The statue is impressive and imposing and a fitting location for someone who foundered the University of Adelaide. Arriving in Australia in 1840 from Scotland, Hughes farmed sheep and found copper and other minerals and became rich, was knighted , became a public benefactor; hence the nice statue. This strip of North Terrace is pleasant with many good statues.

Sir Walter (1803-1887) was born in Scotland. After spending some time as a merchant seaman and then master of his own vessel he emigrated to South Australia in 1840. He began purchasing pastoral land and subsequently deposits of copper were found on this land resulting in two large copper mines beginning operations and Hughes becoming a very wealthy man.

In 1872 Hughes offered an endowment of £20,000 for the establishment of the University of Adelaide. He was the University’s first donor. Hughes subsequently returned to England in 1873 where he died.

The impressive bronze statue shows Sir Walter sitting formally in a carved armchair with his hands resting on his knees. The bronze was sculpted by Englishman Francis Williamson. It sits atop a massive pedestal of Murray Bridge red granite and is located outside of the front gates to the University of Adelaide in North Terrace. The statue was unveiled in 1906.

南オーストラリア州立美術館の東側の広場に座っていました。アデレード大学と南オーストラリア大学の建物の区分けが分かりにくかったのですが、場所としてはアデレード大学の建物の前が正確な表現だと思います。

This is a plain sitting figure station, located in the university campus, just next to Art Gallery of South Australia.

Walking through the University and museums area along the North Terrace you will pass many statues and monuments. This one is powerful, imposing and classical in its design. The life story of the depicted prominent man can be googled and it is of great local importance since Sir Walter Hughes fortune contributed to the development of the university in Adelaide.

Walter Watson Hughes lived in Scotland. He was an apprentice cooper. Then he explored Calcutta where he bought the brig Hero trading in opium around the Indian Ocean and China Sea for 14 years.

When he arrived in South Australia in 1840 Hughes bought rural properties, farming sheep in the Mid North and on Yorke Peninsula.

Hughes was interested in mineralogy and was convinced that mineral reserves could be found on Yorke Peninsula. His shepherds were instructed to keep an eye out for evidence of deposits.

One, James Boor, reported a noticed of green rocks on the property near Wallaroo in 1859. Hughes established a copper mine there the following year and became the largest shareholder in the Wallaroo Mine Co.

In 1861 another shepherd, Patrick Ryan, found copper on Hughes Moonta property. Walter became quite wealthy.

Sir Walter Watson Hughes was also one of the founders of the University of Adelaide. He offered £20 000 to the University. Later on, he founded the chairs of Classics and literature, as well as mental and moral philosophy.

He might have been rich, but he also helped the people of Adelaide.
