Nice place but can become crowded. Water is very shallow in places making it challenging to swim around without scraping your knee or other body parts.
Still, nice. Has a public washroom with changing area.
I would say this would be a wonderful place for snorkeling beginners and young children. Just make sure that you bring along some aqua shoes. There are many sharp rocks that are quite unavoidable.

Pros: Not a big area, so can easily all be seen and thoroughly explored within 2 hours. The natural cove helps shield you from the big waves, even in the winter season. You'll see alot of cool sea life, including some big fish and massive schools of fish. You'll also see coral, sea urchins, and sea pickles. Probably the calmest place to go for starters.
Cons: No sea turtles seen unfortunately both times :(. Be super careful. These rocks are shark, and sea urchins are everywhere in the coral and rock crevices. Some dad was letting his daughter walk on the rocks in the middle, and i winced because I had personally seen how many urchins were below her. There are about 2 paths to get in, but both are really hard to navigate. I fell twice onto the rocks and got some gnarly bruises on my arm and abdomen (luckily didn't break skin).
Tip: get there early. I'm talking between 8-10am. If you don't, the parking lot will fill up completely by 12, and there will literally be a line. Also, more divers = more hazards, because they can block your path forcing you to take a shallow route, which is quite nerve-wracking looking down at the sea urchins only inches below you.
If you get there early, take extra extra caution getting in and out, bring a waterproof camera, then you are guaranteed to have a good time and see more fish species that you can keep track of!

Considered among the top free snorkeling areas in Oahu. Yes, you should wear a minimum of water shoes, as some of the coral is sharp and all are uneven. Fins will help the further out you go. When we went there were a decent amount of fish - not an overwhelming amount, and definitely not ten. Even when the waves on the North Shore are strong, this protected area is generally calmer. That being said, we did get hit with a wave that went over the natural breakwaters and pushed all off our feet. You could stand, walk, and waddle through most of it, but be prepared to swim if a wave makes it over. The parking lot is elongated compared to Three Tables a beach over, probably because this place gets busier. They don't usually have a lifeguard, but that particular day they had one in her truck, and a fire department's McDonell Douglas MD500 NOTAR taking off and flying back and forth. There's a place to rent snorkeing gear and life vest across the street if need be.

This is personally my all time favorite beach that I’ve visited so far! Definitely for people who like to snorkel and I imagine would be good for young children to swim as most of the beach is very shallow. Must bring water shoes! Access to this beach could be tricky without it, there’s lots of sharp rocks! Make sure you’ve got sun protection as well! There’s a bathroom and an outdoor shower to rinse yourself and snorkel gear. Beautiful sunsets. Close to lots of food options including a grocery store if you’ve got a family and you’re on a budget grab some food from the deli instead of visiting the food trucks. There’s places that are scuba accessible outside the cove. I also recommend swimming outside the cove if you wanna see more marine life and are a confident swimmer. Love this place!

Went here this past week. Arrived before 10am and parking wasn't an issue. Couple of things to note. Water shoes are a must, it's not only rocky but very sharp as well. If your bringing young kids there is a tide pool area which is great for them. If they are going into the cove, they need a life vest. The cove itself is large and deep and you should be aware not to leave the cove or you are in open waters and the current can be an issue. If you stay in the cove you will be fine, however some areas have high rocks and you need to navigate them. Plenty of fish to see and sea turtles. Great place across the street to rent gear.

Really cool spot to snorkel! Saw a few basic, a few exotic fish, and one sea turtle which made the spot for me. Parking is limited but there's lots of space on the side of the road if you walk a bit further. Overall, there's not a ton of unique fish and it can be kind of shallow at times, but for it being free and easy to get to, I would recommend.

Parking is rough. Getting to the pools is a bit of a trek. The rocks are sharp and not easy to traverse. Wouldn't bring little ones. Once we made it, it was a great snorkeling experience. Make sure you sunscreen well.

Beautiful for snorkeling. When we were there, the water was very calm, no waves.
We've seen a lot of different fish. Water shoes are essential, especially for children.
There are showers, a changing room and toilets. Parking is a bit difficult if you are late (after 10am, like us). We got a parking ticket even though we parked in a side street where you were not obviously allowed to park, $35 souvenir.

Great place to scuba and snorkel. Abundant sea life including turtles and for the scuba diver underwater caves and lots of fish. At times preferable to the Hanuama Bay and is FREE. Parking can be crazy, so get there early and preferable not on weekends.

So cool!! Calm waters, protected from the open ocean. No sharks. I saw about a dozen different types of fish. I loved that there was a shower do we could change into other clothes for the rest of the day.

No, it is not safe in the winter months. We were snorkelling there on February 18, enjoying the calm waters of the tidal pool, when 3 massive waves rolled into the area and smashed us into the lava rocks, which are scattered throughout the water. I was bruised up quite badly. We saw one girl whose entire stomach area was cut up and bleeding. Don’t be fooled by the seemingly calm waters!

Where is the best snorkeling on Oahu for families ? Kids are 17,11, and 9 . Thanks :)

We are headed to Sharks Cove next week. Is there a place to change clothes? We will be driving the North Coast all day and are hoping to change into swimsuits there!
撰写日期:2019年9月26日
Yes there are bathrooms right at the cove. And there are good food trucks and places to rent snorkel gear across the street.

Hello, we are planning a trip to the north shore first week of April and I’m wondering if we will be able to snorkel or would the waters be too cold or rough? I have young children also.
撰写日期:2019年2月9日
I would definitely recommend some long sleeve rash-guard shirts. 72 degree water and 10-15 mph wind can make for some shivers! They're readily available on Amazon and are affordable. They keep you warm, and keep the wind/sunburn at bay. Water shoes are A MUST along the north shore.
Also, I forgot to mention earlier to check the tide charts and go at low and or slack tide for the safest waves/currents. Shark's Cove is very protected but can experience strong currents in places as the tide comes in.

Can you visit any time to go tide pooling, or is that only in the morning?
撰写日期:2018年9月19日
Any time - the tide on Oahu barely changes all day. High and low tide are pretty much the same thing.

What kind of snorkel gear do you need? I plan on buying some before my trip, and want to know what essentials I should buy.
撰写日期:2017年2月12日
Mask, snorkel and some water shoes(hard sole). Some kind of gloves for hand protection is not a bad idea either.

What is the difference in water, wave conditions by season?
How deep is the water in the Cove? Is it safe for children & non-swimmers?
撰写日期:2015年12月27日
I know this late for your questions but I think they are really good ones so of course I think they should be addressed. As far as wave and water conditions they are calm though there are swells in November. There are several websites that address wave conditions. As for the name and whether it is safe for little ones, the name is nothing to worry about. There are no sharks. The water is very shallow, warm and sandy. We had the babies in the water at six months.
