I read great recommendations for this area. It is a good place for little children to wade and play except that it is very rocky. When we were there (winter) there was barely any water in it. I didn't see anything alive in it but people (and there were many of them). There is no way you could snorkel or dive as it was too shallow. Any coral I saw was totally dead. The approach to it is fairly steep and rocky so some kind of shoes are necessary. Parking is hard to come by. Not sure if it is different under other conditions but was not at all as described when I was there.

Scenic spot along the laid-back North Shore of Oahu. Known as one of the best snorkeling spots on the island. We were visiting in March and the ocean was too rough to snorkel as is the case throughout the winter months. Different story during the summer and early Fall when conditions are said to be perfect.

We saw sooo many fishes and snorkeled until our hands were wrinkled and our lips were chapped. There’s bathrooms and a shower to rinse. A few little stands to get snacks and snorkel gear. Don’t need fins but recommend glasses and breathing tube. It’s not deep. Most places we’re at chest height and there’s plenty of shore for the little one to snorkel in. Theres just of couple of spots were it’s is about 10 feet deep but that’s out far edges. There’s no waves and fear of getting swept because it’s enclosed by a rocky barrier. A definite must do

Awesome views. Take lotsa pictures. Bring WATER SHOES and snorkel gear. Tons of fish!!! Make sure, when you get there, go straight and then make a right once you pass midway amf head out about 20 yards from the mouth. If you decide to immediately go to the right, you're going to have a really tough and painful time. So don't do that.

***Danger - very sharp rocks***

While the snorkelling is absolutely wonderful (this from a trip to Shark's Cove in March of 2023) and probably the best that you will see in such a small space of water, this review is about the surroundings. And a caution to all that go.

In the past 3 times that we visited Shark's Cove, we always parked in the parking lot to the north of the cove (and toilet/showers) and walked in along a trail straight to the head of the cove. Walking into the water, the first time, was over a sandy trail. The experience was punctuated by rocks in the water, that while noticeable, were not sharp. Just a nuisance. The water was rather shallow the last time we went. Though the further out you ventured, the deeper it got, but never crazy deep. The last time we went, the breadth and scope of the number of fish was insane. Suffice it to say, you will not be disappointed when it comes to seeing fish.

This review is to warn visitors of how sharp the rocks surrounding the cove really are. On this visit, we parked in the parking lot south of the cove, walked past a firestation to our east along the shoreline and then settled onto a chunk of beach that was due south of the cove. While my wife walked down to the water, scrambling over the rocks to get there, I went back to the car as I had forgotten to waterproof my keys. Having done so I came back to where our towels were, doffed my shirt and started the walk down to the water over the same rocks that she had traversed. While I was stepping from stone to stone (which is either volcanic or old broken up coral, likely the latter), a rock I stepped on moved. I lost my balance and fell. When I got up, I found a 6 inch gash just under my right patella that looked like someone had sliced me with a filleting knife practically to the bone.

I clamped the wound down with my hand. A nice Japanese lady gave me a pile of napkins to quelch the bleeding. And I called over to my wife who helped me hobble over to the fire station. The guys there were awesome and bandaged me up enough so I could drive to Kahuku hospital, 20 mins north of Shark's Cove. Luckily, business was slow, and a fabulous ER doctor had me patched up within the hour. He said that I was a lucky one. That while I had been sliced open for a 23 stitch suture job (which was fantastic), it had just missed the lower patellar tendon, the one that attaches to my shin and allows me to extend my leg. The rocks he said, have kept his hospital going with steady business. The craziest of which are people that ignore the "Do not climb on rock wall" signs and get washed over and down ONTO these very same rocks. Imagine what happened to me. All over someone's body as they get tossed onto not only hard rock, but very sharp rock.

So in the end, while Shark's Cove is absolutely FABULOUS for snorkelling, this visit was a terrible one.

Recommendations: Walk on sand only to where the sand meets the water. There is a way. Take shortcuts over the rocks at your own peril. Wear water shoes at a minimum, or Keens sandals if you really want good foot protection, as snorkelling fins are a bit too much for this confined area.

The fish are amazing.

As for the rocks surrounding the cove, they have my new found respect.

Ouch!!! It was painful walking over all those small rocks to get to the water and then making your way through some large rocks to find an open access area in the water, but once you do, you're in for a treat.
My husband and I are snorkel junkies, and this is one of the best spots we've ever snorkeled, and believe me that's saying a lot. It set the bar really high. We saw sooo many schools of fish and even different species of fish swimming together in large schools flitting from one spot to the next. We even were lucky enough to see a turtle both times we went. Not much coral to speak of though, Shark's Cove is all about the fish. The visibility of the water is pretty good and there's a large area to explore. Getting out is as painful as getting in, but it's worth it.

It was tricky to get in over the rocks so I wish I had checked out other entry points. I saw so many different fish and should have brought a camera or waterproof phone case. The parking is free and a shower and bathroom are available too!

What an amazing snorkeling experience!
We arrived super early to secure a parking spot- we had a giant area just to ourselves for the longest time!
Absolutely stunning amounts of sea life- it was almost unreal.
Bring water shoes for the tide pool areas- flippers would not be ideal unless your floating around in the deeper areas.
We visited the food trucks across the street afterward. It was still early so we didn’t have to wait in line!
Definitely recommend a visit. What a beautiful place.
