Our guide entertained us from start to finish and gave us lots of information about the flora and fauna. We were able to see lots of birds and baby seals playing. A very nice experience.
I would do the tour again anytime and recommend it to others.

Booked this excursion to admire the wildlife around Dunedin. We were picked up at the hotel and went out with a group of 12. Our guide knew a lot and did this in a fun way. Bird watching through the bingo card, seeing seals, the cruise to see the Albatross and the visit to the penguin center were all great. We experienced it as a great day and can recommend this excursion to anyone staying in Dunedin.

We saw very few animals in 6 hours. It is true that the penguins, for example, are protected but the pictures on their website are misleading, you can't get to the beach and you can't see anything at all without binoculars. We felt like we were on a sponsored tour for "wildlife" and would not recommend the tour.

My husband and I booked the standard peninsula encounter. Our guide, Chris, was extremely knowledgeable about the area’s wildlife, particularly albatrosses as he managed the Royal Albatross Center for many years and grew up on the peninsula. He was kind and patient with all of our questions and helped our group understand the steps we needed to take to view the local wildlife respectfully. It was a great outing and we would definitely send our friends!

Very impressed with these guys from start to finish. On time pick-up, great briefing & commentary as we roamed around the Otago Peninsular for a whole day. They showed us loads of birdlife, fur seals, sealions, blue penguins and the now-threatened yellow-eyed penguins in their small sanctuary. Then dropped us back at our hotel. Very happy, and would highly recommend this outfit.

We made a reservation at Elm Wildlife tours well in advance. We were picked up at our campground in a minivan. Our group was only small and was accompanied by a driver and a guide. We went to the Albatross center and saw several albatros in flight and on their nests. We also saw baby albatrosses. After that we went to a beach to see Yellow Eyed Penguins. We were there at the exact time when they came out of the water. It was perfect ! We watched them from an observation hut. After that we drove to another place nearby where we could see a colony of seals who also had baby seals. We payed extra to get a ride by a jeep up a steep hill from the beach with the penguins back to the minivan. I can recommend that because the walk up the hill is very exhausting. The guide was wonderfull : he spoke in a loud voice and had very interesting information.

We werden stipt op tijd opgehaald bij ons hotel door onze gids Will. Hier startte onze tour!
Will beschikt over alles kennis en informatie van de omgeving en het wildlife. Met gevatte grapjes onderweg is het een enorm leuke dag geworden. Hij heeft enorm zijn best gedaan om het wildlife te spotten en met succes:)!

Not quite sure how this gets rave reviews. Unless your are an avid bird voucher, this is a very expensive 7 hour excursion. Money and time can be invested better.
We travel many places with out kids, hiking several kilometers is NOT and issue for us. However, the content of this tour is NOT for children. Unless your children are avis bird watchers.
The tour starts with a drive to a public beach and you may see a sea lion or two. Again you can access the beach on your own so no real value add. On the way to this beach you pass a body of water where you can view via binoculars some local birds.
Not very captivating unless you are an avid bird watcher.
Then you visit the albatross center, again you can visit this yourself. No value add.
You then go to a penguin rehab center for a few minutes where you have to be dead silent and you see one or two penguins.
Finally you are taken to a private nature reserve and again via binoculars hope to see penguins coming out of water. We barely saw two from such a long distance.
Kids simply don't have anything to do on this tour. Even adults would find it too long for any benefit especially when considering the cost.
We did see a few seals at the nature reserve which was very nice. But again, for 7 hours with two kids and what was given, we would certainly NOT recommend it.
Other than the private nature reserve, everything can be seen on your own.

Wir waren 8 Stunden unterwegs und sahen einige Vögel vom Bus aus, einen Gelbaugenpinguin in der Krankenstation, Albatrosse in 2 km Entfernung vom Schiff aus, ( es hätten, da man nichts erkennen konnte, auch Tauben sein können) 2 Rock Seals in weiter Entfernung vom Boot und Nistkästen von Pinguinen.
Die erwarteten Tierbegegnungen beschränkten sich auf einen Sea Lion am Strand, den man tatsächlich sehen konnte und nicht nur erahnen. Klar kann es keine Garantien geben, wenn aber von vornherein klar ist, dass die Entfernung zwischen Mensch und Tier so riesig sein wird dass nichts zu beobachten ist dann sind 180 Dollar völlig überzogen.
Möglichkeiten schaffen, tatsächlich in näheren Kontakt zu den Tieren zu kommen.

We took this tour several years ago and in spite of really bad weather we thoroughly enjoyed it. This time we understood that the company had changed hands, but the tour was better than ever. The tour had been lengthened with new areas added. Our guide for the land portion of the tour was excellent. He was not only congenial but he was extremely well-prepared. We saw seals, sea lions, porpoises, penguins and all manner of sea and land birds.
Don’t come to Dunedin without taking this tour!

hi, we are planning to visit Dunedin in 3rd week of march. we are interested in your trip as we and our 3 year old daughter really loves penguins and seals.
but I have a back problem due to which I m not able to walk uphill or for more than 15-20 mins at a stretch..
will the encounter lite tour suit us considering my back and our young daughter?

Hello Mahima.
The Lite tour will remove most of the walking up and down the hills, however, walking is still required to get from the vehicle to the animals some of which is down a gradually sloping track to the beach and a series of stairs at the seals and penguins. The stairs can be a challenge for some people and without knowing your capabilities I would hate to give a definitive answer.

Yes Amanda, we pick up and drop from your hotel, backpacker or B&B in the central Dunedin area. We do not pickup from Air B&B or private residence.

Hello Carole.
From April onward through until next spring we do not include the boat trip as an option because our schedule does not meet theirs.
All of our tours use buses to transport people to the various locations then walking up and down the hills is required to see the animals.
On our tour you will see penguins, fur seals, sea-lions and usually we see albatross. At the albatross center some people do the extra albatross tour as an add on. It doesn't increase the length of the tour it just means that you would look at the albatross from the observatory at the albatross center. There is an added cost for that.
