3 kertaa käyneenä voin suositella kaikille! Paljon eläimiä ja talvella näkyy eri eläimiä kuin kesällä. Kävelymatkaakin kertyy jos kiertää reitin. Jos koko reittiä ei halua mennä on mahdollista oikoa lyhyemmillä reiteille. Kierroksen lopuksi on farmi jossa on maatilan eläimiä joita pääsee myös silittämään. Pandatalon yhteydestä saa myös lounasta/ruokaa:)

Overall a place worth visiting if you are in Finland. The Pandas are fun creatures to see an I hope Ähtäri Canon find a way to kelpaa them here.
The whole place was very neat and well maintained.
Lots of children but we enjoyed it as adults as well.

Честно сказать, поехали в Ähtäri только ради панд. Прогулка получилась хорошая, за животными всегда интересно наблюдать, но этот зоопарк не сильно впечатлил. Панды — уморительные мишки. На них можно долго смотреть.

We've been to many Zoos abroad and we have also visited Korkeasaari Zoo at Helsinki, Finland. For the last of this summer we wanted to see the beauty of Ähtäri Zoo. This turned out to be a total failure and a regret!
We paid 93 EUR (~USD110) for two adults and one kid for full day. On their website there is no mention about major amount of animals being relocated and not being available for paying customers. Way too many cages were empty and too many signs saying that they are currently building this and that area.
The day was partly rainy & cloudy and that caused many animals to hide. That is normal and it was okay to us. But it wasn't okay that they didn't mention before paying that the whole Zoo is mostly under renovation/construction atm and some areas are closed due to COVID-19 and a Cherry on top of this was the huge amount of empty cages! That was just plain craziness!
The cages where there was animals looked a bit odd. Like the Bears were so skinny (or young?) and there was so small amount of them. European Bisons use to be huge about 15-20 years ago and now they are so few there and they are even small and skinny. It all made us wonder if they even feed these left animals enough?!
Outside the Zoo the Car Parking Machines were Out of Order. We had to walk back from the parking lot to the Souvenir Store to buy the 5 EUR ticket (they didn't bother to put a sign on the EXIT of the Zoo). Just that you know, it's not allowed to drive off during your visit. Ice-Cream seller closed before 7pm and we were left empty handed. During your visit you can walk out of the Zoo and go back in as many times as you wish with the paid ticket. On the route there is a cafeteria which sells Meira's coffee named 'Kulta Katriina' which is a fine substitute when there is no Italian coffee available. The ticker selling building was closed already after 6pm (Zoo closes at 9pm on the summer season) and some customers were lost on where to buy tickets as the signs looked confusing to them.
Overall: There isn't much to see for the money. I would rather recommend to take a ferry and go to Estonia's Zoo called Tallinna Loomaaed. They have way more animals and no lies on their website. Or if you prefer Finnish ones then Korkeasaari gave much more to see this year. The Good thing in Ähtäri was that there is really many spots for a picnic if you come with your own food. Also some WCs were available (yes real Water Closets). The Ice-Cream they sell are Unilever Ingman ones.
On their food sections they don't offer Dairy Free options and the only choice is to take totally Vegan ones (without meat of course).
To make the Zoo better there is a lot to improve and they should listen to their customers who pays all the fun.

It was so amazing to see pandas in real life. They were adorable, very active, cool to see them climbing the pole so high and also eating the bamboo.
The rest of the zoo was a pleasant walk through the forest, but because it was near 30 degrees, many of the animals were hiding away, so we missed seeing a selection of the animals. Something to be aware of if expecting to see animals on hot days. Still overall a pleasant walk with the family and the highlight and main purpose of the visit was successful (the pandas).
Good facilities through out the walk: toilets, rest stops, play equipment, kiosks. Nice cafe at the entrance/exit with very good selection of foods/drinks.
Would recommend bringing your own water bottle and refilling on the way.

For whatever reason, the tickets which you can buy through Tripadvisor were declined on the morning when we were supposed to arrive to the Zoo. We had to buy the tickets through the Ähtari zoo webpage, which made the total sum around 60€ more expensive, than what we planned. But hey, we wanted to go there on Monday, and that's what we did. We had 4 adults, 2 kids, and one baby.
The people at the entrance and main coffee shop were very nice. At the kiosks which they have a few inside the park, they have hired some local students to help, which is normal in Finland during summertime. Nothing wrong with them, just, if you don't know of this, you might be wondering about all the young faces working there.
The food in the main cafe was very good, surprisingly good. We were expecting some so-so lunch but thoroughly enjoyed it. The staff were very nice. They have a soup lunch set, which is about 10€. Including salad and coffee. That was very good. I had a double cheese bacon burger and that was very good, as I always go with a burger, if there is this choice available. It wasn't as salty as I expected it to be, as, in Finland, everything has so much salt and butter in it by default.
The zoo itself was a nice experience. I've been here over 10-years ago and it has changed a lot, but for the better. I like the walk through the forest. My kids especially enjoyed the playground which can be found around the middle of the walk. Other kids like it also, as many parents were seeing their offspring climbing and sliding there while enjoying ice cream or coffee from the coffee shop which was located next to it. If you're expecting to see lots of exotic animals, this is not a place for you, but if you like to walk in nature and occasionally bump into different animal enclosures, then this is a place for you. I like this setup over more exotic animals. They have some strollers where you can either put your back bags, or your kids, or just some friend who is too tired and you need to push them around. You can manage with these, as the whole place is wheelchair accessible. There are few moments where you think about how can a person with a wheelchair make this steep rise without help, but as I don't know any better, I just assume they can. For me, pushing my lazy daughters. Three of them. At some points, it became a really good exercise.
There was plenty of parking space. Three parking lots in total. Two were free and the closest one, P1, cost 5€ per day. If you stay in the hotel, then it's free.
I will go again, although, I do think, through Tripadvisor, the price would be more reasonable. Maybe I'll just need to order the tickets so much more early.
Also, bring your own drinks, as they do know that a thirsty person will pay for a drink, even though they are cursing about the price while consuming it.

Eläinpuisto, jossa on helppo edetä loogisesti kolmen kilometrin mittaista reittiä seuraten. Lämpimänä kesäkuun päivänä eläimiä oli ilahduttavan paljon liikkeellä. Eläinten tilat vaikuttivat hyvinhoidetuilta, vaikka ainahan tilaa voisi olla enemmän. Sama ongelma toki vaivaa kaikkia eläintarhoja ja- puistoja, mikä pistää miettimään niiden eettisyyttä ylipäätään.
Samalla lipulla pääsee myös katsomaan pandoja sekä vierailemaan farmilla, jossa tytär pääsi onnekkaasti myös syöttämään lampaille ja vuohille porkkanoita.
Käyntiin on hyvä varata aikaa - meillä meni reilut kolme tuntia.

Pandat näimme ja toki ihania. Muu eläinpuisto tuntui jotenkin surulliselta, ihan kuin kaikki panostus olisi laitettu vain pandataloon. Eläimiä ei monessakaan kohteessa näkynyt lainkaan. Osa eläinten tiloista vaikutti pieniltä ja hoitamattomilta, eläimet apaattisilta ja säälittäviltä.

Tämä paikka summaa koronavuoden Suomessa. Ajamme poikien 4 ja 7 vuotiaiden kanssa Ähtäriin noin 350 km katsomaan pandoja. Katson vielä aamulla verkkosivuilta, että pandat on nähtävillä. Verkkosivuilla (englanniksi kun puhelimen asetukset avaavat sivut näin) ei mitään tietoa ja liput ostetaan netistä.
Tiskillä ei ole vähää aikaan ketään ja sitten sinne tulee "asiakaspalvelija"
-Miten päästään katsomaan pandoja?
-Se on nyt kiinni.
-Ai ei ollut tällaista tietoa netissä.
-No kiinni se nyt on. Pitää laittaa verkkovastaaville viestiä, että laittavat selkeämmin infoa.
-Selvä!
Eli ajettiin Ähtäriin katsomaan samat eläimet, jotka olisi löytyneet Korkeasaaresta 10 km päästä kotia.
Eli jos ja toivottavasti kun tämä korona nyt loppuu kesällä lupaan, etten tule laittamaan senttiäkään kotimaan matkailuun elämässäni. Se on:
A törkeän hintaista
B laadultaan 70- luvun Neukkulaa vastaavaa
C palvelutasoltaan 30 -luvun Neukkulaa vastaavaa

I can't find train details to travel from Helsinki to Ahtari Zoo on May 13 and return to Helsinki Airport on May 14. I have 1 night accommodation booked close to Zoo. Thank you Rosemary Australia

Hi,
You can buy train tickets 60 days in advance. From Helsinki you will have to travel with a change. Check VR.fi (they have English version as well).

Hi Rosemary, I heard the timetible for May will be published in February, so not so many months beforehand. No major changes have been made to the timetables lately, so I suggest you check the current connections and timetables and start planning your journey based on them (check vr.fi)
And as Niina already mentioned, the train stop is called Ähtäri Eläinpuisto-Zoo - some 10 minutes walk from the Zoo. Welcome to Ähtäri! 🐼🐼
