Great scenery. But loud music at dinner and in the workshops disturbs the fantastic atmosphere. Everything's closed at 8:00. Value for money is not right.

I drove here from Sacramento leaving at 10:30am, and did not arrive until 5:30pm. The drive is supposed to be 4.5 hours but it took over 7 hours because of 10 mph traffic in Monterey that I had to sit in for over two hours. The drive is not worth it with that kind of traffic. I had an expensive massage set for 4:20 that I missed that I have been told will not be refunded by Esalenhealing arts . Total rip off and not worth the drive here at all :(.

beautiful, but NOT peaceful. staff was dismissive towards valid frustration over noise from a massive forestry project taking place directly adjacent to both housing and workshop space. for three days, a chainsaw blared and tractors & their backup warnings chirped incessantly. really…? who schedules this during a meditation workshop? the staff seemed to have zero concept of how hard one would work in the real world to be able to afford a visit to esalen.

I have been going there for years.. was one of favorite places in the US to go for interesting workshops and comfortable accommodations, expensive but worth it even though the food has always been hit or miss, little things like fresh baked bread out all of time to toast and butter after soaking naked in the baths.. well the bread is gone, no one will bother making you a cappuccino even though the machine sits there ( the staff used to be AWESOME but no more) rude uncaring staff members .
The intimate small workshops are gone to be replaced by 2 large rooms filled with 40 people and instructors who don’t bother learning your name.
And the PRICE! Omg a run down motel room that is $1000 a night with one old worn out garage sale furniture, up on a hill with a view but you can not hear the ocean. This is the cheapest private room for 2! We used to get an ocean front room for $800 a night with 2 beds and an ocean front patio, you could hear the ocean.. those rooms are $2000 a night now! It just sucks.. never going back

Review update. I started my retreat journey about a year and half ago. When you make a reservation on the type of accommodation, esalen would assign you the location right before your visit.
I stayed at Fritz Guest for the first couple of times to deal with loss of my mother and some health issues. That was a beautiful suite with a private ocean deck. Truly healing (see my prior review). Stayed at Watts Moslow the third visit. It has a good garden and ocean view but a bit far from the ocean.
I lost my father earlier this year. Esalen is calling again. I made my fourth visit with workshop. I got the Sea unit at the Murphy house. I was speechless. The feeling is very similar to Fritz Guest. Wake up to ocean right next to you and closer. Quiet also and in the middle of all actions. The room itself is not as updated as fritz but it has its old California charm. Sea is also the meaning of my name.
Workshop I got in was not what I wanted to go (the other was fully booked). Funny that it worked better for me. The fire night reminded me of my first workshop. It was also the night I ran into my first workshop instructor. Both dealing with grieving. Had a big release and reconciliation on Sunday morning.
I am very grateful to find (through Google lol) and visit this beautiful and healing site. I will be back again.

Es hat sich viel verändert. Die Workshops sind immer noch toll (abhängig vom Leiter).
Das Areal ist super und hat sich zum Glück kaum verändert - bis auf Sturmschäden.
Es wird ziemlich viel gebaut.
Die Zimmer sind veraltet. Die Matratzen sind durchgelegen und wirken abstoßend. Das ist sehr schade. Es wird extrem viel mit Chemie gereinigt - viel Zeug versprüht, statt geputzt.
Das Essen ist wie immer fabelhaft.
Leider haben sie fantastische Workshop-Lehrer mit großer Erfahrung einfach rausgeschmissen. Veränderung tut Not, aber die Art....
Das Preis-Leistungs-Verhältnis, was schon immer ziemlich hoch war, aber irgendwie doch angemessen, ist aus den Fugen geraten.

The reviewers seem to be treating Esalen just like any other luxury hotel. But it's not. If you attend the best workshop for you, meet and talk to people over meals, experience the baths etc. this can be a place for transformation. I know it has been for me, since I was a work scholar back in 1993 and from many return trips since.
I do remember how good the food was in the past and will admit last time I was there not every food item was up to that high standard. Maybe after the Pandemic the food budget had to be cut?
I also am not that thrilled with people "needing" to use their electronic devices and not going on digital detox.
There is no other retreat center like Esalen and you need to be open to whatever happens.

Do a thorough research on what you really want before booking, because it's not for everyone, if you know what I mean. One thing for sure, Esalen relies heavily on its rich past glory, and today it doen't even hold a candle.
If you're part of the overstressed silicone rat race crowd and don't mind blowing 2 to 3 grand in a weekend, this may be your artificial relief valve, but true holistic people "play" smartly and won't touch this place with a ten foot pole.
And if you decide to come, please, don't bring your kids.
By now you get the point.

I've come to many retreats for several years, and I can honestly say Esalen has completely lost it's true soul and holistic spirit in favor of profits. The staff acts indifferent, and out of touch with the institute's purpose. Nothing can be more frustrating than paying a fortune for services and then being treated by employees who act as if they're doing you a favor. There is a feeling of hollowness and lack of holistic connection, combined with an insatiable greed,

I can only describe my experience here as mendacious, thanks in great part to the rude and nefarious customer service the campground staff delivers, acting like they're doing you a favor. It's no wonder the Institute has been on a steadt nose dive in terms of quality and authenticity, having lost its holistic roots.
Housing accommodations still leave a lot to be desired, as it always has. But it becomes a concern when considering the astronomical prices charged for even the shortest retreat. I would not recommend to spend to spend the night here. Instead, you can either go camping nearby or get a superb room at any local hotel in Carmel.

Dear Tilasmi,
I have wanted to be apart of Esalen Institute for over 25 years... and have a chance this next month! I will be in a 'work study' program... which means I pay $3000 for full accomodations for 4 weeks but in turn must work (kitchen, house cleaning, gardening) for 25 hours per week. What constructive advice would give me... since you had such a horrible experience I would like to be aware of the cracks

I am thinking about going to the hot springs 1 am - 3 am session. I am nervous on driving on HIghway 1 that late at night. I found a hotel that is 28 minutes north of the institute. Will it be safe to drive?

i only drove during the day... it was like the view of a roller coaster on sections.... night time may be easier without a moon glow on the ocean showing the roller coaster ride... following the highway lines in the dark with your headlights seems just as tantalizing as the day drive by my imagination... wish i could go on that drive with you and enjoy the 1 am hot spring.... mmmmmm

Are the hot springs available during the day? Do we need a reservation? We are travelling from Australia.. is it worth it? Are they clean? 🙏🏽

they clean them daily...so yes clean... clothes optional... they are open 24/7 except during cleanings...usually alternated cleanings for the 3 so one is always open...WORTH THE TRIP

I am not on staff at Esalen, but I did stay there. I booked a higher priced private room and it was mold free from what I could tell. It wasn't fancy but it was comfortable with a beautiful view of the ocean. Esalen is a very special place!

I'd check the reviews for all the Air BNB's, Bed and Breakfasts etc in the area. The area is magical - there are possibilities to stay in unexpected places.
