets.
The Porcupine Cafe is also very good BUT canaot cope with large numbers effectively. There should be a 'fast lane' for those just want cans/bottled drinks so not haveing to queue with those wanting coffees and meals. This can be easily achieved by moving the till down the counter and away from the coffee order point. The current set up probably works for 90% of the time but when it is a special day or weekend opening then they need to accomodate numeber better.
We went on a special weekend and there was a 50% deal on plants bought from the shop-such good value.
This is an excllent venue to visit and so well priced compared to NT and other properties around.

You don't have to book on line its best not to as the weather could be wet there is plenty of parking all free you can walk forever here you can walk to Tonbride from penshurst through a lovely woodland walk takes about 45 mins well worth it !it goes to hays den country park which is really nice dogs allowed too dogs are not allowed in penshurst place but are allowed in the fields and grounds

What is the best way to get to Penshurst Place from Leigh Station?

Hi, I do believe there is a bus from Leigh but cant tell you what number or how often. But I would think a taxi would be the best option if they have taxi's at Leigh station. Hope this is of some help.

My sister isn’t very mobile following a fall and is using a wheeled walker. She can manage a few stairs, if they aren’t too steep. I’m wondering how much of Penshurst Place would be accessible for her?

The grounds are quite flat - eg the Knot Garden - and the Great Hall is accessible after a few steps up. Upstairs apartments would not be good for someone with mobility problems.

Hi Krisyyy, we're afraid the Peonies have a famously short bloom and are no longer in flower. If you visit our website you can add your name and email address to our alert list and we can let you know ahead of time in 2019 when we expect them to bloom.

There are indeed. We have a self-service restaurant with hot and cold meals, cakes, sandwiches and drinks, as well as a coffee shop at our visitor entrance. Toilets are both at the visitor entrance and the top of the gardens.

How big is the Toy museum? Is it worth organising a school trip here or is the museum too small?

If you are thinking of making the visit with a school group purely for the toy museum, I'd say absolutely, definitely not! It's a lovely little museum but is very small, and I simply can't imagine a group of children fitting in easily, even if you split a class up into very small groups, nor can I imagine their attention being held for more than a few minutes. The toys are in glass cases and the information about them is in a booklet that the lady on the desk gives you. I've popped into it a few times with my children on our visits there on the past few years (they are currently Y8 and Y6!) and although they are sensible and curious children and like to have a look, I can't say that we have ever spent longer than ten to fifteen minutes in there.
However, Penshurst as a whole could be a good school trip, depending on the age you are thinking about, as the house might be good from a historical point of view for older children (KS2), the gardens are nice for a runabout, and best of all there is a fantastic adventure playground - but that's very big and all on grass so best left for the summer!
