Not far from Mt. Cook Village is a short hike to an overlook of Tasman Glacier. A very nice hike, though mostly uphill via nicely maintained stairs.

After 200+ stairs, we reached the top and an amazing view. We were encouraged going up the stairs by those coming down. I’m 65yrs+ … I made it up…well worth the view.

You can walk up to the edge from a car park (lots of steps) or walk from the same car park down to the river view where you can also see the glacier in the distance.
Or you can go by boat through arctic explorers (in The Hermitage). The boats are small - about 12 people - but enable you to get a close up view of the end of the glacier.
Or you can fly over by helicopter!

Visited in May 2023
Located within the Aoraki National Park, we self-drove from Lake Tekapo for approximately 1 hour, the road to Tasman Glacier hike is well sign-posted once in Mt Cook Village. Free parking and entry, toilet facilities and a rest hut are located in the parking area.
Despite the hike being much shorter (approx. 30min return trip) compared to Hooker Valley Trail, there are more inclined.
Another great lookout at the end of the Tasman Glacier and how much it has receded since several years ago.
Due to its short hike, it is do-able for all ages. Ensure proper shoes are worn and bring water.

Очень красивый ледник и дорога к нему. Подъем несильно сложный. Обязательно стоит приехать и посмотреть на него. В озере можно увидеть айсберги. Не Glacial lagoon в Исландии, но тоже живописненько.

The views from the lookout at the top of the trail are incredible - 360 degree views of amazing scenery stretching from the glacier in one direction to Lake Pukaki in the opposite. On the way up you also see the Blue Lakes, which are actually green!
The trail up to the lake is fairly short but the ascent is rapid and the most of the path is steps. The info boards on the way up are very informative and give an excuse to have a rest and catch your breath.
The other to note is that the car park is quite small for the amount of visitors that come to walk this area.

My experience at Tasman Glacier was absolutely awe-inspiring. The sheer magnitude and beauty of the glacier left me speechless. The guided tour was informative, providing fascinating insights into the glacier's formation and history. The striking blue hues of the ice were truly mesmerizing, and the pristine alpine scenery was a sight to behold. The opportunity to witness the glacier up close and even touch the ancient ice was an unforgettable experience. The knowledgeable guides were passionate about the environment and conservation, which added a meaningful aspect to the tour. Despite being a popular tourist destination, the area felt pristine and untouched, allowing me to connect with nature in a profound way. Overall, Tasman Glacier left an indelible mark on my soul, and I highly recommend it to anyone seeking a breathtaking adventure in New Zealand's stunning natural landscape.

We came, we saw, we frolicked on the glacier itself. Unforgettable experience. Helicopter ride there and back was terrific as well.

Yesterday we climbed the steps for a great view of Mt Tasman, Tasman Glacier and Lake. Today we went back for the walk to the jetty and river from the same starting point. A longer but flatter walk more suitable to mobility impaired people, although still some rises and gravel to navigate.
To the left of the jetty a short track went up a steep hill (more like goat track) but the view was fabulous and better than yesterday. But for that climb (where the view is awesome) the rest of the walk had scenery which was nice but not spectacular.

One of the best things I have ever done! Such an incredible sight tinged with a terrible sense of doom as you learn that the glacier is melting at 30cm a day :( If you know anyone who dosent Venice in climate change, pay for them to come on this tour. The proof is right in front of your eyes.

I saw there’s another path to walk up to the mountain to view the glacier and the blue lake instead as I don’t see they have another type of boat.
