Visit the former UN facilities of the Blue Helmets battalion of the Netherlands now transformed into a museum and memorial. It was especially brutal the 30-minute documentary to summarize the event. It's almost impossible to contain tears. The visit is free but from what I realized on their website it is possible to make donations by bank transfer. And yes it should be supported financially but this way. The entrance to the cemetery requires its own dress code for religious respect.
I remembered the news that passed on my father's television of this war and genocide and at the time it seemed so distant and almost a movie...But after all not, it was not a movie and unfortunately it is happening today in other countries of the world. It should be mandatory for everyone to visit these memorials once in their lives and our politicians and rulers should be obliged to visit once a year...For the World can be better!!
I highly recommend.

“8372…”
The confirmed deaths, to date, of the Srebrenica genocide: one of the ugliest, and forgotten, pages in recent history.
Hard to describe what it feels like there, in front of those names, those stories, those shoes, that tragedy.
Thought, wanted, still denied by too many.
Go, look, listen, tell her those stories too.
Let’s talk today with those who were there, remember them tomorrow when they can no longer do it.
Thanks to Almir and all the staff of the memorial for reminding us once again of the duty of memory.
Go, help Srebrenica and its museum, so it never happens again.

The Srebrenica Memorial Museum is a powerful and necessary experience. The exhibits are a necessary education. It reminds us of the depths of human cruelty inflicted on the Bosnians, but also the enduring strength of the human spirit of the survivors. It compels us to remember, to learn, and to fight for a future where such horrors never happen again. If you visit Srebrenica, the museum is a must-see. It's a challenging but vital piece of history.
Through photographs, personal belongings, and survivor testimonies, the museum sheds light on the lives lost and the profound impact on the community. It serves as a crucial reminder of the importance of remembering such tragedies and working to prevent them from happening again. While emotionally difficult, the museum offers a vital historical record and is a must-visit for anyone seeking to understand the Srebrenica genocide

I brought a small group of university students from the United States to visit Srebrenica Genocide Memorial as part of a spring break study away course covering war, genocide, peace & reconciliation. It is not merely a museum but a living memorial, honoring the memory of thousands while imparting invaluable lessons for generations to come. In a world where the echoes of hatred still reverberate, places like Srebrenica Genocide Memorial serve as beacons of light, reminding us of the power of remembrance, empathy, and education in combating darkness. If you have the opportunity, I implore you to visit this remarkable institution and bear witness to one of history's most profound lessons.
The Memorial’s design is a testament to thoughtful curation, seamlessly guiding visitors through the harrowing events of the Srebrenica genocide. Each exhibit is painstakingly arranged to evoke raw emotion, ensuring that the atrocities committed are not just recounted but felt. From photographs capturing the despair of the people, to personal belongings serving as haunting reminders of lives lost (the shoe art installation is profound and haunting), every artifact serves as a poignant reminder of the human cost of hatred and intolerance.
In conclusion, our experience at the Srebrenica Genocide Memorial was nothing short of exceptional. If you have the opportunity, please visit this remarkable institution.

This is one of those places that just exemplified the terrible things that human beings do to each other - time after time. The truth is, it is not easy to get here unless you have a vehicle or come in a group. But, a visit to both the museum on the left side of the street (coming from Sarajevo/Tuzla) and the cemetery on the right side of the road are such powerful experiences. The Memorial Center staff are often present to answer questions and - if you ask - might tell you about their own personal experience during that awful time. Each year (or almost every year), the cemetery adds new graves once remains are identified.

I came here as a solo traveler in September 2023 as part of an organized tour. I was lucky in that the Memorial Center was practically empty when I visited, and so I got to fully immerse myself in the exhibits. The way that the Memorial Center presents information is very powerful and moving, using a combination of text, photographs, and videos. The experience of the people of Srebrenica and the international political and military events are presented concurrently. Displays are in both Bosnian and English. The font size and color were appropriate, and I never had trouble reading the text. I only had 2.5 hours at the Memorial Center. I think you can easily spend an entire day here, but the content is quite heavy and somber. My only complaint is that the second floor was extremely hot; there was no air conditioning turned on on the day I attended. I was told by my guide that they do have air conditioning and he told me that I am not the first one to complain about the lack of air conditioning. It made it quite difficult to focus on the information presented. For example, there was a small room with no windows showing a five-minute video. I almost could not finish it because it was too hot and I started to feel dizzy. This is why I am rating the experience as 4/5 because the facilities could be improved. I can't imagine if the Center was packed with tourists, and how hot it could get.

There is an excellent introductory film and meaningful photos. But there is a lack of information about genocide survivors who are living again in their region of Srebrenica, but unfortunately under the authority of Republika Srpska, an entity that is co-responsible for the genocide. Nothing either on the Peace March l8 - July 10), launched in 2005 and which brings together thousands of walkers each year from Nezuk to Potocari/Srebrenica, in three days, in the footsteps of the column of 14,000 men who left from Srebrenica towards Nezuk on July 11, 1995. Only a minority survived several successive massacres, recognized as the "Srebrenica genocide".

There is both the UN base and the memorial cemetery here. Make sure you visit both.
It is pretty trippy that the whole way here from Sarajevo, you see homes and businesses flying the actual Serbian flag - and a shame that they need police at the front to protect from vandalism.
The base itself used to be factory before the war, and you can clearly still see the machinery inside, as well as markings on the wall where UN vehicles formerly parked. There is a lot of information inside in a small museum section, and pictures adorn the walls.
The cemetery is expansive, with a list of every victim and a small mini-mosque structure in the center, to perform religious duties for the deceased. There were stray animals wandering around but they did not seem to be aggressive, on the contrary maybe a little bit too friendly - with two dogs following me to the road!

There are almost no signs to help visitors find the memorial center. And be careful, it is not in Srebrenica, the memorial center is in Potočare, a few kilometers before Srebrenica. There are no entrance tickets - free entrance and hardly anyone will help you explore the site. On one side of the street there are graves, on the other side (follow the sign "toilets" and then turn right) is a former factory, where all was happening. Luckily we found some students inside (with formal badges) that explained us the history and all about the memorial site. Be sure to tip them, because they don't charge for the guiding tour.
I found it a bit strange, that the renovation works were going on like there was no memorial site, no respect...

Firstly, we thought that we only were able to see the old battery factory building. However, this place has been the highlight of our trip to BIH. I recommend to take your time when visiting the memorial cemetery and the museum as well. Thank you to the young lady who provided us professionally with additional information that was mentioned on the signs. This is a must-see place when you are visiting BIH.
Never forget Srebrenica 1995!
