Nostalgia for the adults, interactive activities for the kids. Best to visit on an event day and get your money's worth. The museum and café are very interesting, but somewhat limited and all over within an hour. On event days there is so much more to do for adults and kids. See their website for which days are event days.

We visited the Museum of Power in April 2024 with two kids. It had been recommended to us by family. We visited on a Thursday - since in school holidays that when they open the miniature railway and miniature village.
The Museum has recently been refurbished (the entrance still smelled of paint) and everything was clean, in order and well maintained. The various steam engines (including one of the large original water pumping engines) were all run intermittently through the day on compressed air. They were very impressive and not too noisy (fine for kids). There were lots of things for kids to interact with, such as moving cutaway combustion engines and a little old fashioned (but working) phone just by the door to the main room. On they day we visited craft activities had been put up for kids as well.
The staff were excellent, very welcoming and engaged. The amount of effort and engagement being put in by staff frankly puts other compatible museums to shame.
The cafe is good and well furnished, with an area open for dogs. There was also picnic seating outside as well as toilets inside and out.
The museum is not massive, with three main rooms. You can probably see most of it in about 1-2 hours.
Outside there is also a model railway and model village which are open on specific days. The model railway was good, consistent with others we have visited, and run by a bunch of enthusiastic volunteers (who also operated the engines in the museum). The model village is a passion project, built by one man over 24 years. It is more a kids entertainment then a scale recreation, but it's fun none the less. The creator was there when we visited and delighted in entertaining the visiting kids - with little quizzes maps and the odd magic trick.
There was also a crafting shed, but we did not visit it.
Overall thus is well worth the visit and great fun for kids. It is worth making the time to go there since it feels something of a hidden gem.

Went with 12 year old grandson. Although been several times before found since it has been done up the price for entry on non event days days is expensive, being you pay same price on event days. New cafe is very reasonable.

Though some areas are undergoing refurbishment, the museum continues to work such is the dedication and enthusiasm of the staff & volunteers. Our grandson was wide eyed at the exhibits in action - made particularly special by some Christmas exhibits. Can’t wait to return and enjoy lunch and refreshments on site too. Massive thank you to the Manager, Debbie & her colleagues for the extra special care to make it a most enjoyable experience for a young enthusiast beginning a journey on understanding how the world around us once worked and looking forward to the developing curation of how things are working today. Well done Debbie and team.

Very interesting museum of industrial history. Wide range of exhibits, some interactive. Informative information boards. Friendly, helpful volunteer guides. A nice cafe. Ample parking. We all enjoyed it very much.

Charming little museum with lots of buttons for my 3 and 7 year old boys to press while learning a thing or two about power and engines! At the end of a major lottery funded refurbishment so still a few works going on but that didn’t spoil the fun. The miniature railway, staffed by enthusiastic volunteers pleased the little ones and Dad!
We were fortunate to attend on the first Sunday of the month when the Astaria model village is open. Special thanks to Alan who had the children spellbound with his tales and magic! We didn’t get to sample the on-site cafe, or a walk down the nearby river which was a shame, the wife had other ideas for a pub lunch in Danbury instead.
All in all a nice way to spend a couple of hours on a November Sunday afternoon.

Went back yesterday for my 4 visit, and third summer steampunk event. The event was well managed considering they are in the middle of renovations. Nice cafe with good choice of food. I do hope the outside area will be resurfaced next, as that is very hazardous.
My only criticism would be the picnic area, it’s a beautiful quiet place to relax in, or it was until yesterday. I really think this area should be non smoking, trying to eat lunch and breath surrounded by people smoking was extremely unpleasant. This is a area for children as well, so not nice or healthy for them to have to breath in second hand smoke.

As a group of retired or semi retired people we have started a group to explore our industrial heritage and this was our first visit. We were welcomed by James who gave a fascinating talk, demonstrated the large pump engine and then was on hand to explain the other exhibits. We all enjoyed ourselves (despite feeling old remembering when we had vacuum cleaners like those on display!).
The food in the tea bar was excellent, served by great staff and reasonably priced.
We all had a great time, the staff are wonderful and most are planning a repeat visit with grand children, etc

Hi, sorry we haven't answered this sooner. We are open as normal (Wednesday to Sunday) until Sunday 17th December, we then close until our Crank Up event on New Years Day. We are closed for the rest of January for maintenance work. The tea room will be operating in January but not the Museum.
