The Carmelite order bought the site in the 1950s after having lost it to Henry VIII in the 1550s and what's remarkable is how well the modern buildings fit with the ancient.
My room was simple but clean, comfortable and well presented, and the shared bathroom and shared shower-room were also in good condition and clean. Those facilities are from an older era - don't expect power showers and fancy bathrooms in this 800 year old building, but the purpose of pilgrimage is not to luxuriate in the comforts of the 21st century.
I was able to attend the evening service which was a worthwhile experience, and then walked in the gardens until sunset.
Breakfast is served in the Pilgrim's Hall and there was toast with butter and jam and a cooked breakfast served by the staff. This was very good quality and I found all the staff that I met throughout my visit to be friendly and helpful.
The Friars is not expensive to stay at and the room and food reflect that, so if you are looking for a luxury break this is not for you. If you're looking for a peaceful, calming place to rest it is well worth visiting and staying over.

The food was good value, but the service from the grumpy individual who took my payment was just awful. She also advised that there would be a long wait of between 20 to 30 minutes for our food. It was a very unpleasant experience so we won't be eating in the Pilgrims' Hall again.

A lovely afternoon with Mum for her Birthday. Very pretty surroundings and if you are religious very spiritual. I am not but still enjoyed our visit. I wish more information was available about the history of the Friars as you walk around but we did find a board in the dining room that gave a brief overview. A nice place to contemplate life and good weather helped! The tearoom was not worth a visit sadly, food good, staff rude. If that doesn’t bother you pull up a chair

My Sister and I went to the Ayleford Summer Fayre on Sunday 23rd June 2024 as we are both Catholics and like to support it. However on this occasion we were extremely disappointed with the rudeness and sarcasm of one of the Friars - a grey haired man who looked in his seventies. My Sister asked him a perfectly relevant question as to whether he was a Brother or a Friar as she wanted to go to confession but was met with a curt reply. This was not the first time this had happened. I think the clergy should be mindful that visitors to such events - whether Christian or not are subsidising their lifestyle and should treat them with respect. As a result of this we have decided never to go there again for religious reasons and only to attend for car shows and the like.

This place has always held a special spot in my heart as I used to come here as a child. It is lovely for anyone to visit, with someone or alone, as there are plenty of areas to sit and think. The pond is normally inhabited with geese and black swans, which I find fascinating. During the year the field hosts different events which can be found online and there are plenty of toilets here. The cafe is great, it has an oldie feel to it and is reasonably priced for the food you get. The prayer rooms are lovely, with their stain glass windows and for a small donation you can light candles also. The peace garden is worth a look as it has different languages for the word ‘peace’ on the floor which I think is a lovely touch. All in all a lovely place to ponder.

Absolutely stunning place, I went on a whim and was not disappointed, incredibly quiet and tranquil which was wonderful, the peace garden gives out vibes of just that, peace, to me, it was pure joy. I have to say this is not a place for kids as it is not a park, so those of you thinking of visiting with kids, simply don't, this is a place for adults to enjoy some fantastic history and peace and quiet, a place for prayer and reflection for those seeking a bit more of a spiritual path. The coffeehouse itself is a magnificent building and the coffee quite good, there's free parking, although a donation of £2 is encouraged which is fair, the toilets were very clean and the whole place was very well kept. Around the corner you can stroll around Aylesbury and find a beautiful place full of history and gorgeous buildings, I cannot recommend this place enough, a day well spent.

We wanted to stay somewhere peaceful and having visited The Friars over many years decided on an overnight stay here. It was wonderful! We stayed in two rooms in the old block and both were extremely comfortable, simple and very peaceful. Leaving was difficult. We took our meals in the Pilgrims' Hall - two lunches and a breakfast and all were thoroughly enjoyable with lovely staff. A special mention for Michelle's apple pie - it was delicious, the pastry heavenly! Apparently her mother Dora's recipe and now a Friar's secret. The Pottery was a special treat with very talented potters - a long story here because I discovered that Bill, the potter, had produced some of my cherished articles when he worked in London many years ago.
Thank you to all at the Friars for making our stay so enjoyable - Mark, Alifia, Wendy, Louise, Michelle and all in the Pottery. 7

Great place. Had a wonderful long weekend Buddhist retreat here, some stayed in the rooms and others joined as day visitors. Food in the restaurant was fabulous, service friendly throughout wherever we were on site. I have visited several times to meet friends over the past 7 years and it is always lovely, peaceful, clean and well worth a visit.

Whilst the priory itself is nice to walk around we were very disappointed by the restaurant and tea room . Restaurant full to capacity from a conference and tea room at 12.30 run out of almost anything you’d expect for lunch

My Daughters visiting us decide to go Midnight Mass on Christmas Eve.when they arrived around 11.30 ish they were greeted by locked gates and a couple who were locked in, they asked the couple if anyone was coming to let them out, too which they said yes, so my daughters stood talking to the couple so they didn't feel alone.Along comes this very rude priest who stated people have to get up early and told the couple to hurry up,apparently the haven't had a service since 2019 because they don't have time and it's too much trouble too not very accommodating for the Carmalites I must say,maybe the need to look at who is representing them ? also checking the site when closing the gate, which apparently should of been closed at 5.30 but wasnt, thats why the couple were locked in maybe a bigger sign might help.

Can anyone come and light a candle for a loved one? And if so where do you go to do this?

Yes of course, all are welcome. Candles can be found in the various chapels and are £3.00 each. There are donation boxes for you to put your money in. The chapels are locked at 5pm each day.

No you can't, simple as that.
However, they do have a lovely North Barn that you can hire out for a Reception. Contact them directly for prices and details. It is very good value
