Located in Karjat which is just 2.5hrs drive from Mumbai, the drive itself to the base of Kondana is beautiful especially in the monsoon. The walk from the base to the caves is just under an hour if you maintain a steady pace. The caves are decently maintained, the highlight being the waterfall that flows from above the caves is quite an amazing view. It has a well marked and simple trail. On your way up you will cross small streams and the views are picturesque. Get to the base a bit early as parking there can get crowded. It can get very humid so carry enough water. There is a river flowing at the base so you can take a lot of beautiful pictures down by the river too. Kids especially will love this trek.

It’s a good trek for 45 min each side. Start early ( by 10) so that you can be back by 12-12/30. Enjoyable , small , simple trek. As it was our first time , We took help of a local guide Ankush (95884 66223) who was too good. He stays near the starting point on trek and understands Hindi/ English .

Short hike, beautiful rock cut caves. Monsoons is when i visited this place. it was so green and full of oxygen that after coming down i could never smoke a cigarette again. Yes, I could just not smoke another cigarette after this trip. The heavy breathing and the oxygen rich ambience probably cleared my lungs and turned me into an absolute non smoker overnight, when i visited this place 15 years back. The freshly made local snacks in the clean mud huts at the foot of hillock housing this cave was to die for. Do visit this place if you are passing it.....should not take you more than an hour to climb up and down.

This is hidden in a nice way.
We had to take help from local to reach the caves from bottom of hill.
Only a few caves.
Was disappointed to find that budhha statue was damaged and no longer in caves. Stupa was also damaged may be due to rocks falling from above. Restoration work semmed to have started but no one was working When we visited.

The Kondana Caves are located in the small village of Kondana, 33 km north of Lonavala and 16 km northwest of Karla Caves. This cave group has 16 Buddhist caves. The caves were excavated in first century B.C. The construction on wooden pattern is notable.One can reach the cave by descending from Rajmachi village. During rainy season, one can enjoy the waterfall which originates from above the mountain which is mesmerizing to watch and enjoyy as well. The caves being very old are still in great condition.

Kondana caves are historical and protected by Archilogical Survey of India, as per board displayed at the site. One can reach from Mumbai either by own vehicle (as was done by us) or taking train/bus upto Karjat. Then take an autorickshaw (shared) to Kondivade village which is abt 10 km from Karjat.
From the base village trekking starts on easy nod and journey can be covered from 40 to 60 minutes, depending upon the group and visitors. Trekk is so easy that it can be done by 6-7 years kids. However, should be avoided by old aged. No water or shade is available in the trekking way. Waterfall is limited to rainy season only, but Cave visit should be avoided during sunny afternoon. Since it is trekking only, 5 stars are given, even without any infrastructure.

Konadana caves is historical place. It shows ancient lifestyle of Buddhist followers. Must visit place and good for one day picnic.

An easy and beautiful trek, this one is meant for those who want short treks. Trek starts from Kondivde village which is easily accessible by vehicle. Those coming by train from Karjat can take an auto to Kondivde village. From this village, its a 45 minute to 1 hour trek to reach the caves. A large part of the caves are in excellent condition even after 2000 years. There is a huge waterfall in one corner of the cave. You will come across many waterfalls on the way. Ideal short trek.

Had been to these caves long back ago for a trek. The trek was easy, but a little bit slippery. These rock cut caves, however were damaged due to an earthquake during the 1900's. The chaitya and the vihara can be visited. Above it, there is a mini waterfall. The other small caves was filled with water and infested with bats. These caves are mostly visited by trekkers. One will find garbage thrown on the other side of the caves. However, these caves have not been maintained. This is a good trekking place for those who would like to trek.

Not sure if the waterfall will be there in October. But considering that the monsoon is still active in Mumbai area now, there are higher chances of the waterfall being there in OCtober too. Try to visit in first week itself. IF you just want to trek then any month is good except summer months.

The best time to visit Kondana Caves is during the monsoon season. The nearest railway station is Karjat which is 15 kms. It takes around half an hour by auto rickshaw to reach the base village of Kondivade.

Not so difficult trek. Simple walking there and precaution should be some slippery area there. Very easy to reach there, jungle trek so you can take support from trees and rocks.

99% it should be safe. Village is quite nearby.
But nowadays in India anything is possible.
It is a relatively less frequented by tourists.
During my last visit there was no one around
Take a guide from the village
Go on Sunday when there should definitely be other tourists around.
Dont go late evening.
Ideally go in a group
