Visited Wat Tub Tao. Very peaceful, with no tourists around. Well worth a visit if you are travelling between chiang mai and Chiang Rai on route 107. Its a 2km drive from the Pha Hong Police booth.

ถ้ำตับเตา ตั้งอยู่ ณ ภูเขาทางทิศตะวันตก หมู่ที่ 13 อำเภอไชยปราการ บนเส้นทางสายเชียงใหม่-ฝาง ระหว่างหลักกิโลเมตร ที่ 120 และ 121 แยกซ้ายมือเข้าไปประมาณ 3 กิโลเมตร อยู่ภายในวัด วัดแห่งนี้มีเนื้อที่ทั้งหมดประมาณ 35 ไร่ ตั้งอยู่บริเวณเชิงเขาถ้ำตับเต่า

My friends and I visited the two caves, Light Cave and Dark Cave. It didn't take long to go around in the Light Cave. But in the Dark Cave, every visitor should be a little more careful because there are some cliffs inside, and we spent about 40 minutes in the Dark Cave since there's no way out when you reach the 'destination' inside, just turning around and following the old path you just walked a while ago.

The Tub Tao Cave complex doesn't even get a mention in most travel books which is a shame because, in my opinion, it is far more impressive than the popular Chiang Dao Cave which I had just visited the day before. If you have your own wheels (I was biking) and are travelling on Route 107 between Chiang Dao and Fang (north of Chiang Mai) you'll see a sign post to the caves on the left just a few kilometers before the town of Chai Prakan. Turn off here and the caves are about 2.5 kilometers along this side road. Here you'll find quite a few temple buildings and Buddha statues in immaculately clean wooded grounds. A lady in a kiosk will turn the lights on and lend you a torch for entry to the right hand cave (Tham Phan Jak, Dark Cave) for Baht 100 which is accessed after ascending a long flight of stairs. The series of caves is amazing, several huge chambers, some linked only by crawl space. If you can make it right to the end and return it will take slightly over an hour. The second cave (Tham Pha Kha, Light Cave) is entered via a path to the left. It consists of one huge chamber with one of the largest seated Buddha statues I've seen inside. On the left is a beautiful Reclining Buddha surrounded by dozens of devotees. When your eyes get used to the dim light you'll be amazed at the scale of these two statues and wonder how they could have been constructed in such a location.
If you wish to stay in the location as I did then head back to Route 107 turn left and within one kilometer you'll find Chaiprakan Banai Resort which has chalet type accommodation for Baht 650 including breakfast.
