The old railway line went under the High Street at Harp Road. The Rail Trail that replaced it now surfaces to cross the road. There is a bus interchange at this point and a number of food shops nearby. I was interested in the shady path North and West of High Street and the garden on the corner.

One of many trains in south east Mel;bopurnme. This one starts around Warrigul Rd where it splits from Gardiners Creek Trail.
Essentially it follows (to commence with) an obsolete steam rail line until it reached Alamain Railway station. At this stage it becomes largely a footpath along the electrified train line.
The paths themselves are well maintained and are shared with cyclists
It is my aim to keep walking sections until I reach Melnbourne. I am looking forward to the Camberwell part of the trip where once again it reverts to na disused rail line

The Outer Circle Railway was intended to connect railway lines going in to Melbourne, carrying goods and passengers. As it turned out, the freight was limited, as were the passengers and the line was not commercially viable. These days, you can hike from East Camberwell to Fairfield on the closed line. The distance is 7.2 km (4.5 miles) along easy gradients. The trip will take around 2.5 hours. The Outer Circle line will reveal a side of Melbourne that is rarely seen these days.

Today I walked a section of the Trail in Ashburton. This is next to the Alamein Railway Line, which is a remnant of the original Outer Circle Railway Line. Here the path varies in width and in parts is constrained by old trees, narrow and on a slope. Some parks can be found along the way, too. The Ferndale Trail branches off here, to join the Gardiner's Creek Trail 3km away.

The Melbourne suburban rail and tram systems are radial, that is, they spread from the centre of the city to the suburbs. It must have seemed like a good idea to connect them with an outer circle railway. Construction began in 1888, supervised by the young John Monash, later a war hero, said to be "the greatest ever Australian." The Outer Circle Railway commenced in Oakleigh and went on to Fairfield Park. Unfortunately, the line was not a success. Most of the areas the Outer Circle Railway traversed were not developed and passengers were few. Like many other good ideas, it turned out to be useful, but in an unexpected way -- as a linear park. Every time I cross the Outer Circle Railway, I wonder: what might have been?

Today I explored the rail trail from the Chandler Highway Bridge in Alphington and headed South-east to Kew. It is a great trail, through many parks. It can be a little hilly, but the quality of the path is good.

Also known as Anniversary Trail
Pretty and off road rail trail that runs all the way from Kew to the Scotchmans Trail and Gardiner Creek trails at Malvern Public Gold Course.
You could actually start in Fairfield and the Main Yarra Trail and than head under Eastern Freeway at Willsmere Park
Along the way are plenty of drink fountains,toilets and even bike repair stations.
If you get tired the trail is connected to numerous tram lines and train stations.
Past East Camberwell Station it gets a little bit confusing but still well worth continuing.

Over the years I have walked and cycled the full length of this Trail. It has much history to reveal (well signposted) and many pleasant places to stop for playgrounds, picnics, and cafes (on major cross roads, of which there are many). Today I started out in Kew (Harp Road) and headed South to Deepdene (Whitehorse Road), On this stretch the grades are even, trees fringe the Trail and there are cafes at the end of this section.

Today I walked the Anniversary trail between Camberwell High School (near Riversdale Station) to Canterbury Road (through Boroondara Park). The walk is fairly flat, as it was once a railway line and passes through stands of huge old Red Gum trees. Canterbury Road offers food and drink opportunities, while Boroondara park has a large children's playground.

A very pleasant track through delightful suburbs. Interesting signage of historic station sites. Beware the odd swooping magpie in spring. Clever cyclists use the trail to avoid busy roads when commuting.
