Walk round the castle embankments in the early evening before the Sun went down. The views were great and the walking quite easy as we went out to the castle and walked round the old Iron Age embankments that were once part of the defence for the hilltop fort . Well worth a visit. brilliant

The single track lane which leads to this very good country park can be slightly tricky as cars come belting towards you.
Once there, the views are evident immediately.
We walked through the park where park were kite flying due to the high winds...this park is 900 feet above sea level.
We found the old castle mounts at the bottom of the car park which was good for a sit down and admire the views.
A nice little country park situated in the middle of nowhere.
Visited 8th August 2020.

Needing to get out of Swindon for some fresh air, took the wife for a walk up at Barbury Castle Country Park near Wroughton, as i'd heard that there was a crop circle in the fields below.
Lots of free parking and easy to social distance during the week, we found a free bench for a picnic.
Great views out to Swindon, and we found a pretty crop circle directly below the main car park to admire.........

Lane leading up (and up..) is single track and was quite busy today (Sunday). Large car park with toilets. We found it easily, and it's clearly marked from the main road. Walk to fort is via a field and is muddy in places, so be warned! Views are lovely, but it was very cold and windy, so glad we wrapped up.

Admittedly it was a lovely day when we visited with light breeze and hardly a cloud. The elevation of the site allows terrific views over vast areas of Wiltshire and beyond and you can see other hill forts in the distance. Walks around the castle and out into the surrounding countryside are very good and easy.

Saw lots of wildlife too including red kites, hare, lapwing, yellowhammers and lots more.

Main car park is sizeable and reached via a poorly maintained road. There are toilets by the car park but they are really disgusting, foul smelling, filthy and badly damaged. It’s shocking that such facilities open to the public are allowed to deteriorate so badly, Plan your visit not to use them!

I and my husband and another couple had a guided tour from one of the Rangers who work for Swindon Borough Council, a very well-informed man who has done his own research although not a trained archaeologist. Only downside is that there is no longer a cafe on this site. There is a toilet block. Sheep graze here so I think dogs should be kept on a lead. Amazing views over Wiltshire. Interesting recent history, e.g. US troops who trained here in WWII. Very exposed and windy. Good for flying kites?

As many have stated it’s not the easiest to locate signage is a little lacking, however once here there is ample parking. A large area for picnics in the car park vicinity also is handy for the less mobile who will still take advantage of the stunning views of such a vantage point. The walk to the fort itself is some 400 metres at most and flat although uneven ground through fields. The hill fort is a brilliant example and of a very large scale, many people picnic within the fort itself. There are plenty of dog walkers everywhere (although be advised that sheep roam freely throughout the area), this attraction seems great for most ages from young kids to teenagers (just challenge them to run down and up between the forts defences, hilarious) to the more mobile older ones among us. Sadly especially as the wether turns inclement I would suggest wheel chair users are not likely to be able to venture outside the car park areas due to the terrain.
On windy days I would go so far as to suggest this could even be classed as a bit of a workout as far as walks go but nevertheless well worth a visit and great free place to bring the kids to run off some energy.
On this particular visit however I have one complaint, some people like to ruin things for all, a family with fairly young children (6-8 at a quests) had brought drones with them which they were flying with little control and no concern for other users. This married with their complete disregard for those around them hence the need to shout constantly from all members of the family, left the tranquil surroundings in want. That being said we can hope they don’t return. All other groups were there to enjoy the atmosphere and area for what it is a historical land mark with views in every direction including to the skies.

Carpark signage is a bit vague but as we'd already checked it's location on Google. Big carpark with toilets and picnic tables. The walk to the fort is smooth across a well grazed field with sheep. Dogs are allowed on leads. Its a short walk to the fort and the sheer size is amazing. The once steeper ditches are reduced now but still steep all the way around. With 360°views makes this lovely place to visitors.
Our only concern was upon returning to carpark a family with friends arrived with a hoard of children and drone. I own a drone and have insurance. But watching these kiddies flying their drone erratically around the parked cars and people is no joke, parents didnt seem bothered about it.
