This beach is good for those wanting a surf or strong waves for boogie boards. But also nice to have a long stretch of beach for walking - black sand (not the kids playing on the beach were covered!) It is a beautiful spot and we were there about noon and there were lifeguards. At the top of the beach there is a cafe - what more can you wish for?

Sunset Beach is stunning. Black sand that sparkles in the sunshine. Rolling waves. Interesting rocks. And miles to walk and enjoy. My dogs love it and so do I.

What a Gem

A lovely beach. A hidden gem. Surf for biggies and rock pools for littlies. A great combo and there's even a cafe.

As its name a beautiful beach at sunset

As its name it is a beautiful beach at sunset, facing to west toward Tasman Sea, a challenge for photographers to make their best captures when the sun is set. Relatively less popular which means less crowded, so visitors can enjoy their time more relax and spacious. The sand is black similar to the neighbouring other beach Karioitahi some 30 km to the north. One of the reasons the beach is less popular maybe because of the remoteness and distance of its location, some 89 km south from Auckland through small town Tuakau. Anyway, many people still coming to this beach for different reasons, many coming here because this beach is famous for fishing, a really good place for fishing, some maybe like its less crowded space, others just want to know how the NZ mighty river Waikato ends and discharges its water to Tasman Sea, at Sunset Beach near a really small town, Port Waikato.

At Easter on a glorious sunny day the beach was almost deserted. The sea was calm and we had a lovely walk. Lifeguards were present but not really needed. A natural and unspoiled beach.

Views for days, lovely spot. Surfers, families however it’s not easy to get down to the beach from the carpark. Worth a day in the sun.

This one's a gem!

Offers one of the best sunset views in the country and potentially wider Asia Pacific region. It's great for swimming, surfing, family fun, kids as well. Lifeguards on site so you can feel safe.

1 minute away is sand dunes and gardens with kids playing area as well. You could literally spend the whole day here with your family and friends.

Beautiful raw nature.

This is one of the most beautiful places that I have ever seen. The rough ocean of the West coast and the beautiful sand dunes. The sun setting over the ocean, is just breath taking. Well worth the effort to drive there.

Sunset Beach is where you learn about nature every day, it changes everyday. To see a beautiful west coast beach, this is the place. This beach has surf life savers, as it is at all New Zealand beaches find out local information before swimming at the beaches, as we want you to have an enjoyable time and re-visit our lovely places.
