Called to have a look through the Art Museum. Very friendly and helpful people there and the premises are excellent. The art on display, apart from a few pieces, were not to my taste - but this type of museum is definitely one for the aficionado rather than a peasant like me! I can appreciate the care and skill in each piece, but as art it just didn't meet my style - others in our party were more impressed - so guess it's all in the eye of the beholder. However, the premises are inviting, very well laid out, and the people are excellent - I'd recommend

Varied, really interesting, high quality exhibitions currently on display which will provide satisfying viewing for almost all visitors. Particularly impressed by the 'handcrafts' display, very stylish and interesting work by many artisats

Do check the museums website — I went for the “Anthems of Belonging” exhibit, ends 22 March — 5 ‘families’ filmed in their living spaces singing composed ‘family’ anthems.
Brilliant idea and well executed.
I was also pleasantly surprised by the NZ limited edition records (music) exhibit — the graphics of the records and record covers and the music itself (ends 7 June) — and also the weaving and pottery exhibits. Amazing to me that a small museum produces a diversity of cutting edge exhibits that are viewable on the same day, not spaced over a couple of years.

This museum is probably not on your usual bucker list for Wellington but deserves a visit. The space is modern and quite open. They usually have interesting exhibitions and a really nice museum shop not to mention their coffee shop which is worth a try!!!!

The bare facts are that the walls are basically bare - that is the naked truth of the matter. Half was closed and the other half almost empty - if you want to venture outside the city then go to Pataka where there are vibrant and exciting exhibitions - what has happened to the Dowse as it used to be a place to visit regularly but now I wont bother going unless I am in the Hutt. Most disappointing. The cafe looked full of locals enjoying their brunch so maybe go for a coffee if in the area but don't expect to be wowed by the art. I would add a photo but a bare wall isn't that exciting.

As you say our upstairs galleries were closed for refurbishment and to install two new shows, Making Conversation and AlI want to be. All of our galleries are now open and we hope you will visit us next time you are in the Hutt.

Whenever you have time and love art, don't forget to go to this place, you will see interesting art, a great ambience, friendly staff and when your feet are tired from going around, step into the coffee shop (when it is warm you can sit outside) and enjoy the food or really good coffee and cakes. I would not like to miss this place!!

This venue sports some very fantastic art and the building alone is a lovely thing to look at.
The pieces on display are always well thought out and the display always show cases the pieces.
Cafe that is attached does killer hot chocolates.

The Dowse is a local (modern) art museum that is situated in Lower Hutt, NOT in Wellington.
We saw an interesting exhibition on NZ bathing costumes of the past.
Really excellent museum cafe that was to close down - maybe it's not?!

Thanks for the positive review. Like you say, we are a proudly Lower Hutt museum. We had a change in cafe tenants a little while ago and are loving having Bellbird Eatery here to keep us well fed and caffeinated.

Some interesting exhibits. Enjoyed it since it was free and we were already in Lower Hutt. Wouldn't go out of my way to visit unless there is an installation that catches your attention. Right on the bus line so it's easy to access.

Les expos cchangent tout le temps, mais ce musée a un excellent curateur. cela donne une bonne impression de l'art moderne NZ. Je trouve que les expos sont meilleurs que dans la section art m oderne de TePapa ou que la city gallery
