Visited the castle for a weekend whilst camping with friends from ECWS, good to be able to look around during the day, did not explore after dusk.

Interesting place, plenty to see in the grounds. It is a place we often go to for sniffer dog training. Plenty of places for people to hide (and be found), Not crowded at all. Very accessible for all.

There is not a hugh amount to see but equally it is not expensive to get in. This is a great place to have a wander after a pub lunch. Friendly staff and a great Lego model.

We had to book to visit online which was easy. Once you have a ticket you can visit for a year for free. We really enjoyed the day and it was bigger than we thought to visit. The staff are really friendly. There was a guide who spoke to us in depth about the history of Basing House, which was very interesting. There was a reenactment day on with soldiers with muskets and pikes. We watched them do a demonstration. The cafe lady was so friendly and helpful. She made us tea & served us cake. She even found us 2 chairs and a table, when there was no seating outside left. We had a great day and will bring a picnic when we visit next time.

Been a few times. Not lots to see if you are expecting a castle or stately home. If you like walking there are lots of different parts of the old buildings to be seen, mostly at ground level. Small museum next to walled garden and a very impressive restored barn across the road showing civil war damage to walls. The ticket you buy allows entry for a year so good value if you live or visit near. They have quite a few events over the year like civil war re-enactments.

Being a lovely sunny September Sunday we wanted to go out somewhere fairly local for a few hours, which wasn’t one of our normal haunts. We remembered seeing signs for Basing House on the way down to join the motorway so decided to drive over and take a look as we are both keen on history.

It’s really important that places like this are preserved and kept open for the public to enjoy and I’m glad that the Hampshire Cultural Trust is doing just that - there were lots of interesting, if a little tired information boards, a great Lego model of the old and new houses, a small museum with a good short film explaining the Civil War siege and a visitor centre (which we only passed through on the way in). The volunteer at the gate to the main outdoor site was very knowledgeable and enthusiastic and his passion shone through.

The site of the Norman motte & bailey castle is quite hilly - it was a very warm day and we hadn’t eaten, so to be honest I don’t think we quite enjoyed our shortish visit as much as we might have done (at least I didn’t). I think the website mentions you can get a coffee or ice cream in the “cafe” - well, it is literally not much more than that, though there are some cold drinks too. When we go out, we normally like to have our lunch on arrival and then explore the property, garden or area. If I’d read some of the Trip Advisor reviews first we would have eaten beforehand somewhere en route or at home (or taken a picnic which you can eat in the grounds). As it was, we cut short our visit to go in search of lunch but tickets remain valid for 12 months, so I can definitely see us returning. I have also downloaded the free app to use on our next visit.

This is a lovely area - there seem to be nice walks near by and there is a pub a few minutes walk away, so I think there is enough to make a good day of it. Signage could be better but you basically need to head for the Barton’s Mill pub and walk past the front of the pub, turning right to walk along the Loddon river. I think we would also visit on a day when the free guided tour takes place.

In terms of tickets, there are discounts for booking online - only a quid per adult, but it all helps.

We stumbled on this hidden historic site dating from the Civil War and Oliver Crowell's times. We were late arriving so only looked at a fraction of the site but the volunteer staff were very helpful in guiding us.
Could be a good place for a walk and picnic on a sunny day. Two pubs close by too.

It's taken us just over 40 years to finally visit this site since moving to the area. And what a site- difficult to navigate at first as you have to park in a neighbouring county to get there ( I exaggerate a little) but still a lovely walk through what seemed like butlins on this sunny Sunday in early September (it was a pub) before you get to the barn where you get your ticket. After exploring this you are told to cross the road and find the entrance to the ruins- I never did find the red gates I was told to look for but we found the right place where we were entranced by a short history by the guide and Lego reconstruction of the TWO huge houses that were originally there. The place itself is vast with fine views of the countryside sadly including Basingstoke a few miles away. We must have been there for a least 2 hours finally discovering the small museum which contained another great history of the siege itself. Budget cuts we were told give the site a slightly neglected air -overgrown bushes and uncut grassbut doesn't detract from the atmosphere. We returned the way we came and wondered how the people attending an outdoor play were going to find the right location-particularly in the dark. Good luck.

This place is really worth a visit, there is a lovely walk around the ruins of a beautiful palace/ hill fort. Good information on the boards and replica artifacts on each board. Museum is great, there is a tv which gives you the history and at the end an Ariel view. There is also a lovely nature trail where I saw butterflies, rabbits and pheasants. Unfortunately we could go in the barn as there was a wedding reception but what a beautiful building to have it in. Walk along the river to the pub was stunning. Plenty of parking. Good value for money I felt, first class day out. Thank you
