We had a very extensive tour led by a Guide. This gentleman told very clearly and passionately about the coal mines. It was very educational. I especially liked that he had an eye and attention for the (small) children: He made sure they were in front at every point and didn't miss anything. A tip after the tour is much appreciated.

Our visit to the coal mine in Valkenburg was an impressive experience that gave us a fascinating insight into the hard life of the miners. The tour was led by Guide Charlie, whose captivating story and entertaining, if lame, jokes brought history to life in a vivid way.
Charlie captivated the group with his knowledge and enthusiasm, which made the tour very interesting. His stories about life in the mine and the hardships the miners had to endure made a deep impression. The funny quips in between kept the atmosphere light, which definitely added to the experience.
A small minus was the size of the group. Because of this it was sometimes difficult to see and understand everything well, because sometimes you had to fight for a good place in the circle. This could probably have been better with a slightly smaller group size, so that everyone could fully enjoy the tour.
Although it is a pity that this coal mine is not authentic, but a carefully recreated museum in a marl cave, this does little to detract from the experience. The reconstruction is detailed and realistic, giving you a good idea of the conditions under which miners did their work. The atmosphere of the mine is portrayed in an impressive way, allowing you to really empathize with history.
All in all, the visit to the coal mine in Valkenburg was an educational and fascinating experience. It gives a breathtaking insight into the heavy work of the miners and leaves a lasting impression. Despite some minor downsides, this is definitely a must for anyone interested in the history of mining in the Netherlands.

The museum can only be visited with a guided tour, which cannot be booked in advance. The Dutch Museumkaart is not accepted, but it is no problem to get a ticket.
First they show a very old, much too long movie about mining, in which you can see miners completely naked in the shower. This is a questionable thing, because there are many minors among the visitors.
Afterwards, a former miner gives a tour through a reconstructed coal mine in an old quarry. The tour took much longer than planned on the day of our visit, so we had to skip another attraction afterwards due to time constraints.
One criticism was that the group size was much too large, as the narrow corridors meant that the group was spread out, so we couldn't hear many of the explanations and could barely see the exhibits as there were always people standing in front of them.
However, the main point of criticism was the very uneven paths with many tripping hazards. At one point, the path suddenly dropped several steps without warning and with little lighting. There was a railing on the right, which I used for safety, but it was completely useless as it was very slippery due to the high humidity and offered no support. I slipped on the steps, could barely hold on, and hit my arms against the wall when I turned, causing abrasions. Fortunately, two visitors caught me so I didn't hit the ground completely. I don't understand why they don't illuminate the visitors' walkway more brightly in dangerous places and why they don't put up clear warning signs in several languages. The railings should also be coated with a non-slip material.

Kaartjes kunnen vooraf online aangeschaft worden en de overige kritiek had u kunnen voorkomen door wat voorbereiding en een bezoek aan onze site, waar ook de tickets geboekt hadden kunnen worden.

I have previously visited the cave with a larger group on a guided tour, this time with my wife and children. Because the kids are fans of the Efteling attraction 'Rijksmijnmuseum Baron 1898', there were several recognitions here. After we first watched the film (15 minutes), we were shown around by a Limburg expert from the national mines. After more than an hour of enthusiastic talk, he was actually not done yet.

I thought it was an authentic coal mine called "Steenkolenmijn Valkenburg", but they transferred old mining equipment from elsewhere to a marl cave. You go there with a guide who tells you a lot about what happens underground and shows that he does all this voluntarily. (hence the sign at the end of the tour "don't forget the guide") It's all quite nice, but nothing more, especially considering the poor lighting, so much cannot be seen. The entrance fee is quite high, 14 Euro per person and 5 Euro parking. You then wonder why there are such high prices compared to, for example, visiting a (beautiful) mine in Belgium in Beringen, which then charges 6 euros per person. This may be due to the fact that the mine in Limburg belongs to a private individual and the one in Belgium does not!

Very informative. Personally, I didn't really like it for kids. Be sure to have good mobility and be able to tolerate loud noises because a machine is regularly turned on to experience the sound those miners heard. Children can be frightened by this.

Bedankt voor de mooie recensie en de vier sterren beoordeling. Er wordt voordat er een machine wordt gedemonstreerd altijd gewaarschuwd voor het geluid zodat ouders hun kinderen er op kunnen voorbereiden. Bovendien zijn de demonstraties kort.

If you are in Valkenburg, I definitely recommend going here. Suitable for both adults and children.

Jammer dat er tussen de foto's van de steenkoolmijn in Valkenburg zoveel foto's staan van Valkenburg zelf, en zelfs eentje van een fiets??? Die zouden jullie beter kunnen verwijderen, lijkt mij.
