Pretty old building that we passed on way to Sydney Tower. Located opposite Hyde park. Loved the wrought iron gates. Didn’t go inside though

We had heard good stuff but were not impressed with harsh attitude. Have they had probs here? I guess so. We will not go back, not a good vibe from staff who let you in building.

I really liked this place, at first. The sermon was good, from the Rabbi. And I saw lots of beautiful artwork and physical surroundings.
But the security guards are aggressive, they tried to force my group to wait outside even though we had called beforehand. The guard told us "I don't care," and said to leave. Huh, we had right to be there but they didn't want us there?

The synagogue is beautiful inside and the location in downtown Sydney makes for an excellent opportunity for visitors. However, the people who run security for the synagogue are incompetent and somewhat bizarre, it is as if you are in the West Bank. Having recently visited several other religious institutions around the world, this ineptitude made for a uniquely disturbing experience: there is no concern for you (even if they know you are Jewish), security employees will order you to leave the area without blinking an eyelid. What was truly surprising is that the security staff refused to let me in even though I had followed all of the instructions for visitors, including bringing my passport with me. I even handed the staff my cellphone so they could view my WhatsApp page. Rabbi Benjamin Elton, the Senior Rabbi, had invited me for a tour that day on his personal WhatsApp account, but the security personnel still refused to allow me in (I guess they outrank the head of the congregation?).
I only succeeded in, eventually, getting a tour with Rabbi Elton by extreme persistence on my part. Before entering the building, I told the Senior Rabbi that I had been mistreated and that such arbitrary and insensitive security measures actually make the synagogue less safe (tending to alienate people who would ordinarily support the institution). I was then given a (quick) tour of the sanctuary, without being able to take photos, and spoke to the Rabbi briefly about the synagogue’s role in Australia.

This is a large heritage listed synagogue. It was built from 1874 to 1879 and built to unite two Jewish congregations in Sydney which worshipped at the time inn synagogues in York Street and Macquarie Street Sydney. It has elements of Byzantine style and Gothic characteristics. It is on the State Heritage Register

If you happen to be in the neighborhood on a day when they are giving tours (thursdays a noon, first and third tuesday of the month at noon), it is worth stepping into this beautiful and historic building to learn about the history of Jews in Australia and see the architectural details . They provide an interesting tour and the interior of the building is worth seeing.

Enjoyed seeing the inside of the synagogue and learning about the growth of the jewish community. The film was good in parts and explained Judaism for those who knew little about it. However after an hour of sitting and listening to many personal stories there was still not tour so I left. I feel the chat should be shorter and more touring of the synagogue with less personal reflection.

The option of seeing inside was not available but the exterior is worth a look. The synagogue was built to unite two Jewish communities in Sydney between 1874 and 1878 ans is now a heritage listed building.
