Even in fog so thick we couldn't see the interpretive centre or lighthouse until we were right up close, we could still see the birds on bird rock. The Gannets are pretty cool. The interpreter was super kind and the small indoor museum was really well done. Free to enter, we left a donation.

What a fabulous experience! The gannets, murres, kittiwakes, etc are so close that pictures are a photographer's dream! Chris, at the desk, is very friendly and knowledgeable! We would definitely recommend this place for the amateur and most experienced bird watchers!

This is definitely a must see while in eastern Newfoundland. The staff at the Interpretation Centre were excellent and despite the foggy weather, encouraged us to take the hike out to Bird Rock. Amazing view....and the sounds of so many birds. Wow! The Interpretation centre is also worth visiting as is the Lighthouse. And it's free!

Can be foggy but if you’re lucky and it lifts go around and behind the Lighthouse, spectacular vista. Well worth the drive in, which in itself is very scenic and a wonderful excursion from St. John’s.

Everyone should go here at least once in their lifetime! It's a bit out of the way and the terrain is more treeless and flat than other parts of Newfoundland. It's very foggy but you will see the birds. It is an untouched area without fences, etc. It is free to visit and there are no cash grabs in the information centre, which is actually surprising because I feel there could be more art, souvenirs, etc. to make money from tourists. Once you get out the the bird rock area your senses will be amazed!

It is about a 45-minute walk from the parking area to watch the seabirds. It is a phenomenal experience to see so many seabirds in one area. I would recommend to leave the cape way before sunset, although the sunset was so gorgeous on the Atlantic Ocean with the lighthouse on the cape. We almost hit a moose on country highway driving back to St. John's at night.

Don't be put off by the fog. We arrived in a fog so thick we couldn't see the building from the parking lot. As we walked out to the viewing area, the fog slowly lifted until there was sparkling sunshine. An absolute highlight of our trip. I would have spent more time there if I could.

Cape St. Mary is a bit out of the way but certainly worth it. The road to get there was a little rough sometimes but very picturesque. There is a small hike on rough ground to get to Bird Rock but I was able to make it even though I am out of shape with bad knees. Using a walking stick would have been helpful for me. The bird nesting area was amazing and you are so close to them. You can experience the noise and the smell (yes, the smell) but it is all part of the area's fantastic eco system. The scenery is beautiful but not a place for young children on the high cliffs. The Visitor Centre is informative and well maintained. The staff was super friendly and helpful. If you love nature, you need to experience this site.

Anyone been there in mid-September? Are there still birds to see at that time of year?

September is a great time to visit because we actually get the best of our weather in August & September. The thick July fog is usually gone when September rolls around.
Hi, Does one need a reservation or is there anything we need to sign up for in advance? what time of year were you there? Thanks

Cape St Mary's is open to the public. No reservation required. There is a visitor's center with hours, but you can walk the path to see the birds without going to the visitor center. We were there in July, but I think anytime from June thru August would be a good time to go. See thousands of Northern Gannets fairly close, but a good zoom lens makes for better pics.

Reading about potholes on the road from St. John's to Cape St. Mary's Ecological Reserve. Is 100 worse or 92? I see that the last part is on 100 anyway. Can someone who has driven please offer some advice?

The 92 is better, but the 100 is fine. I suggest going down one way and back the other so you see different things.

Looking for the most accessible spot for seeing puffins ideally somewhere between St. John's and the reserve and the most likely time of the year for this to occur .. with thanks

Hi Edward,
You may not see many puffins at cape St. Mary's. The ecological reserve is fantastic to see gannets in particular. There are other birds there as well during the spring/summer. When we went at the end of August, it was all Gannets. I would recommend going for sure if you have time. If it's Puffins you are after in particular, then the closest spot with rookeries is Witless Bay just south of St. John's. I have not been myself so don't know if you can access them from the land too much. There are "Puffin Boat Tours" available though that will likely give you a good look. You can find puffins here an there along the coast but not the large rookeries as in Witless bay.
If you are willing to go further, then Elliston is a really good place to go. (read my review and see photo's). Once again, we were at the tail end of Puffin season. At the end of August and the beginning of September, they head out to sea where they spend the Winter. They come back to reclaim their burrows in the spring/early summer. A friend was there in July and said there were lots of them so close he had to back up a bit to take pictures.
I can't post a link but go to the newfoundlandlabrador website (then) ThingsToDo (then) BirdWatching
Hope this helps.
