Totally underwhelming. We saw more animals on our drive from the North Island. It’s a very expensive place to go for a walk. It was extremely sad to see the Kia walking back and forth in their small enclosure. They are very intelligent birds and need space and stimulation, I left feeling depressed.
Nothing exciting to see here, I’m sorry to say.

Thank you for taking the time to write a review following your visit to the Park, we are disappointed you found the park to be underwhelming and that there wasn't anything exciting to see. Orana is set on 80 hectares and is home to over 1000 animals representing 90 different species. The balance we aim to achieve in an open range setting is displaying animals in spacious exhibits whilst also not having visitors peer at specks in the distance. Over the years, we have worked hard to develop a range of interesting scheduled daily animal feed presentations enabling visitors to view our animals up close and to interact with the keepers during their public talks. At the moment we have 12 presentation each including giving visitors the opportunity to hand feed our majestic giraffe.
Please be assured our precious kea are well cared for and are provided with a range of natural and made made enrichment throughout the day including rotten logs, stone piles, puzzle feeders and more. We do have one kea that does move back and forth along one of the board walks, he does this to decompress, if he has been stressed or overstimulated himself. Our team are aware of this behavior and ensure he always has access to the off display area of the habitat if needed. We do appreciate your concern, but please be rest assured our team care greatly for all of the animals we are privileged to hold.

Great place,. very exciting.. i felt bad for the Gorillas.. as classes of kids go in and no one to tell them to get off the bit that says do no stand and they tap the window and the gorillas got annoyed. maybe have watcher there when kids go in ?? there were cameras but that doesnt do much. was horible seeing them running to the window trying to break it. hoping one day you can get a female gorilla in. is great to see there are free bbqs, just take your food in and cook and bbq.. there is a cafe there as well. the staff were lovely, with a lovely lady driving round in the bus cart thing. very informative. is a lot of walking.. you can hire out prams for kids.. and wheelchairs.. there is a first aid place .. cafe and shop.

Thank you so much for taking the time to write a review following your visit. We are pleased you enjoyed your time at the Park. It saddens us to hear visitors were upsetting our amazing gorilla boys, I will pass this on to our visitor services team to keep an eye on. Thank you again for your feedback it is greatly appreciated.

Orana Park gas been around for ages and has a good collection of animals - sadly though, the place looks very tired in parts and could do with some significant investment to spruce the place up.
The cafe is hopelessly inefficient - there was an enormous queue for a largely deep fried menu and some reasonable cabinet food.
Come prepared for a lot of walking - in spite of its tired setting, the park has some incredible animals.

Thank you for taking the time to provide your feedback following your visit to Orana. Orana Wildlife Park is a registered charitable trust and not-for-profit organization. We heavily rely on gate takings to operate and in fact, over 60% of our income is derived from gate sales, so we thank you for visiting. All capital projects must be separately fundraised for. Your support goes directly back into the Park and allows us to continue our conservation work, such as breeding kākāriki karaka for release to the wild.

This place is top of the list for an Awesome family day out. The lion encounter is amazing and super up close. Talking about ½ a metre. The Keepers are so helpful and informative too. The afternoon was packed with many other animal encoumters. Hand feeding the giraffes was great!
I HIGHLY RECOMMEND 😁

Great park nice to see such a variety of animals all with plenty of room to live a natural life
BUT AVOID THE SHUTTLE RIDE there was a OLD Scottish guy driving who announced at the start of the journey that he wouldn’t be speaking through the PA system as the animals would do all the talking for them selves yay we thought .But that old Scottish driver didn’t shut up for 10seconds the volume was at ear drum piercing level then the git even started to sing a random song my god avoid the shuttle unless you want to get deafened by random stories and no real animal facts and a bloody song this isn’t the first time this has happened to me on the shuttle ride around the park
Think they are dottery old volunteers.

Friendly staff and we felt it was good value for money for a family of 4.
We spent 3 hours but could have stayed longer if we didn't have to drive 6 hours home!
Enjoyed the giraffe feeding and the gorillas the best. Some of the exhibits could be refreshed but overall we didn't mind the slightly rustic feel of it. I wish there was more funding to make some of the exhibits feel a little less dated, with up to date information and graphics. The kiwi house especially could do with some love (and macrons on the Māori words).

Thank you so much for taking the time to write a review. We are pleased to hear you enjoyed your visit to the Park. We are actually in the early stages of building a new native centre including a new nocturnal house. Our current house was the first in the South Island so is definitely due for an upgrade. We are in consultation with Ngāi Tahu for all aspects of the new centre. As all of our major projects are fundraised for this will be a massive effort by the team as it is estimated that it will cost ~$3M. Our team are excited for this project and hope to break ground early next year. Thank you so much for visiting the Park, we hope to see you again.

Park is amazing, cafe is a huge disappointment. Overpriced, Incompetent staff, got the wrong order 3 times. Coffee was sour meaning the grind was wrong. Avoid this waste of money.

Was surprised at how derelict the park has become. There were a few shelters that require upkeep as well as a boarded up building. The only somewhat modern building is the Ape enclosure. Some of the animal viewing was decent however felt the price to what was on display doesn't match what you are expecting to pay for. We are locals of Canterbury so not from out of town. Overall was a below average experience. Orana park definitely requires financial investment.

The giraffes, hippos, bison etc were easy to see/ view, fun to get up close with giraffes at feeding also the small animals farm was good for small children, but 60 % of the animals were either in indoor house and couldn’t see them or sleeping in grass to far away for decent viewing. The park is unsuitable for small children, far to far to walk and train only runs every hour, quiet disappointed in accessibility

Is there fixed timing for the free shuttle that goes round the park? the shuttle goes clockwise or anti-clockwise? Is it faster to walk to each exhibit than wait for the shuttle?
OranaWildlifePark
新西兰基督城
Hi everyone, thank you for your comments. Our shuttle goes every hour on the half hour (10:30am, 11:30am...) during the week and every half hour (10:30am, 11am...) on the weekends. There is no additional cost for this and you are welcome to use it as often as you like throughout your visit. Please note that the shuttle does not coincide with animal feeding times. If you have any further questions, feel free to contact our friendly reception team on 03 359 7109. We look forward to seeing everyone at the Park soon!

if you could only visit one of the two attractions, would you choose to visit this or wildlife park or to the international artic centre?

It definitely depends on what you are after. The Antarctic centre is more of an experience with a 3D movie, trip in an all terrain vehicle, snow room and a museum and some penguins. Orana is a wildlife park where the attraction is the animals. Both are good but, for me it would depend on the weather. If the weather is bad then I'd go to the Antarctic centre as it's inside. If it's a lovely day then Orana.

How can I get to Orana from Christchurch? I dont have a car, and the shuttle recommended by Orana is expensive... is there another company providing that service?
nathan531
新西兰基督城
Thank you for the query. Unfortunately there is no public transport to Orana so shuttle companies and/or taxi are the way. The Orana shuttle (a separate company) provides a dedicated door-to-door service to Orana and other companies (such as Super Shuttle) or taxis (such as Gold Band) also provide transport.

Do you recommend a visit for people who can't walk very far?
nathan531
新西兰基督城
Yes, certainly. Regular animal feeds occur throughout the day which break up the walking distance. A shuttle tours people around the zoo (note it operates like a bus and doesn't wait at the animal exhibits but operates regularly throughout the visit). Alternatively the guiding team can assist.

Hi there, when visited as a child, we were able to drive our car through the lion enclosure. Does this still happen or do we need to ay $40 each to do it, which is very expensive for a family with teenagers, on top of $30 each park entry?
nathan531
新西兰基督城
Hi Kathryn - thanks for the interest in Orana Wildlife Park. The drive-through Lion Reserve closed in 1995 so we no longer permit cars in to the habitat. Visitors can view the public lion feed (2.30pm daily) from many vantage points around the habitat including our raised viewing platform (included in the cost of admission). Alternatively, for an additional cost of $40 per person, our awesome Lion Encounter takes visitors through the Lion Habitat (at 2.30pm) on board our modified vehicle for extremely close views of the cats. Best regards Orana Wildlife Park
