A very interesting place to visit. Both the forge and pumps were working. We were escorted by a guide who made the visit very interesting.

What an interesting and informative experience. My guide , Bill, took me around and explained not only how the Gasworks worked but the history of gas use in Dunedin.

Excellent example of why NZ's industrial heritage needs preserving. Not a topic to suit everyone but the tour was done by a terrific bunch of un paid volunteers. Well worth taking the time to see it.

We were the only visitors which was a shame as its only open for a few hours a week. The volunteer took us around and made sure we didn't miss anything and then left us to wander. Well worth $5. We will try to get back when they are running the machines.

My husband and I visited this little museum today and were given a tour round by Simon and Gavin. There are apparently just three volunteers for this museum and there were just the two of us at the time. They spent more than an hour explaining the science to us, whose knowledge of chemistry was 5th form (Year 11) science course.
They didn't pretend to know everything but were so patient with our no doubt dumb questions. And all for $5NZ.
The machines were so huge! And the amount of things that come from a tonne of coal was amazing.

Went on Sunday only intending to stay for 30 mins we spent 1.30 minutes there and loved it all, on the day we went they had all the machinery working and the smell of hot oil and grease is wonderful

This is an original old Gas brick complex with the original gas steam plants that are running, operated by volunteers right next to a Countdown supermarket. Great to hear how the town ran on gas produced from coal and pumped to the homes etc. They even have really old home gas ovens, a coffee maker, washing machines etc. All this for $5 a person. Only catch is there not opened very often which one expects when all the staff are volunteers.

A nice little museum that covers the 19th century factory that made town gas from coal. They have a lot of the machinery and sometimes fire up the steam engine to show off the machinery. Unfortunately, they did not have it running the day we visited.

A fascinating place to visit to see a piece of NZ and Dunedin history. Beautifully preserved and working machinery. Informative,enthusiastic and friendly staff. Only $5 per adult. Well worth a visit if you are in Dunedin on a Sunday afternoon.

Parked in the Countdown car park, but probably better to park at the other side on the road. $5 for each adult and free for under 12's. For the younger ones there is a organ, a pulley and they can sound the horn. It was not a long visit, but for $10 for the family it was well worth the visit. So glad we checked out on this rainy day.
