I just passed this church while I was walking around Invercargill. I could not get inside since it was closed but worthwhile having a look from the outside.

More on the outside

As you drive down the main street this church sure looks the part, and the main attraction is its looks from the outside. The inside has been modernised and for me lost that old world look that these grand old churches would radiate. Modern pews now dominate the space inside, but look up and you can see some of the wood work holding the high roof in place. Don't worry if it is closed the day you go past, the best part id the outside.

Schöne Kirche

Wir haben uns diese reizende Kirche am Ende einer kleinen Invercargill-Rundfahrt angeschaut.
Hier ein kleiner Tipp für diese Rundfahrt:
Wenn man von Norden her über den SH6 kommt links in die Gala Street abbiegen. Nach ein paar hundert Metern liegt links das Southland Museum, vor dem man bequem parken kann. Uns hat leider zur Besichtigung die Zeit gefehlt und wir sind nur in den Souvenirshop gelangt. Vor dem Museum gibt es auch einige Relikte.
Rechts neben dem Museum ist der Eingang in den Queens Park.
Dann die Gala Street weiterfahren bis zum Queens Drive hier rechts abbiegen und gleich am Rand halten. Rechts gegenüber liegt der Water Tower. Nach ca. einem halben Kilometer rechts auf den SH1 (Woodlands-Invercargill Highway) abbiegen.
Zweite Straße links (Yttah Street). An dieser Kreuzung liegt die First Presbyterian Church. Haltemöglichkeit an der Tankstelle. Nach ein paar hundert Metern rechts in die Tyne Street. Nach einem halben Kilometer liegt die St.Mary´s Basilica auf der linken Seite.
Nächste Straße rechts (Nith street). Wieder zurück zum SH1. Dann nach links bis zum Kreisverkehr. Geradeaus weiter und am nächsten Kreisverkehr rechts (Leven Street).
Nach ein paar Metern liegt das sehenswerte Victoria Railway Hotel auf der rechten Seite.
Nach wieder ca. einem halben Kilometer rechts in die Gala Street. Bis zur Dee Street vorfahren und rechts abbiegen. Nach 100 Metern liegt oben erwähnte Kirche auf der rechten Seite. Zum Angucken einfach an der nächsten Straße kehren und wieder ein paar Meter zurück. Man kann rechts daneben parken.
Wenn man die Dee Street südwärts fährt kommt man direkt am Buren-Denkmal (Uhrenturm) vorbei und gelangt über den SH1 direkt nach Bluff.

Beautiful building in heart of Invercargill

Invercargill has some gorgeous architecture and the St Pauls Church is one of these beautiful buildings. Parking outside so that you can get out and have a look. Walking distance to city centre so you can have a look around as well.

Once again, closed and locked but the outside is magnificent, picture windows stunning!

Very hard to see churches when they lock them during the day! But this church is different, a concrete outside, looking like stone, with high picture windows, mostly obscured from the outside. Very elegant, very prim and proper and a proud stature. The bell tower is pretty and you can see some windows from the south side.

Wonderful community faith forums are held here

A beautiful church and church hall at the side.

I have attended several inter faith forums here and stayed for the lunch afterwards and have enjoyed all the varied topics and presentations and friendly lunches.
Unfortunately attendance is dependent on seeing the newspaper advertisement so I have missed out on several. An e-mail data base of those attending or a telephone tree for those who wish to be contacted to register their interest would be a fine asset.

A reminder of Scottish heritage

For what was once a bustling large city, Invercargill has very few large religious edifices like St. Paul's. It can be found on Dee Street. Notable featutres are the elegant wooden panelling, traditional timber pews and of course its majestic organ. It also serves as a memorial to all those who served their country during wartime. Highly recommended for a time of quiet reflection.

Stately Elegant

Situated quietly on Dee Street, just over the street from the 'Fastest Indian' collection, St Pauls Church invites you to a place of quiet reflection. Lovely wooden panelling, wooden pews and a wonderful organ. Some stained glass windows reflect the chasing light and shadows of the outside sky - and offers a peaceful ambience from the noise and bustle of passing vehicles.
