We had a lovely wander through the park after visiting the museum. The beds were lovely display of colour and everywhere was well kept. Saw our first duckling, it was a shame the lake had some rubbish in. There was a large play park and plenty room for kids to play.

Stayed very close to this park so we took a leisurely walk around the whole area. It was clean and well maintained with lots of interesting features. It was very quiet but we did appreciate some fresh air and a long journey. Would like to see the park during the summer months with a dash of colour.

If you fancy a nice soothing walk or you need to de-stress, this fantastic area in the middle of the city is the place to be. You can find Mowbray Park behind the Sunderland Museum. It's a large green space with a lake which has many ducks you can feed and watch. You can have a stroll around the gardens with the beautiful flowers, have a picnic and play games on the grassed areas, or just sit and watch the world go by from under the trees. And its free!

Mowbray Park is a park located centrally within the City of Sunderland next to The Winter Gardens. It is accessible on foot and is located about a fifteen-minute walk from the bus and metro station within the City centre.
You can enter the park from the main road walking around the side of The Winter Gardens which is a museum, library and cafe at the bottom of one of the shopping precincts in the city. As you enter the park, you can choose to go left or go straight ahead but if you do look to (or go to the path on the left), you will see a bronze statue next to part of the lake. If you continue up the path, you will continue onto a cenotaph and then eventually a tribute to an accident involving the deaths of several children which has been captured in a stone memorial statue so not to be forgotten.
If you make your way through the park, you will eventually come to a bridged walkover which gives you access to the bandstand further on.
The park is lovely during the decent weather with the open space, floral displays and wildlife (ducks, swans and other birds) and it is definitely worth a visit either for a long idle walk or to entertain the kids with a football.
If you are in Sunderland, the weather is warm and you want something different to do that is free, you cannot go wrong by taking a walk around the park and taking in some of Sunderland's history.

We turned up early and the gate staff happily let us in. The lights where beautiful and the actors and people on stilts dressed up where fabulous. Good idea charging a small fee of £3. Place wasnt crowded but enough people to have a lovely Christmas atmosphere. We took our family who were visting us and they returned the next night.

Hi Everyone,
We visited the Festival of Lights in Sunderland yesterday and wanted to share our experience with you all.
We booked a 6pm slot but arrived a little early which wasn't a problem at all we were allowed straight in. The park itself was quite busy but by no means crowed and we could take all the the lights in at our own pace.
The lights were absolutely fantastic and many you could actually sit inside, my daughters particularly loved going into the carriage which had very much a Cinderella feel to it. There was also an amazing train and a hot air balloon which we particularly liked.
Alongside the lights there was lots of different characters about who were more than happy to chat and have photos taken. We met Jack Frost, a Christmas Tree, the Snow Queen and some pixies.
We had booked to see a show in the Tipi which cost £3 per child. The kids all seemed to enjoy the entertainment. We personally didn't think it was the best as it was more party entertainer style than an actual show but for the price it definitely added to the night positively and the kids enjoyed it. We noticed the earlier shows had sold out but for the later ones people were able to pay on the door.
The atmosphere in the park was so Christmassy with Christmas music playing throughout and boasted dedicated Christmas installations, it definitely put us in a festive mood.
There was plenty of food stalls most right at the front of park and a couple dotted about inside so they didn't pull your attention from the lights. The park had lots of toilet facilities too. I also have to say how friendly all the event staff were. They couldn't have been more accommodating taking photos and answering queries.
The lights are on until the 22nd December and we would definitely recommend a visit and as a bonus parking in Council car parks is free after 3pm for the Festival of Light nights.

We visited the Museum and Winter Gardens and unfortunately were not as impressed as when we visited a couple of years ago. The same however cannot be said of the wonderful Mowbray Park which is ful of colour and is absolutely brilliant. What a magic place, especially in the sunshine, and a real bonus for anyone visiting Sunderland.
