The Swan River Colony was founded in 1829. The Old Court House, built in 1836, is the oldest surviving building in Perth, the state capital of Western Australia. The Museum aims to promote understanding of the law, the legal system and the legal profession. The Museum has audio-visual displays. THe Museum is located between Stirling Gardens and Supreme Court Gardens, off Barrack St.

The Swan River Colony was founded in 1829. The new colony was governed by Capt. James Stirling RN. To survive this colony needed, above all, justice. The Old Court House was built in 1836-37. It is the oldest surviving pioneering building in the State of Western Australia. It has had various judicial functions, including the State Arbitration Court and the Offices of the Law Society. This marvellous old building hasn't altered much since the early days of Western Australia.

This is only a small museum but very informative and well laid out. Audio guides are also available. You don't have to be interested in the law or legal matters to enjoy what's on offer. Basically describes how the settlers imposed European law on the indiginous people's.

Thought a trip to see the Old Court Museum would be interesting and it was. Not only explaining the layourpt and roles within the court system, but there’s also the history of the development of the law in Australia. The staff also run various court room experiences which sound really exciting. They obviously put a lot of effort into these events. Well spent hour.

The Old Court House Law Museum was small, still I learned a lot about the judicial history.

There were conflicts between the Europeans and the Aboriginals.

We used audios, but I have problems hearing it. Still there was enough written explanations that helped me understand.

Worthwhile to see!

A little gem of a museum. Well worth a visit. I spent a pleasant hour looking around everything and listening to their audio description of stories from its past. Interesting displays regarding its history and about the stolen generation.

Located right beside the long rectangle-shaped Supreme Court of Western Australia (on St. Georges Terrace near the corner with Barrack St.), this old courthouse will give you a glimpse (but a "fairly-comprehensive" one really) of the judicial history of Western Australia with the main focus being "the part" at the early period of the British settlement (about the mid-1800's) which you can read quite a bit about on these big info displays. Walking through the rooms, I learned: about the first Chief Justice of WA, how the native people adjusted or adapted to the British laws (as the laws here were like "virtually as such" in those days), how women gradually made progress as the judicial system evolved and new laws were enacted over time (with a "timeline" for such laws on one info display); and yes among the things I learned was actually some "small but interesting" fact that this courthouse doubled as a children's school who had to be like especially quiet during court sessions.

And here, not just reading up the historical stuff inside this museum, you'll also get to enjoy the "beautiful grounds" outside (I only got to enjoy the area right in front of the Supreme Court with nice lawns & some flower patches on a "cold & rainy" day, but there are also Stirling Gardens on the far side of the grounds & more of the gardens behind that long building). Also, just directly across St. Georges Terrace from the Supreme Court grounds is the red-brick St. George's Cathedral "quite attractive" to look at.

The Old Law Museum, situated adjacent to the Supreme Court in Perth's iconic Stirling Gardens, promised and delivered an enduring and poignant experience. The oldest human-built structure in Perth (built in 1836) that served not only as a court but also a community hall and meeting place, the space engenders echoes of the past while also retaining a contemporary feeling. Wonderfully respectful exhibitions that pay homage to both Indigenous and non-Indigenous groups and histories, a visit to the Law Museum is not to be missed. Staff and volunteers efficient, knowledgeable, and courteous.

I stumbled upon this museum today and was pleasantly surprised. It was a very thought provoking and emotional place in particular when listening to the stories of the indigenous people involved in the stolen generations and the laws imposed which impacted on them most of all. If in Perth, I would recommend you visit this museum.
