Firstly the welcome was superb and the volunteers in each room were lovely. The gardens were neglected but the walled garden was well kept and full of produce. The reason for giving it 2 stars is solely on our experience in the tearoom. We arrived for a late coffee and before they started lunch. The tearoom was not full and we were told to choose a table, which we did and looked at the menu and cakes on display. We then sat and waited to be served by one of the THREE people serving. Sadly, we were ignored by all three over and over again until we gave up and left, There seemed to be no organisation of how they served tables and the people who arrived after us got served straight away. I tried to catch the eye of the main person serving and she point blank ignored me. Not good enough. Sad because we were looking forward to a special coffee and the cakes looked good too.

Tucked just off the A1 near Scotch Corner it would have been easy to have missed this gem but, as it was, it was perfect for a stop to sit in beautiful gardens and eat our sandwiches. A lovely old Jacobean house with a recusant history and the family were important colonisers of Maryland. The house is surrounded by beautifully maintained gardens and looks out over a magnificent lake. We were able to eat our sandwiches
in front of the house overlooking the lake. Very pretty walks but sadly we didn't have time to visit the museum. Something to do on another visit.

Disappointed that only takeaway service offered on the terrace. Radio advert states afternoon tea with a view. Paper cup and pre packed sandwich not good and over priced.

Really enjoyed my visit again. Beautiful gardens. Well done to the gardening staff. Stunning location. Wonderful for photography. Very dog-friendly, even allowed in the atmospheric Jacobean Tea Room now! (The very best egg sandwiches I have ever tasted, with Kiplin chutney! ) Good news because don't choose to leave my dogs in car but neither are they safe tied up outside. Makes my solo traveller experience so much more enjoyable. Extremely pleasant and helpful staff at reception and cafe. Thank you.

One of the nicest places we have ever visited. The hall was a real gem, the guides very knowledgeable and friendly. Lovely garden and the walk around the lake was delightful.
The device in the tea room was the best we have ever experienced, with lovely staff and excellent scones.
A wonderful day out, thank you to all the staff.

A beautiful characterful hall which we loved visiting and felt it was loved by those who work and volunteer there. It has lots to offer from pretty gardens, play area and lake walk to a very impressive looking wood panelled tea room. The little cart selling the hall’s garden produce is an inspired idea, we would have made a purchase had we not been on a road trip to Scotland. The hall’s rooms were wonderful and had a homely feel that rarely comes across in such houses. The guides in each room told us interesting facts as we went round, they were excellent, to the point and informative, so much better than having to read a dry leaflet. (What an amazing woman Bridget Elizabeth Talbot was!) Other houses should take note, this is the way to present to the public. Well done.

The house. A grand house rather than a stately home. Lots of interesting things to see and very helpful well informed room stewards who make a significant contribution to the enjoyment of the rooms with their knowledge of the background to the room contents and usage. Very friendly and a credit to the estate.

The gardens. Not the best time of year admittedly but they looked shabby and neglected. Lot of weeds in the beds, hedges untrimmed, very little to see. A disappointment when gardens should at this stage be being prepared for the surge of spring and summer growth. They should at least be tidy.

The cafe. Friendly service. Overpriced. Two slices of bread, with not a lot of filling, a thin spread of chutney with very little flavour, a small amount of salad and very salty thick crisps, for £7. Not good value. The mismatched crockery gave the impression of a raid on charity shops bric-a-brac shelves rather than an elegant country house atmoshere. Unimpressed.

And we were overcharged. We had one pot of tea but were charged for two. I only discovered this when I was checking receipts against my credit card bil or I would have raised it at the time.

Absolutely fantastic visit so interesting and well done all volunteers for all your hard work. Only one problem a small tearoom where we couldn't get a seat due to people out staying there welcome sitting there for ages having eaten please be polite and ask them to move on as others would love the experience I know it's difficult can't please us all but there are selfish people about

This is a Jacobean House built around 1620 with a later library addition. Following the death of the last owner it is now run by a Trust and is staffed mainly by volunteers. It is also part of the Historic Houses scheme where admission is free to members.
Inside the property, there is a refreshing lack of formality with very few areas roped off allowing you to explore at leisure. The house is decorated with furnishings from a variety of eras and styles with many paintings of the four families who previously owned the estate. The volunteers think of themselves as the fifth family to own the hall which is a lovely way to see things. They are continuing to open up rooms in the house and although it may not have the grand opulence of some houses, it is no worse for it and is much more personal and less stuffy than many grand places you can visit. Inside the entrance to the house there is a gorgeous tea room, one of the most atmospheric we have seen in any county house.
Outside there are extensive grounds and a lot of work is underway to renovate the walled garden, again this is mainly being done by volunteers. A lake was created in the 20th century after the fields around the back of the house were dug out for minerals then flooded. This exercise provided funds to totally renovate the property which in later life under the last owner had become quite dilapidated and some rooms have been left in their original state to illustrate this. Before this lifeline, demolition of the house was looking likely. The lake now looks like it has been there for centuries and there is a large resident bird population to view.
We loved our visit and is the house is distinctly less ‘corporate’ than many National Trust owned properties you will see.
