Ignore the fog!

When they say that bird rock is near the coastline, they meant it! It is mere meters away and easily visible without binoculars or using a zoom lens. It was amazing to see so many types of birds all together. We were lucky enough to visit when there were lost of baby birds to see also. It was a beautiful morning, but a few minutes before we reached the interpretation center we encountered extremely thick fog. You could barely see the building from the parking lot. However the staff member explained that "any day you can actually see the parking lot from the building at all is a good day" and assured us we should have no problem seeing the birds but to be careful walking the path and to stay withing the trail markers. It was about a 15-20 minute walk along a coastal path. Although the views were obscured by the fog, walking through the thick fog and watching it come rolling up over the cliffs was actually very beautiful and added to our experience. Just before we reached bird rock the fog dissipated and we had perfect views. We had the place to ourselves for about a half hour. It was amazing! A couple of things to point out. If you have mobility issues, you will find it difficult or impossible to travel the path to bird rock. If you have problems with noise, be warned that it is EXTREMELY noisy from all of the birds. As well, the smell is a little overpowering. Parking is plentiful and the bathrooms were very clean at the interpretation center. Overall, I am so glad that we made the trip to visit here and highly recommend it.

The close up look at thousands of birds was amazing. The drive there is not great but was worth it. Be sure to check the weather because fog is not hoof to see the birds.

Cape St. Mary’s has the most beautiful coastline. I am not much of a birder but if you are this is the place to go. For me the walk along the edge of the Atlantic Ocean is breathtaking. The staff are friendly and knowledgeable. I highly recommend Cape St. Mary’s as a must see in Newfoundland and Labrador.

Off the beaten track, but well worth the trip. There is an interpretive center and gift store and the rock is about a mile walk across a field with a cliff that drops off into the ocean, Once at the rock you will be amazed by all the Gannets covering the rock. A once in a lifetime experience.

What a treasure Cape St. Mary’s is! Ask to watch Gannet video before taking a beautiful hike out to view them. For me it was most definitely a life highlight. You are able to see absolutely every aspect of Gannet life.

Cape St. Mary's Ecological Reserve was one of, if not the, highlight of our vacation to Newfoundland. It's the home to one of Newfoundland's largest seabird colonies (Northern gannet, black-legged kittiwake, common murre, and thick-billed murre, as well as razorbill, black guillemot, double-crested and great cormorant, and Northern fulmar). Depending on the season, all of these birds can be seen from land, as close as 10 metres away. The drive to get there alone is very interesting - a fairly narrow paved roadway through rather barren land on either side. We found out later that Cape St. Mary's is within the Eastern Hyper-oceanic Barrens ecoregion, one of the world's most southerly expanses of sub-Arctic tundra.

Upon arrival at the reserve, entrance is through the Interpretation Centre, which was very interesting and had some great exhibits. From there, the 1-km footpath to Bird Rock is through open meadows atop steep cliffs. We saw many wild iris and other alpine wildflowers and low-growing shrubs along the way. As we progressed along the pathway, it just kept getting better and better. We were thrilled at how close we actually were to the birds by the time we reached the end of the trail. It was simply amazing and awe-inspiring! Luckily for us, we had a perfect sunny day with no clouds or fog. Highly recommended!

AT the end of the Cape. Beautiful pasture land. No traffic, no people, no trees. Just a simple old grassy trail out in the open along the edge of the beautiful Nfld coastline. And at the end of that trail a stunning display of gannets flying and squawking like crazy on their perches on the rocks. It is awe inspiring. Very much like a spiritual experience to be there. It makes one stop and not talk, and just BE and BEHOLD. Nature at its finest. One of my favorite places.

What a beautiful stop on our staycation!!! I have lived in NL most of my life and never knew this site was as spectacular. The staff at the interpretation centre were lovely. The collections of birds at this site was amazing, but for me the absolute highlight was the spectacular ocean views. The weather was glorious, the sun danced across the sparkling blue ocean , not a cloud in the sky. The beautiful "barrens" lush with native flora. I was stunned.I could have sat for hours. Definitely a must stop location. 2hours and a bit from St John's, but I would go via Placentia so 3 hours. A great day trip! Very little in the way of restaurants in this part so pack a lunch. A picnic is a great way to extend your outdoor experience. Check the forecast as this area tends to get a lot of fog. A clear day gives you the best experience for sure.
