Sir John Winthrop Hackett chaired the Royal Commission that recommended the creation of the University of Western Australia (UWA). UWA is known as one of Australia's eight "sandstone universities." Winthrop Hackett, as he was known, was a generous benefactor to the new university. The central feature of the campus, Winthrop Hall, was named in his honour. For many students, their last memory of UWA is staring at the elaborate ceiling of Winthrop Hall as they await the call to graduate.

John Winthrop Hackett was a promoter of the University of Western Australia.(UWA). It's almost impossible to attend and not enter Winthrop Hall. It's imposing and well decorated -- well worth a visit.

The hall is a magnificent piece of architecture, built on the university campus next to lawns and pond. It is the site of Graduation Ceremonies, Banquets, concerts and a range of events. It is possible to visit to see the beautiful foyer, organ, and spectacular ceiling and fixtures. It is near the highway, so easy to see.

No doubt Winthrop hall is the most eye-catching building on the University of Western Australia campus. Some reviewers have likened it to Italian style architecture in Tuscany, perhaps also because of the shape of the tower and the green Mediterranean-like surroundings with cypress trees and pond. According to Wikipedia the style is Romanesque Revival which indeed at the time of its construction in 1932 was very popular in Britain, the USA and Canada. Revival features are best visible in the Western section of the building (e.g. the gate).
It is some 4 km (2.5 miles) SW from downtown Perth along the Swan rivershore. A pleasant walk or bicycle ride, though even students go to campus by car!

This unexpectedly lovely Italian-style hall is the venue for the University of Western Australia's graduation ceremonies and exams. It is a grand building in a campus with beautiful grounds and must be an inspirational place to study. We attended a choral concert in the hall. The stage was basically a raised square platform in the middle of the hall. I don't know if this is a permanent fixture, but the choir (from Estonia) arranged itself sitting around the edges of the stage, facing inwards. This meant that I could only see the face of one of the singers, a very strange set-up! Maybe this is how that particular choir chooses to present themselves, but it could be that the setting gave the choir a real challenge, as the audience was sitting all around them. The hall could have done better by introducing a queuing system too, as it was a bit of a bun fight to get in and find seats which are not allocated. Apparently, it is always like this at concerts there. My advice is to take your camera, arrive in time to take some photos around the campus, but definitely arrive in plenty time to be near the front of the crowds! If you are using a GPS, take care, as it is not located at 35 Stirling Highway! I am not the first to have gone wrong with this address, but had luckily seen the building from Stirling Highway and just headed towards it.

Winthrop Hall is located right at the center of the beautiful University of Western Australia campus. This building is perhaps the most prominent landmark of the UWA campus. With its "Campanile" (clocktower) it resembles prominent buildings in the Tuscany region in Italy such as the town hall in Florence. A row of cypress trees, reflected in the adjacent pool, adds to this impression. Winthrop Hall is particularly beautiful when illuminated at dawn or at night.

Postcard perfect gardens. Intricate sandstone, colourful stained glass and shiny organ pipes. Every UWA graduate knows Winthrop Hall from undergraduate exams to graduation.Very few are aware of the dungeon beneath where desks and chairs are stored.

It's certainly an icon with character, this 90 year old stone hallway. The beautiful majestic structure is definitely the highlight of UWA and if you time it right you can see it from inside too, as various events are held during the year inside. We visited during a book fair and it was great but even from the outside it is nice to wander around. Almost all promotional pictures of the uni feature Winthrop Hall because of it's classic look. While you're on the campus you can wander through some leafy gardens and soak in the atmosphere, and the scenic Matilda Bay is close by too. There are lots of bus stops on Stirling Hwy alongside the uni, which travel to/from the city. We really liked Winthrop Hall.

This hall at the University of Western Australia reminds me of Italy with its long pool at the front - it has a regal air and you can feel the history of hundreds of scholars walking proudly to graduation.
