If you have even the vaguest of interest in old machines, celestial bodies or human endeavor then this is one of the best 6 Euros you'll ever spend! It's just incredible that some random guy who carded and dyed wool for a living could construct such a machine in the ceiling of the one room his family of 5 lived and slept in, that it worked first time, is still working 230 years later and that his wife let him do it! His fix for her one complaint is quite amazing, also that his reason for doing it in the first place was to counter the local vicar's misinformation campaign! There is loads to see here, it's not just in, see it and out again, allow 2 hours. Useful info - look at the displays and wait for the PA to call you into the actual planetarium room in English. When you've had the English Language description you can go back to finish the displays. Don't expect to see things whizzing around - it moves at the same speed as the planets are actually moving!

Unbelievable how someone invents and can build this around 1774. We have our eyes out. Really very nice to visit. Don't forget to book in advance, because the number of visitors is limited and full = full.

Absolutely loved to see how much care has been taken to keep the worlds older working planetarium going. You can tell the staff love what they do and it was Ana amazing experience. Definitely can recommend! Would suggest finding other cities nearby to have a look at as the town doesn’t have much happening.

This is one of those places you must have seen in your life. How someone with handicrafts and the knowledge of the 18th century can deliver such an impressive technical feat with exceptionally accurate representations of times and positions of planets etc. is special.
The way to the clock at the top is via a very narrow and rickety staircase, but that challenge is worth it. Furthermore, the necessary interactive has been added to allow young teenagers to keep their attention.

The Eise Eisinga Planetarium is THE reason to visit Franeker and well worth a detour. A small but absolutely stunning museum. Explanations take place every half hour in Dutch or English language. Staff is enthusiastic and presents in a way which is easily understandable to the general public.
Entrance tickets are linked to specific time slots and it is necessary to book tickets in advance.

This is so special that everyone should actually go here! A clock that was made 200 years ago in the living room....with box bed..... And in the attic all the wheels and cogs. The celestial bodies are also rotated clockwise. While he, Eise, was actually a wool comber.

Because I would be in the area, I visited this UNESCO heritage site. Well informed in advance via the clear website and purchased a ticket for a specific time.
I got there a little earlier than the starting time on my entrance ticket, but that was no problem. Interesting exhibition about the universe and the zodiac. Also attention is paid to the wool combing factory that Eisinga ran in addition to building the Planetarium.
The explanation at the Planetarium was nice, because otherwise you would just stare at that ceiling and not really know what you are looking at.
In the attic you could see how the Planetarium is powered.
