Sadly closed for good ... These guys did an amazing job for a decade fighting local bureaucracy, vandals and the challenges of operating on a hydro river.

The landscape is so nice and also the foods. There is also a guide along and introduced the history of bridges and some of them were a surprise to me

Relaxing, informative, friendly staff, lunch food quality was really good - we would recommend this cruise and want to do it again in a different direction on the river.

We had a very relaxing and pleasant time on the dinner cruise; from the beginning the staff made us feel welcomed and special.
The meals were very flavoursome, filling, and had a good-size servings of vegetables and potatoes to class it as a real dinner (not simply a meat course with a few token bits of veg & potato masquerading as a garden sculpture).
The staff were always cheerful and worked to ensure we enjoyed ourselves and received best value for money. It was one of the best dining-out experiences we've had in recent years.
(If you aren't gifted a voucher, I suggest that you book online for best value.)

Absolutely loved the entire experience. What an amazing idea ... a floating Café that doubles as a River Cruise. Very busy on the day we cruised from the new City Jetty but the crew coped admirably. Great food despite having such a small Galley space and entertaining commentary from the Skipper who gave us plenty of time to chat amongst ourselves during the trip.

Very few menu options as half sold out. Very rude person in cafe. Was not told how this works went up to pay got told that they would come to us in a very rude manner was so upset that wanted to get off and go home. Was meant to be a nice anniversary gift but made to feel embarrassed and felt stupid. Apart from that the views were amazing.

I guess after nine and a half years we knew we would finally receive a 1/5 review. I am glad that you at least found the views amazing. I was Skippering on the cruise you were on and yes, Chef was a little 'short' and I apologize sincerely for that however she was in the middle of preparing Lunch meals, with gloves on and was not in the position to take a payment for your tab half-way through the cruise. As I recall, there was only one meal option sold out as several tables ordered the same item. This can happen in frequently in Cafes as Public Holidays put a strain on provisioning.

A floating cafe river cruise! Entertainment from the Skippers commentary, delicious cafe food onboard and lots of stuff to look at. Would recommend.

The trip was amazing the atmosphere was inviting and the seating was comfortable. A trip down the mighty Waikato River is something that I will forever cherish.
However; the skipper of the vessel has a voice that greats on you and interrupts pleasant and polite conversation. He references points of New Zealand history filled with pro colonialist ideals and completely disregards the cultural sensitivity of the indigenous people.
We enjoyed a 90 minute cruise up & down the river; we had to wait 70 minutes for our food to be served after we ordered it.
This was as a result of understaffing as the young leaders who served us tried to do their very best!

Hi there,
I am sorry that your experience wasn't the best it could be. We have several rostered Skippers on the vessel so I am not sure who you are referring to however as we run a floating Cafe, it is a difficult balance between trying to provide an historically accurate commentary of the region and it's river ... then leave people with enough 'space' to chat and enjoy a meal. I am also sorry about the wait for food. We run the same crewing levels all year however we are busier in Summer and that could also have contributed to the wait. 70-minutes is a long time to wait and definitely not how we like to do things.

I think 30 comfortably but for a 21st function maybe up to 50 people. You would need to check this is approximately and a rough estimate. So ring them to see for sure try Darren Mills/Martyn Todd Waikato Explorer Ltd 0800 139 756 or cell 0272 397 567. They often sell about 9 tables in the weekends and i can't remember if they seat 4 or 6 people to a table.

Hi there,
Thanks for your positive review on the Waikato River Explorer review page however it seems you are reviewing a walk alongside the Waikato riverbank rather than a river cruise which is what we do.
As far as I am aware, The Waikato River itself doesn't have a review page.

Sorry Darren I have just remedied myself by answering someone else's question and to get in touch with you. We went the upstream run towards mystery Creek so that is why I was describing our commentary and what we saw.

Hi there, thanks for contacting the Waikato River Explorer. We operate Scenic Cruises on the Waikato River weekly each Thursday - Sunday. Prices: $26 Adults, $21 Seniors, $13 Children 5-14yrs Under 5s free and $89 for a Family Pass. Cafe food is available and there is a FULLY LICENSED BAR. Bookings are essential either on our website, see the team at the Hamilton Gardens Information Centre or one of the many iSites around the Waikato. For larger groups we offer catered options and these can be also viewed on our website under Group Charters in the lefthand menu bar. (Prices valid until 30.3.2015)
