We had a wonderful day with the Cal family, experiencing traditional dwellings, cooking, musical instruments, healing herbs and a fantastic lunch. We learned so much about Mayan cultural history, tried to help Anita grind corn for tortillas and cacao beans for chocolate drink. She's a pro! We helped her prepare traditional Mayan stew. Cal talked a bit about the history of his people, and later demonstrated traditional musical instruments. It was a really unusual hands on experience. I highly recommend this program to anyone interested in learning more about Mayan culture!

I highly recommend this tour! The host family was warm and welcoming and had such a depth of knowledge about Mayan culture and history. And bonus lunch was one of the best meals of our trip!

We spent the morning with Ms Anita and her daughter preparing a chicken Caldo (Mayan Chicken stew), hand made corn tortillas, and a drink made from fresh cacao beans. All the ingredients for the meal came from the family's property, right outside the kitchen where we cooked. We got to tour the farm, pick the fresh herbs, and learn where Recado (a ubiquitous Belzian spice) comes from. We made the soup, they let us do everything with guidance and assistance if needed. Then we learned how corn and cacao beans are prepared, and we had a go at grinding both on a traditional Mayan grinding stone, called a Ka'a in Quechi Maya. I have a much greater appreciation for making tortillas--its harder than it looks! The whole thing was extremely tasty and our hosts could not have been more warm, welcoming, and patient:-) This is a wonderful way to get to know Maya culture a bit better! I don't have any recommendations for how to improve the experience, it was great! You won't want to miss it! I have lots of photos, but unfortunately, Trip Advisor isn't letting me upload them for some reason.

This is an excellent and inspiring experience. We were taken through the cultural life of Mayan people and Anita and her family are keeping the culture alive with this short tour. Her son Christopher explained how the Mayans have traditionally used the forest to source everything - where nothing is wasted. Meanwhile Anita cooked our lunch and even allowed us to help to make the tortillas. It was all delicious.
Everything was professional, friendly, accessible and interesting . We loved it and highly recommend it to others. Thank you Anita and family. Julia

I messaged Anita and set up the tour myself. Anita provided great communication to find her place. My husband and I took the James Bus Line from Punta Gorda to Big Falls. It was roughly 45 minutes and $3bz per person one way. Upon arriving there, a sign pointed us in the direction to the building. Anita provided interesting information on the Mayan culture. We also were able to grind corn and make tortillas. A traditional lunch was prepared with a delicious cocoa drink. If you are looking for an educational experience at a reasonable cost, I would definitely recommend. Thanks again Anita!

wish the local ladies would have been able to explain the food to us... where it is from, how it is prepared, etc. The squash and the callaloo were my favorite. I think the "vegetarian" meal is bigger that the meat-eaters meal. People don't want us veg-heads to starve.

The was truly a rare behind the scenes experience. Our host Anita walked us through a working traditional Mayan thatched hut, explaining how tools and foods were used and prepared. Put on your anthropologist hat and enjoy!
And the food? Delicious !!!!!

In all honesty my wife enjoyed this more than I did. I started to get a little bored, but only because some of what Anita showed us we had already learned at Ixcacao. Still some new ground was covered and we made our own tortillas. Lunch was outstanding and we learned a lot about Mayan life. Her grandson is very entertaining as well.

On a day we could not be with our kids they visited the Living Mayan Experience together. Our kids are 10 - 17. They came back with many stories about this adventure. Lots of hands on experiences.

This was part of an excursion from Bocawina Rainforest Resort, and a highlight of my trip to Belize. Anita does a great job of showing the Maya way of life, including musical instruments, beds, cooking, and their use of natural (plant-based) medicine. This program got its start as a way to educate young students, but it is equally as educational to tourists! Grinding corn and making tortillas (that we actually ate!) was an incredible experience. We could learn a lot about staying healthy using plants as our medicine.
